Best college hockey game you've ever seen

Re: Best college hockey game you've ever seen

2007 Final Five Championship - Minnesota defeats UND 3-2 in OT on one of the most ridiculous goals you will ever see by Blake Wheeler

I wish I could have been in the building for the 2002 Frozen Four in St Paul, but the the atmosphere at the X for the 2007 Final Five was ridic! It was buzzing well before the puck dropped and it was crazy throughout!

Re: Best college hockey game you've ever seen

I' m new to the forum so I'm sure this has been done before. But I don't currently see anything like it. So here goes. 1991 championship game between Northern Michigan and BU. This game had everything. BU lead 3-0 after the 1st. By the end of the 2nd. NMU was up 5-3. They upped it to 6-3 early in the 3rd. But BU came roaring back, outscoring NMU 4-2 in the 3rd, with the tying goal coming in the last minute. Then, the teams went 3 overtimes with BU hitting a double pipe before NMU finally put away. It was terrific!

I was at that game and I remember NMU got a standing ovation from the Gopher faithful after winning the 1991 title. This game would be up there for me as well.

BC vs. UNH 2008 HE semi-final. BC was down 4-1 and tied it up. Scored in the first OT, but the goal was disallowed because Kevin Regan's helmet came off 50 feet from his own net and then finally won it in the 2nd OT.

Re: Best college hockey game you've ever seen

Not sure if this is the "best" game I was ever at, but it's the most memorable, the most epic, the most taxing.

Most in attendance had their Frozen Four tickets for Milwaukee already bought and we had been the best team all season. It couldn't end in the regionals could it? To Cornell? Now nothing against Cornell as they were our toughest opponent in the NCAA's that year and they played a whale of a game that day, but the train wasn't supposed to come off the tracks in the regional.

What a gut wrenching marathon of a game where as the periods passed without a goal, it became clear that one slip by either team was going to be the difference. Nerves on end for about 4.5 straight hours.

I was also at the FF a couple of weeks later, but this was the game of games for me.

Matt Greene was robbed! :D

1a: 1988 NCAA semifinal - SLU vs. Minnesota

1b: 2000 NCAA quarterfinal - SLU vs. BU

I was also at the 2001 national championship game (BC/UND), which was right up there, even though it didn't turn out the way I had hoped.

I've been to several other incredible RS and playoff games over the years. Probably the most memorable moment not involving my favorite team - also not turning out the way I had hoped - was the "Willie Mitchell Game" (1999 ECAC semifinal between Clarkson and Princeton).

Re: Best college hockey game you've ever seen

1989 Championship game.

I was only five, but I remember every minute of it clearly. Probably because it completely broke my heart. Regardless, that was an awesome game.

That was another dandy. I can still hear Skarda's shot ringing off that post and soon after that, it was over. So been on both sides. Winning is more fun.

Re: Best college hockey game you've ever seen

2003, NMU at Tech...Tech down 6-3 with 2:30 to play, tied it and won 7-6 in overtime. I have never seen a game singlehandedly found a student section, but there it is.

2006 F5, Minnesota vs. St. Cloud...that game was bonkers.

That's my vote for most entertaining game I've ever been to. Absolutely nuts.

But no hockey memory will replace that 2002 championship game. A moment I had literally been waiting my whole life for.

1. 1999 ECAC semifinal - Clarkson vs. Princeton - the "Willie Mitchell Game": I was only 6, but I remember this game clearly. Clarkson took a 3-0 lead 5:24 into the game and was ahead 4-0 after the first period. The shots in the first were 27-6 Clarkson. Princeton scored 3 goals in the second period to cut the lead to 4-3. Clarkson scored 7:55 into the third to make it 5-3, but Princeton scored at 15:43 and 19:17 to tie the game at 5. With time winding down and Clarkson wondering how they'd blown at 4 goal lead, Willie Mitchell took a slap shot from center ice that found the back of the net with 3 seconds left to Clarkson a 6-5 win. It was a crazy, crazy game, and it's the best and most memorable game I've ever seen. Here's the goal:

2. 2001 National Championship - BC vs. North Dakota - This was my first frozen four and my brother (who was a BC student at the time) and I had tickets right behind the goal where Krys Kolanos scored the game-winner.

Re: Best college hockey game you've ever seen

Best non-tourney game I've seen was in January 2001 (might have been 2000) between UND and UW in Madison. Teams were tied for first in the conference, I believe, and both had national title hopes. The Kohl Center was jammed, and the atmosphere was electric. UND came from behind to tie, then Reinprecht wins a faceoff in OT to Goehring's left, the puck gets to Hukalo in the middle of the slot, and he buries it. Wrong team won, but fabulous, exciting hockey.

Identical results the next night, same scorer from the same spot on the ice, to make it even more unusual.

Seeing all those Badger fans pee their pants was kind of cool too.

December 4, 1968 RPI over Cornell with Ken Dryden 4-3 in overtime on a goal by Doug Hearns. The so-called "game that saved RPI hcokey" since the RPI admins were considering downgrading the program because we weren't competitive. (see 1965-6)

November 13th, 2010. Two pieces of video evidence (never mind the fake goal horn):

Re: Best college hockey game you've ever seen

For met the best overall regular season game was this one: http://collegehockeystats.net/0809/boxes/mmndwmu1.o18

It was a back and forth game where UMD scored 6 goals for the first time over a year and a half. UMD scored 4x4 near the end of the game, but WMU came back and scored a game tying EA goal. UMD won it in overtime. Some guys named Jack Connolly (scored his first goal) and Mike Connolly showed how they might just live up to the hype and change UMD hockey forever.

I will never forget the "Miracle at Mariucci": http://collegehockeystats.net/0809/boxes/mmndprn1.m27

Scored two goals in 39 seconds left to tie the game. The crowd went insane when UMD scored with .8 seconds left in the game. It sounded like a Justin Beiber concert ;)

And of course last years' national championship game. Such relief when we scored on Hunwick! Once we did that I knew we could win the game. I was shockingly calm for overtime as we had played in so many before. I'll never forget the sounds before and after the GWG. Disbelief and tears of joy followed. A moment you never thought was going to happen to my favorite had occurred before my very eyes.

Re: Best college hockey game you've ever seen

Well, the 2009 championship was great, but the best pure hockey game was the regional final, in which BU and UNH played one of the best hockey games I've ever seen. UNH was fired up, Millan was standing on his head.

As a UNH fan hate to admit to it, but that was a great game and would be up there for me, both teams played great and it a fun game to watch, Think it was the best game I have seen UNH play, and BU was at their best to, would be between that and the 2004 HE finals between Maine and UMass in 3OT, Jimmy Howard and Gabe Winer were incredible in that game, maybe the best goal duel I have seen in person

Re: Best college hockey game you've ever seen

As previously mentioned, SLU vs BU in 2000 in Albany. Those SLU rally towels ended up being makeshift stress balls and sweat towels.
