Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

I know that a search committee has been formed already. I do not know where they are in the process. It seems like their job has already been done for them however.

I am sure they have the committee working, and have no idea as well as to where they may be in the process either. I am sure that the decision by Denver and the timing of their decision are playing into the timing of the process here at Maine. Hopefully that will be sorted out this weekend and we can move forward here.

WCSH is reporting Jim Montgomery has been offered the Denver job

Despite reports to the contrary Jim Montgomery told me just moments ago he has not been offered the Denver coaching position. #mesports

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

No one knows what has been done yet. They very well may have their initial list of candidates complete, they very well may be waiting for Denver's decision on a coach before beginning their interview process. I believe that two of the four finalists for the Denver post are on a list that Maine would like to interview. It makes sense to let that process play out before starting the process at Maine.
Setting up a search committee during the season while your head coach is still employed seems to be kind of a foolish endeavor. Let's face facts here, if the money to buy out Tim's final year was not raised through donor's, we most likely would not even be talking about finding a new coach. I believe the final decision to let Tim go, came only after they had the necessary funds in hand.
I disagree about waiting on DU. Maine should take care of its business, its way, under its schedule. Don't let DU influence who they want to talk with. Don't let who they want to talk with make extraordinary demands or unduly stir the pot. Don't allow the players to dictate the process.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

With a female AD who will fire you after an amazing run. A lady who doesn't know what a back check is and will blindside you with no notice

That's a sexist comment and you should be ashamed of yourself. I'm not a woman. Whoever is selected will probably receive a minimum of a 2 - 3 year contract to demonstrate their competency. If I were selected to the position I certainly wouldn't worry about being fired, and if I were, I would be payed handsomely.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

First of all, from Corkum's standpoint, comments like these are going to limit your chances of working as an assistant anywhere in the future. It smacks as a desperate move, reeking of naked ambition from someone who badly wants to be on top of the pile. See Haig, Alexander.

But more importantly, if you are the select few folks at UMaine who are making the final decision, and have just trusted Corkum with the "interim" tag, and presumably given him some assurances of being in the mix for the top job (maybe even a fall-back role IF he wasn't the "chosen one") ... I'm pretty sure if I were on that board, and I saw Corkum's comments and public politicking for the job, I would be none too happy about it. For example - what prevents him from "taking his case to the people" in the future if they hire him, and he disagrees with the AD and/or top admin on some sensitive issues they'd rather keep under the tent?

Either it's a move motivated by desperate ambition to be the top guy where he thinks he needs the pulblic groundswell of support that is lacking elsewhere in his candidacy OR he has been told the job is virtually his, pending completion of a nominal effort by UMaine at the so-called "national search".

Regardless - I agree 100% with rufus' thoughts. Can't see how this helps Corkum's perception as a leader, and he should have held his tongue a little while longer.

I agree.

RPI has acted. Seth Appert is no longer a candidate for Denver. He has signed an extension through 2021.

I'd say that pretty much makes Montgomery the frontrunner. You can't really argue with the record he's put up.

As for Corkum, if they really want to see what he can do as an interim coach, and then base the decision to make him permanent on what he does in that period, the time to have done this was back in December. Now's the time to do a full-blown national search for a coach, but instead, the university's chosen to sit around for a month twiddling their thumbs while other schools lock up the top candidates. If only Maine had an administration like RPI's.

It is a fact
How many female GM's in MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL. Zero and their shouldn't be

NCAA needs to have two AD,s at D1 level. One for women's teams, one foe men's

Go back to your cave.

Go back to your cave.

I will and take women's sports with MD. If you think Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin or the AD at Alabama spends 1/50th the time on wondntscsports you are as dumb as I think you are, which is a frightening thought.
Keep being politically correct if it makes you feel special but I am results oriented and not interested in popularity contests.

Woild be the best thing ever for women's sports.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Lee Goldberg says Jim is the new coach at Denver. No official word yet

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Colossal f-up by Steve Abbott if Maine never even talked to him.

That's what happens when you stand around wringing your hands instead of acting decisively. This guy thinks he's Governor material?
