Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Maybe if I had adopted this strategy earlier in the season, I would not be mired in 14th place, just ahead of blazer.

"I will be pulling for RIT but would not be surprised by a Falcon sweep.."

Well I'm moving up in the AHC Pick'em Standings as I picked this series right, wish I could say my Tigers were moving up in the standings..

Nice sweep Falcons, maybe we'll meet at the Jar one last time for a three game playoff series... :)

Good luck the rest of the way.

Falcons really needed the sweep this weekend. Freshman Jonathan Desbiens with four goals on the weekend was key; 3 assists each by French, Donners, and Orr was good to see, as were 2 goals by Schmidt and 2 assists by Jago. Hope that the Falcons can build on this weekend the rest of the way. No idea who will be hosting the first round at this point, but I am hoping for the JAR.

Impressive turnout at Polisseni tonight; 3400+? Those are numbers worthy of HEA or ECAC.

And, I am tanking in the AHC Pick 'Em. :-(

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Posted some of my thoughts about the rest of the season in the new Atlantic Hockey thread. This sweep was HUUGEE in terms of momentum going forward. Couldn't have come at a better time. Very excited for this upcoming home series against Air Force, as we arguably played our best game of the season against them earlier this year. My prediction is a couple of splits against AF and RMU, and then hopefully at least 3 points against SHU and HC. Should be interesting to see where that puts us in the standings, as RMU and Army both have series against Niagara coming up. Hoping for a first round bye though!

I would be happy to have home ice in the first round again, given how the first part of this season played out.

Will be at the Air Force game on Friday night; typically there are more Air Force fans than Bentley fans at the JAR, but maybe we can turn that around this weekend?

The dark side of me hope the Tigers drop enough to come visit the JAR in the post season so we an take over the east stands while I'd rather they play at home in front of a bigger fan base. How goes the new stadium build?

Good question! I will check today and bump up our other thread. It seems like nothing much is going on during the ground prep phase of these building projects, then suddenly the structure goes up really fast, which has not happened yet.

There are going to be really good giveaways on Friday night, so expect a decent sized crowd. A good showing from the (Bentley) Falcon faithful should be very helpful for the boys, gotta show some support for their good play as of late.

Whatever it takes! Free greasy pizza?!?!?

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Pretty abysmal weekend. Second half momentum pretty much entirely wiped out. To be honest, we didn't really match up all that badly with them. We played them even for 4 periods, they beat us BADLY in two (second period Friday, third period Saturday). Have to play 60 minutes of hockey each night, and we played about 50 in both games this weekend. Those other 20, they put up 7 goals. That's pretty much what it boils down to. There were plenty of offensive opportunities, maybe even more than we had against RIT. Difference being, we just couldn't finish like we did in Rochester. Breakaways, odd-man rushes, and just simple loose rebounds just weren't finding the back of the net. Granted, I'll give a lot of credit to Starrett on that front, who played outstanding all weekend. But the amount of times where I turned around and banged the wall after an easy missed opportunity was too many to count.

There are some good things to come out of this weekend, however. I really don't think we played all that poorly outside of those 10 minutes each night, on both sides of the puck. The offense was there, (I think we generated 25+ shots each game), and we blocked a decent amount of shots too. Solovyev and Buchanan are back from injury, although Soder can't make up his mind on the D-pairings. The freshmen are running wild, and the more time they get on the ice the better they get. We're down right now, but not out. If this team can finish strong against RMU, SHU and HC, a first round bye is not out of reach. Anything can happen in the playoffs, especially if these guys can just put away the pucks that SHOULD go in. Just gotta stay optimistic.

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

No matter on where any team finishes this season, it is bound to be a slugfest all the way. Competition is surely better through all teams, specialty teams and a hot goaltender peaking at the right moment will be the deciding factor. I see an upset this season in the works, just too many good quality teams anyone of which has a legitimate chance. Good luck Bentley fans, it only gets better from here on out.

Yup, Starrette was good, but I really did not see many loose rebounds on Friday night. I really dislike dump and chase into the corners, especially on the PP. No loose rebounds in front because most of Falcon shots from the side, so easy for Starrette to deflect into the corners. Also, Bentley forwards need to spend more time in the dirty areas in front of the other team's goalie, to screen shots if nothing else, and maybe pick up the rebounds straight out. But, I cannot take anything away from Air Force, as they played solid on both D and O on Friday night.

