That's an inside joke.
While the words no longer convey their original meaning, at one time "moron" "imbecile" and "idiot" were technical terms that have since seeped into general use:
Moron: IQ between 50 and 75
Imbecile: IQ between 25 and 50
Idiot: IQ between 0 and 25
Sort of like what has happened to "retarded." At one time, "retarded" meant that something slowed down the normal course of development. "mental retardation" was a technical term that meant something happened to interfere (i.e., retard) the normal course of mental development. Now the pressure from the PC police has become so strong that in the latest edition of the DSM, they've actually removed that term from diagnostic use.
It won't matter. Whatever new term they adopt, it will seep into general usage and in another 20 years we'll have to stop using it and come up with a new term.
