Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

I don't follow the logic either. Maine dismissed their head hockey coach. Everyone else should be dismissed as well. I don't want lingering guesses and assumptions to be made about who is or was responsible. Hire a new coach and allow him to bring in his own coaches. It's called "cleaning house" and removing all previous influences associated with the program.

Corkum's and Kerluke's contracts expire June 30th.

Interim coach Corkum's statement via Laura Reed on the University of Maine hockey page on Facebook.

I wanted to reach out to all of the Black Bear supporters and fans in order to connect and address all of the concerns you have about Maine Hockey. Without a doubt, our program means the world to many people across our state and I take immense pride that I have been able to compete in a Maine Jersey and Coach some tremendous players the past 5 years. With every ounce of my being, I will bring back the energy and electricity to Alfond Arena that has been missing... once again it will be the absolute best place in the country to watch a hockey game.

Our players will be held accountable to perform at their absolute best every time they step on the ice, as Coach Walsh held me accountable each and every shift. You will see, a high tempo, hard nosed physical team who can play with discipline and charisma. I understand that their is an assumed connection with Coach Whitehead, but coaching concepts and philosophies differ. If my position becomes permanent, I would implement the culture and brotherhood necessary to instill the passion our players and fans are desperate to see.

We are all a family... And I plan to initiate a grass roots effort to do whatever is necessary to make each and every one of you feel a part of this team. This connection has been lost and our players need your support. We have to do this together, let's bring back Maine Hockey to where it needs to be.

Feel free to call or email me with any questions or comments, I would love your input and feedback, it will help me re-connect this program to our community and our great state. (207-581-1166) robert.corkum@umit.maine.edu

Sincerely, Bob Corkum.

That grinding sound you heard in the background was Coach Whitehead being thrown under the bus by his former assistant. Wow.

Seriously, is this for real? I can understand someone saying that in the privacy and confines of an interview, but to "go public" with something like this??? You guys bettah be prayin' your AD is prepared to beat Denver to the punch on Monty ...

Pfffttt...you're like an old Grandma Chuckie.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Yeah, as much as I like Corkum, that kinda bothers me. As does the story, if true, that someone posted where he says, some time ago, "You're talking to the next head coach at Maine".

I got the same kind of vibe from the article in the BDN, where he says

We will be disciplined and the players will be held accountable on and off the ice.”

It seems to be a rather thinly veiled shot at Whitehead, like he doesn't believe this was the case under Whitehead. Now as much as I might agree, and have no problem with people criticizing Whitehead, it just seems kinda unseemly coming from him, and in the media. Not very professional. If he's held his tongue this long, then maybe he should have kept it that way. It's just pretty unbecoming to come out with these kind of comments now, now that the coach has been fired.

Everyone else blames Tim for the team's short comings, he might as well pile it on too. As far as Montgomery goes, if he is offered the job at DU what does he do? Let's see, do I accept this position with virtually unlimited resources or do I hold out for a potential job in Orono with limited resources?

As we did you Mrs montgomery

Okay mrs Corkum. Seriously, we get that you are hot and horny over Bob.

I'm not saying give the job to Jimmy. I'm saying why jerk us around and pretend you are going to have a national search when it looks like you are going to hand the job to Timmay's number 2 man. This interim crap is ridiculous. What other D1 school with an offseason coaching vacancy names an interim coach?

Yep, its a bit unconventional as it were, but I like the fact he's willing to put it out there. No guts, no glory. No pain, no gain. Like I said, it feels a bit to me like a coup d'etat and I havent decided yet how I feel about that but, its a bit refreshingly different. Of course anything we see or hear after ole gumshoe Whitehead gonna be a mild shockah to us :D

The rumor back when Bob showed up was he was going to replace Tim, maybe it was actually true? Still like to know who is throwing there name into the hat

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

So why haven't they even assembled that first group of coaches to be interviewed? They should have been setting up this search committee before the season even ended. The longer they drag this out, the more chance they have of having to settle for their third or fourth best choice.

Oh, wait, but they already got Corkum waiting in the wings, make him the interim, then goive him the job permanently once the season's over. Been there, done that.

No one knows what has been done yet. They very well may have their initial list of candidates complete, they very well may be waiting for Denver's decision on a coach before beginning their interview process. I believe that two of the four finalists for the Denver post are on a list that Maine would like to interview. It makes sense to let that process play out before starting the process at Maine.
Setting up a search committee during the season while your head coach is still employed seems to be kind of a foolish endeavor. Let's face facts here, if the money to buy out Tim's final year was not raised through donor's, we most likely would not even be talking about finding a new coach. I believe the final decision to let Tim go, came only after they had the necessary funds in hand.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

With a female AD who will fire you after an amazing run. A lady who doesn't know what a back check is and will blindside you with no notice

Yeah, there are definitely some considerations to taking that job right now that go beyond budget and facilities.

I know that a search committee has been formed already. I do not know where they are in the process. It seems like their job has already been done for them however.

First of all, from Corkum's standpoint, comments like these are going to limit your chances of working as an assistant anywhere in the future. It smacks as a desperate move, reeking of naked ambition from someone who badly wants to be on top of the pile. See Haig, Alexander.

But more importantly, if you are the select few folks at UMaine who are making the final decision, and have just trusted Corkum with the "interim" tag, and presumably given him some assurances of being in the mix for the top job (maybe even a fall-back role IF he wasn't the "chosen one") ... I'm pretty sure if I were on that board, and I saw Corkum's comments and public politicking for the job, I would be none too happy about it. For example - what prevents him from "taking his case to the people" in the future if they hire him, and he disagrees with the AD and/or top admin on some sensitive issues they'd rather keep under the tent?

Either it's a move motivated by desperate ambition to be the top guy where he thinks he needs the pulblic groundswell of support that is lacking elsewhere in his candidacy OR he has been told the job is virtually his, pending completion of a nominal effort by UMaine at the so-called "national search".

Regardless - I agree 100% with rufus' thoughts. Can't see how this helps Corkum's perception as a leader, and he should have held his tongue a little while longer.
