Big Ten 2015-2016

Re: Big Ten 2015-2016

Finished in 8th place one year too.
The fact that they didn't seek to leave HE then only proves that it wasn't the tough competition that eventually led to them leaving. As someone else said it's more about the money...which is nothing unusual in college sports these days. And to the extent it is not about the money, it's about geography and reestablishing old rivalries, from both the old WCHA and the CCHA.

Is the infamous "mullet man" the dude with glasses and a mullet consisting of dark curly locks who every Final Five would get up for DanceMania and do this sad little "twirl" with both index fingers?

If so that's fricken hilarious, because he always sat about 3 rows directly in front of us and I always referred to him as "mullet man" myself....

I miss him :(

Spiewak just name on his jersey. Don't know who he was other than UND fan that came to frozen five every year.

He sat about 3 rows in front of us as well and always got up and danced. Those were some fun games and made the rivalries even better.

The good news for them is by joining the BIG they can finish no worse than 7th. I think they thought they would be more dominate when they joined the league.

From everything I have read they never really wanted to be in Hockey East. Their first choice was the B1G, but the conference wouldn't yield on it's requirement that they join for all sports. Then they looked at the NCHC, but that conference had issues with it's exclusive TV deal with NBC. Sounds like Hockey East was considred the best option left for them.

Like others have said, thd main drivers appear to be money, geography, and historical rivalries. Saying they are bolting because of competition the same season they finished 3rd is a little ridiculous. And considering long-term the prospects of the B1G being every bit as difficult a conference with MN, MI, and WI in the fold, makes that idea sound foolish as well.

There are better options - options that we'd all like more - but I don't ever see it happening.

Unless of course we can get Notre Dame for lacrosse also (where they are nationally ranked) and drag Denver along and then get Denver for hockey too.

I don't see NoDak ever happening.

Edit: NM... ND in ACC for lacrosse.

I don't think NoDak will ever happen either.

Miami-Ohio maybe.

Not to prolong the argument we just had in the other thread, but Miami is the best academic school in the MAC and is an original public Ivy.

Remains to be seen...

I couldn't even find them in the top 200 research institutions. Which doesn't mean they aren't qualified. Just doesn't seem to fit immediately. I guess it kind of reminds me of UConn. Quality undergraduate program, limited graduate program. They do have the added benefit of being a regional team that has had success. So maybe it will be them. That is the rumor.

Re: Big Ten 2015-2016

Why would ND join in football and have to share their revenue with Michigan. That would be the day ND helps michigan lol. And as for lacrosse why would ND leave the ACC to go play in the big ten. ACC lacrosse is great. Duke UNC ND Syracuse etc. BIG has Hopkins OSU Maryland. Hopkins hasnt been as good in the past few years. ND would be wise to stay were they are at. As for ASU i heard that the NCHC is looking to add them i was reading in an article. I believe two other conference were as well.

Re: Big Ten 2015-2016

Michigan makes more money than Notre Dame

And if that is true which it could be why would ND give them even more when they win. I cant wait until ND and Michigan renew their football rivalry. I believe they are talking about it. I know ND just beat Michigan in the ncaa basketball tournament. ND should play michigan in every sport just my opinion

Re: Big Ten 2015-2016

Looks like it was #2 Notre dame and #3 Michigan. I was wrong there according to Forbes evaluations. I'm trying to find some other sources that back that up

Re: Big Ten 2015-2016

Well then my statement rings true why would ND want to help michigan just saying. Huge rivals.

Universities don't give a **** about rivalries anymore. It's all about the mighty dollar. The second Notre Dame thinks it can make more money by joining, it will jump to the big ten faster than you can say AAU.

Will never happen. They have said it a million times they will not give up that NBC contract to join a conference. They make so much money from NBC its crazy. If they were gonna join they wouldnt have put all their sports besides football into the ACC

Re: Big Ten 2015-2016

Almost nothing. Most schools have two revenue sports. Football and a distant second is basketball. For the big ten, after football the big ten network brings in the most money. Even Minnesota is in the top 20 or 25 athletic departments in revenue. Minnesota

The cash cow here is sharing BTN money, not bowl games. Bowl games are measured in millions where BTN is measured in tens of millions.

NBC's contract with Notre Dame is worth about $15 million a year. The BTN's is worth north of $30 million per school.

Re: Big Ten 2015-2016

How much of that money does Michigan get from other programs in the conference, gotta remember when these teams go to bowl games and such they split the money with the whole conference. ND being independent doesnt get money from other schools. So that number next to ND is the money ND has raised.

Michigan paid more into that bowl game pot than they got out last year. Purdue paid in nothing and got a piece. So it's a more constant number that Big Ten schools get, rather than the wild swings that ND gets between years where they go to big bowl games or fleabag ones (or none at all).
