Barry Melrose...

Re: Barry Melrose...

"If they didn't call the elbow to the head, it's prison rules from now on."

That alone is worth all of the other stuff. :D

Re: Barry Melrose...

I like how he called Norm Bazin "Normie" and Doug Carr "Dougie" throughout the game, like he is now their BFF. I was also told that the UML student section was cheering/heckling Mr. Melrose with chants during the TV timeouts. Bar-ry Mel-rose

Re: Barry Melrose...

Me thinks it is good... Melrose on the call... despite he doesn't know so much about the college game. However, he's forgotten more about hockey thank anyone here knows. Be happy with what we have. :)

Re: Barry Melrose...

Also, you can tell Buccigross enjoys what he's doing, but he can be painful to listen to as well.

Agreed, I like Bussigross a lot, and live for his musical references when he does highlights, but something annoys me on his play by play.

Re: Barry Melrose...

I miss Bob Norton in the booth, you just assumed that he'd been drinking

I think MulletBoy has channeled Norton. I don't miss him gushing over all the HE yay-hoos nonstop, but will be happy when someone in charge actually realizes what a moron Melrose is with a microphone in hand.

Re: Barry Melrose...

Melrose, I believe, is still working under a long term contract with nESPN. Unfortunately for them, NBC took the NHL from them, or more correctly they took the NBA from NBC and NBC took what was left. That left Barry without a sport.

I miss Gary Thorne doing the NC$$ games; instead he's probably stuck down in Sarasota doing O's spring training games on MASN. I bet if NBC-SN had the Frozen Four, Doc Emerick would do the games for free. Doc might be annoying to listen to sometimes, but I love the fact that he's always mentioning players' roots both in NCAA and juniors. You could also bet that Doc would be cross-marketing the NC$$ tourney if he was doing NHL games this weekend.

agrees with you, and is sad.

I miss Tom saying, "... and here comes Boston U"

Emrick is absolutely tops, calls a smooth game and makes clean transitions, and has a working knowledge vocabulary like few talking heads. Add to that a great passion for the game and knowledge of its history. At all levels, including NCAA D-1 and major juniors. By contrast, you can keep Thorne. Awful in hockey. Non-stop shouting, even when it's not an exciting play. And you can always tell whom he roots for or follows...team of choice has players called by first & last names, opponents may get a last name only if lucky. Dates back to his days gushing over NJD on ESPN when they played a game on the network and he was their local pxp guy. Much rather see him toil in obscurity doing O's games on MASN and keeping under the national radar. And he's worse when paired with Melrose!

I'll agree that Doc has a passion for the game, and he always gives a shout out to players with college roots. However if you are going to put down Thorne (last time I saw him he was doing bowling), you have to recognize that Doc treats every game as if it is the seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals. Our boy here in Boston, Jack Edwards is guilty of the same thing, although in one-sided games he can revert to some comical banter with fellow UNH alum Andy Brickley.

As for Barry, I got to talk to him last year on the Friday of FF weekend. He was sitting right next to us at a steak place in St. Paul. I had to ask him about his qualities as a prognosticator since 3 of his 4 picks for the FF didn't make it. Just laughed it off saying that they paid him to talk. I really don't think he takes himself too seriously. Unfortunately, he doesn't take the college game very seriously either. I will give him props though for occasionally focusing on a teams strengths and weaknesses on the ice. Have to agree that he has forgotten about more hockey than I have ever known.

I might disagree on that a bit. There's a lot of very knowledgeable people on these boards. I bet I'm not the only one who watches a game on TV and makes a comment 5 seconds before one of the two broadcasters does.

I think Melrose treats the college hockey game crappy, because he's an NHL analyst and not a hockey analyst. I would say the guy should give more of a ****, but considering he works for ESPN and how the feel and present hockey I don't see the need to rake him over the coals for it.

Re: Barry Melrose...

Just got done watchng UND & Western Mich, .... and watching BU & Minn. ..... good announcers. East regionals , not so much ..... if I hear NHL one more time ....

Re: Barry Melrose...

..... if I hear NHL one more time ....
ESPN does not appreciate that there is a substantial base of passionate college hockey fans who know the game and in some cases (mine) pay relatively little attention to the NHL. I do keep forgetting about the emphasis on preventing hits from behind and the definition of hybrid icing so I appreciate those frequent reminders. Jeez.
