Best of women’s hockey 2021

The year in review articles will be coming out soon and I was curious what the uscho posters thought was the best of 2021 in women’s hockey. Do you have a favorite memory? Think a game or play was THE best? What off ice development was most significant to you?

here’s just a few of mine,
1- a sentimental one: late Jan I watched a bit of the NW bubble. Figured out how to cast it on my tv and had it on in the background while playing action figures with my 4 year old. Toronto vs Minn on a Saturday night and Mikyla Grant-Mentis was emerging as an NW star. Felt like the old days of watching HNIC (sort of), but it was women’s hockey.

2- off ice:
the espn+ deal for the PHF. Has exponentially increased the accessibility of hockey for me. Twitch was ok; ESPN+ is a million times better. I’ve been watching games from this season during the Christmas break as it’s all archived. Mostly watch the Six, going to watch the Pride games too as their roster is awesome.

3- the obvious: the return of MPP. She is back with a vengeance, but that gets enough attention (within women’s hockey).

4- the underrated: if I could go back in time and rewatch a game I’d like to watch the 3 2 OT win that NU had over UMD in the frozen four. Any foreshadowing there for rest of 2022? They looked done after that first period, thought it was gonna be another “welcome
to the wcha” game, but they found a way. Fantastic.

I’ll stop there, but could go on. The women’s game is so fun to follow despite the nonsense. Would love to hear your year in review
takes.

Merry Christmas Lindsay. Your posts are ultimately the best, full of knowledge and passion for the game. So awesome.

Merry Christmas to you too slap shot, and thank you for the kind words! I am grateful for every fan who posts here. Best place online to be a women’s hockey fan. :-)

The collegiate year was not cancelled last year was easily the best story in my mind. The worst thing was RMU folding. That's a blow to the city, coaches, players and the women's game. I wonder if Michaela Boyle will show up anywhere for the spring? OSU took three RMU players O think.

Keep posting away Lindsay, I appreciate them.

Elite Prospects shows her as transferring to BC.

The highlight of my 2021 was just being able to go to the games again. When something is such a big part of your life and it gets taken away, it leaves a hole there. I was so stoked to be in the OSU Ice Rink on September 24th for the home-opening series vs WCHA newcomer St. Thomas. Never again will I take for granted the opportunity to be at the games in person to support my girls!

I agree being able to go to the games again was the highlight of 2021, for the players, coaches and the fans.

The best thing is having all teams back playing this year at all levels of college hockey and with full schedules. The worst thing was losing collegehockeystats. It was the best way of following all college scores, etc. Is there anything similar yet?

The continued growth our game is also worth mentioning as a highlight. More TV coverage and better streaming at all levels elevates the quality of coverage and access/exposure to our sport. One of my pet peeves has always been some the hiring decisions that some colleges make when searching for a new coach. The hiring of more women who have played the college game and want to make a career of coaching would be great to see, or even men who have clearly demonstrated a commitment to our game, like Paul formerly of RMU for example. I think we all would love to see him back in the college game ASAP. I think I've expressed my opinion enough in the past that you all know how I feel when schools have made hiring decisions that I feel have been highly questionable. My hope as we head into the New Year is that school administrators will smarten up and treat our sport much more equitably and professionally so we won't t see those types of hires anymore. I believe there are plenty of very viable people in the women's college hockey community to properly support and develop our game.

Happy New Year everyone!

P.S. I still hate the poor functionality of this website!

Happy New Year to the other 16 fans on the Women's Site.

I would hope there are some lurkers(not THE Lurker), who bring that total higher. If you lurkers out there have problems getting registered, contact the USCHO support staff. They helped me to get going, after my old ID had timed out.
