Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

He says as much in his review (which isn't supposed to be published yet) when he calls it a popcorn flick. This is 2 hours of mindless fun. If you're going into this expecting Shakespeare you're going to be sorely disappointed.

There is a middle ground. It doesnt have to either Transformers or Saving Private Ryan.

The Shallows is also embargoed but early, unofficial reaction is not good.

I'm not even expecting the middle ground here. Two hours of fun and explosions in an air conditioned theater is all I ask. Plot, character development and logic are not required.

Yeah I thought that with Jurassic World...if I want to MST3K a movie I can do it from home ;)

Now if friends I trust like it...then I will change my tune but the previews look awful. Hell they look awful for a decade ago let alone now.

I get to see movies for free. I don't know if I would pay to see this film.

The ads look terrible.

The first trailer was awful. It gave away the ending and included a murky subplot with the mother and sister. The second trailer was much more focused and the little we see of the shark is intense. Tom Hanks could carry a movie by himself in Castaway. I have no faith that Blake Lively can carry a movie by herself. Still, I'll probably see this opening weekend since I have a MoviePass.

Oh if money isnt involved then I am in...worst case scenario is watching Goldblum be Goldblum ;)

I was thinking the same thing. Who was the character actor Roger Ebert declared was sufficient reason to believe any movie he's in is good? Goldblum is like that -- he's never made a bad movie.

Agreed.

Are you doing the MST3K reunion thing on Tuesday? It's a live reunion of all the cast (not just the Rifftrax guys).

A Country Called Home:

After rudderless 26 year old Ellie learns that her estranged, alcoholic father has died, her world is disrupted and she begins a journey that takes her to small-town Texas, where she finds direction, family, and friendship in this most unexpected place.

Good drama, a tidy ending, although they throw in enough "is she gonna" moments in there to make you wonder. Mary McCormack is excellent in her role.

One note: this movie does not hold back on the stereotypes of small-town Texans. Also, apparently, EVERYONE is somewhat f*ed up except the grandparents.

I would but I teach Tuesday nights :(

The Walk. Story of Phillippe Petit's highwire walk between the two towers of the World Trade Center. Didn't think this would be a film for me from the ads I'd seen, but I caught the end of it one day, and was hooked. The actual walk is staged much like a crime caper, which I guess in a way it was. And the final scenes turn out to be a pretty moving tribute to the two towers themselves, without coming across as sappy or maudlin.

And James Badge Dale is terrific in a small supporting role.

Ugh. Early reviews say ID4: R isn't even fun.

Sounds like Ghostbusters won't have to work too hard to be the most fun of the two.

The way they got rid of the aliens in the first one was so stupid anyway that I really had no interest in a sequel.

Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

That's bad. Very bad. I hope those reviews are wrong.

Hopefully.

The Guardian headline: Independence Day: Resurgence review – planet-smashingly boring sci-fi sequel (1 out of 5 stars)

Many have noted that the film is being released on the same date of the Brexit vote across the pond - an event those supporting leaving the EU are calling "Independence Day." In one of the first scenes, London is destroyed (again). Also, the president is a woman and the chief alien apparently has a similarity to a certain candidate for president on the other side. What a great sign when popcorn flicks take a foray into politics.

One of many questions I have is if the aliens blew up all the landmarks 20 years ago, how are they going to blow them up again? Certainly with our limited resources we have not gone to the trouble of building exact replicas of Big Ben and the Statue of Liberty, right?

Course not. We contracted out to China to make them for a third of the cost.

After a lot of debate, we built the Big Freedom and Statue of Freedom in their place.