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Awesome weekend against RMU. 3 points against that team and season series win is a pretty big confidence boost. The 3 points didn't really help us much in the standings, but it set us up for a big jump this weekend. Sitting with 23 points, we are 1 point behind RIT and Hurst and 3 behind Holy Cross. Those three teams are playing against Top-4 teams this weekend, whilst we play Sacred Heart. If those 3 get swept and we sweep, which could be a likely scenario based on the matchups, we would leapfrog into 5th place and into a bye. Then we would control our own destiny in the final weekend at home against Holy Cross. In that scenario, if we split or better with HC we maintain the 5th seed, yet it would be very difficult for us to get the 4th seed. We would need RMU to get swept by Niagara to get a home quarterfinals matchup and we would have to sweep HC. So, if we can sweep SHU this weekend and those top 4 teams can pull off sweeps, we would either be up against RMU or Army in their buildings for the quarterfinals.

I haven't really worked out what happens in any other scenario. But this is the most promising one and the one I hope happens :).

In other news, Aidan Pelino won AHA goalie of the week after an outstanding weekend against RMU and his first career shutout. Argue was scratched for both games, so should be interesting to see what happens there going forward. Everything else looked very good this weekend as well, except our PP was a little bit more lacking than it has been. The PK was outstanding, partial credit due to Pelino, but still a great feat holding RMU to 0/7 when they are operating at 7th in the nation. The only weak point I noticed was that the passing wasn't as on point as it has been, but if the boys can start putting the puck tape to tape, look out for a good next couple of weekends. Let's Go Falcons!!!

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Well, this weekend could've gone better, and it also could've gone worse. We played fantastic on Friday night, from top to bottom. Pelino picked up his second career shutout and is really establishing himself as one of the better goaltenders in Atlantic Hockey. His current Sv. % is .935, which I believe is almost exactly the same as Argue had his freshman year. Speaking of Argue, he hasn't even dressed the last 4 games, which leads me to believe he's either hurt or has some sort of academic suspension. Anyways, what I've seen from Pelino is that he's more than deserving of the starting job regardless of Argue's status. Back to Friday's game... we played a full 60 minutes and never stopped playing hard. There were some times where it got pretty chippy, but we remained the bigger team that night.

Saturday night was a different story. There just seemed to be a lack of effort at some points, but credit to SHU as they played as the better team for the majority of the night. If it weren't for a very lucky short-handed empty netter by Sacred Heart (SHU defenseman threw it off the boards from behind his own net) that game would've gone to OT, and with the momentum we had at the end of that game, I think we would've won. Long story short, our defense needed to be better on both sides of the puck and some of our forwards need to put in a better effort on the back check.

Regardless, we only came away with 2 points this weekend, where 3 or 4 points would've put us in a much more favorable position heading into the final weekend. In order to get a first round bye, we need 3 points from Holy Cross, and one Mercyhurst loss to either Canisius (riding a 14 game unbeaten streak) or RIT. We could also get home ice and a first round bye if RMU manages to get swept by Niagara, but... anything can happen in Atlantic Hockey right? Looking forward to watching my final regular season series as a Bentley student at the JAR this weekend, expect a big showing from the Top Shelf and maybe even a few surprises ;)

Thanks for weekend summary, 527. You have been a solid poster on this thread all season, which has been especially appreciated for weekends when I have not been able to attend games. For me, I almost hope that we do not make the number 5 slot for a bye, as then we would have a week off to get rusty, and there would be no more games at the JAR. But, home ice in the MBPBEGAM round would be good to see at the JAR, maybe host AIC?

I think AIC is the LAST team I would want to play in the first round. I think they are a lot better than advertised and their performance greatly depends on their goaltender night to night. Their offense also has the potential to get VERY hot, I think they put up like 14 goals or something in a weekend against Niagara a couple weekends ago. Unfortunately, we have not had much success against any of the bottom three teams, splitting season series with all three of them. The only reason I'm rooting so hard for a first round bye is because my friends and I have a spring break trip planned already, and having to play two weekends would greatly cut into our final break as college students. Regardless, we're going wherever the team goes, and hopefully we can finally make that trip to Rochester!

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

With Mercyhurst losing last night, we officially control out destiny for a first round bye! A sweep and we’ve earn the 5 spot (potentially 4 if RMU blows it vs. Niagara)

Can’t believe that we’re playing Holy Cross for the first time all year the last weekend of the season. It’s put up or shut up time! Lets do it!

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Back in the day when 10 AHC teams played one another three times, the Falcons and Crusaders usually played home and home the last weekend of the regular season.

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Not the way we wanted the season to end. But if there's any positive, it's that we still get first round home ice. SHU is not going to be an easy opponent, especially with the way we've played them this year, but I have confidence that we'll be able to take down the Pioneers and advance to the second round. I posted a lengthy post about the depth of our team and about our upcoming bout with SHU in the new Atlantic Hockey tourney thread, talking about how we no longer rely on guys like French and Schmidt to win games. Looking forward to this Friday!

One drawback to a first-round bye is rust. As far as I know, the Falcons are healthy, so a first round series is probably a good thing to stay sharp for the second round, assuming that we can win two of three against the Pioneers.

Why not win 2 of 2 and call it a weekend?

Good luck falcons 😁
