Are they gonna play at the mall too?
As most of us know, Michigan and Michigan State left the WCHA after the 1980-81 season. Regular matchups among those schools, Minnesota, and Wisconsin began again in the College Hockey Showcase, which ran from 1993-2010 (18 seasons). Records during the era 1993-present were:
Michigan v. Minnesota 9-9-0 showcase, 3-3-0 outside the showcase
Michigan v. Wisconsin 11-5-2 showcase, 2-1-0 outside the showcase
Michigan State v. Minnesota 4-9-5 showcase, 0-1-0 outside the showcase
Michigan State v. Wisconsin 10-7-1 showcase, 2-1-0 outside the showcase
Whether the WCHA was a better conference than the CCHA during that era is outside the scope of this thread. But even if the bottom of the CCHA has been consistently weaker, Michigan and Michigan State have generally been the top of the CCHA, and the history suggests that they aren't going to have any trouble matching up against Wisconsin or Minnesota. Arguably Wisconsin has more to worry about.
Given how evenly matched Michigan and Minnesota have been in recent times, that could become the conference's big rivalry (think Michigan-Ohio State in football). In fact, the all time record is fairly even, also (Michigan 117, Minnesota 128, 15 ties), despite Michigan's general incompetence through most of the 70's. It was apparently a good rivalry back in the 50's and 60's. Given that Minnesota and Michigan are the two biggest hockey states in the country, and have radically different hockey cultures, there's some fuel for the fire beyond the schools, too.
Wisconsin has been a middle of the road team in the WCHA for awhile. They've won one regular season title (2000), two conference titles (1998, 2013), and made the NCAA tournament 8 times in the last 18 years. It's a nice record, but doesn't compare to the upper echelon teams in the WCHA. Minnesota has 5 regular season titles, 4 tournament titles, and 12 NCAA appearances in that span. North Dakota has 7 regular season titles, 6 tournament titles, and 16 NCAA appearances in that span. Denver has 3 regular season titles, 4 tournament titles, and 12 NCAA appearances in that span. I agree that the Big 10 will likely be a battle between Michigan and Minnesota. Michigan State (whose program isn't that the same since Mason left) and Wisconsin will mix good and bad years. Ohio State and Penn State will likely remain the bottom feeders. Wisconsin has an amazing ability to win the national championship when they get the chance though. They've won a title 6 times in just 9 times reaching the Frozen Four. The other three years, they lost in the championship game.
The Badgers under Eaves are 5-4-1 against Michigan and 6-1-1 against Michigan State. We really aren't that worried.
But it's very true that regular season championships have never been the Badger's thing. Pretty decent post season record over the years though. I think all in all, we'll manage just fine in the B1G and nobody's going to be marking off any wins on the calendar against us ahead of time.
You, sparty and ohio won't be marking off wins against Penn State ahead of time!![]()
True. And sadly Bowling Green won't be able to do the same against Michigan next year. Unless you're playing them? I don't know, just assuming with limited nc games, you'd try to avoid another embarrassment if possible.![]()
From this article...
http://blogs.detroitnews.com/colleg...renson-to-watch-minnesota-yale-with-interest/
Berenson said he expects the Big Ten Network to have hockey doubleheaders, feeling one game could start at Minnesota at 5 p.m. with the second starting at Michigan at 8:30.
Now, Berenson will have to get used to the BTN dictating starting times and he knows mid-week games are a possibility.
I can't believe I hadn't thought of this before. I knew they wanted to spread out games for TV time, and I knew they publicly said they also want to maintain the traditional weekend times. Double headers like that are a good solution (though it would probably be flipped in that example, so the eastern time zone game starts earlier and the central time game later, so they are closer to a normal start time locally). I guess too many people were finding every little thing to complain about.
The Big Ten now has a Twitter account: @B1GHockey
I'd love to see people express their opinions about the shootout to them.
And those in the west won't enjoy having their games end at 11pm. But it won't be every game, and people will get used to it.
A much better option than mid-week and Sunday games.
But what stumps me is basketball. Basketball rules the BTN in the football offseason. Will we be screwed and have to go watch live streams online?

We might just see more BIg schools jumping into the icebox now.Note that the tweet claims this is in addition to the schools' "standard" cut. If true, that number is shocking.
Let's put it in context. If you want to highball the cost of a full ride at $40,000, the cost of all 18 hockey scholarships per year is only $720,000. Therefore, this bonus would cover every scholarship, the head coach's salary, the salary of assistant, and a significant portion of the team's travel budget.
If this is true, that is some carrot for more schools to take a look at hockey.
