Beloit?

GB Puck Fan

It's A Great Day For Hockey
Is that just a bad rumor I heard that Beloit may add hockey?

Take the Northland folks in the way Dubuque took the Finlandia kids?

Good news out of a bad situation. Sad to see any college close, setting aside the hockey element, but glad the program will live on to some degree at Beloit.

DIII Hockey News is reporting that Beloit to the WIAC isn't a done deal. I'm not sure if this implies that they might be NCHA-bound, or that they just haven't crossed the t's and dotted the i's with the WIAC yet.

So NCHA-bound then? They would be a great geographic fit, but the last thing the NCHA needs right now is an 11th team.

WIAC is screwed. That league minus Northland is way too competitive to get an at-large most years.

NCHA schedules will be very full if Beloit is member #11.

A Norbert/Adrian schedule with only 5 NC games leaves much less interconference play, which is bad for the sport and horrendous for the NPI. Just look at the women's game to see how NPI is working when we have less NC.

I have very little sympathy for the WIAC. With the way they went about breaking away from the NCHA, and then fully expected the rest of the NCHA teams to capitulate to them so they could be the ones who call the shots, they deserved the fecal matter dumped on them when said NCHA teams told them take a hike, we can keep the NCHA together. And still keep our auto bid.

I could be wrong, but it's hard to imagine that any school in the West would choose the WIAC over their current conference affiliation at this point in time, even if it gives them a slightly easier path to an AQ bid. Too many burned bridges among current NCHA schools and the one somewhat recent addition to the MIAC (CSS).

If Beloit joins them the NCHA would be one team away from having enough schools to cleave in two...
Isn't there a school in Ohio adding hockey in the next year or two?

As much as I hate this idea, there would be enough teams for a WI-only private school conference with the addition of Beloit.

I think there may be some sort of moratorium on new single sport conferences so they would need most of them to be part of one multisport and the others join as affiliates for the sport if the moratorium is true and I didn't hallucinate it...

You are correct.

Hiram College of Ohio announced last summer that it would add DIII hockey in 2025-2026 and has hired a coach to build the program (Jeffrey Curto tapped to build Hiram’s first men’s ice hockey program). Not seen anything about conference - an interesting one, given their northeast Ohio location between Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown puts them between the UCHC in the east and NCHA in the west, but with some really long trips in either. Gut feel is that going east makes more sense.

Curious about their program overall, it's a big step for a college of maybe 800 students.

As for Beloit, the WIAC makes geographic sense but the NCHA makes much better school profile sense. Small, private colleges, as opposed to state universities.

By my count, Beloit is closer to six NCHA schools than they are to the closest WIAC school, and about the same distance to two more NCHA schools. Trine and Adrian are both closer than Superior.

Most likely hoping to be a college of maybe 825-850 in the very near future
