Re: Atlantic Hockey Pick 'em 2009-10

Sorry to clutter the Pick'em thread, but it doesn't look like we have a separate thread for the league.
Anyone know if the scheduling format for next year has been worked out yet? As a suggestion, why don't 12-team leagues run three groups of four for scheduling? You could keep 28 games (and get rid of unbalanced scheduling) by playing the other 3 division teams home and away (12 games) and the other 8 home or away (16 games). Give the three divison champs and one wild card (2nd place team w/best record) the bye in the 1st round and home ice in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Seed everyone else based on conference record. My suggestion:
East
Bentley
Holy Cross
AIC
UConn

Central
Sacred Heart
Army
RIT
Canisius

West (Old CHA?)
Mercyhurst (or UAH, based on Lerch's column today)
Air Force
Niagara
Robert Morris

Thoughts?

I would prefer to see just two divisions, with 3 games against each team within division (15 games) and two against each team in the other division (12 games), for a total of 27 games, providing opportunity for an additional OOC contest, which I think is vital to close the gap with the other conferences. The only issue that I see here is long travel to/from Air Force for one game, but federal taxpayers can cover that as now. One major improvement over the current schedule would be getting rid of the 2 vs 4 games per team imbalance, which can be a distinct advantage or disadvantage from year to year.

East: Bentley, Holy Cross, AIC, UConn, S Heart, Army

West: RIT, Mercyhurst (or UAH?), Canisius, Niagara, R Morris, and Air Force

Post-season: bottom two teams in each division play in one game against #3 and #4; winners play best 2 out of 3 against #1 and #2 hosts in the OTHER DIVISION; two winners from each of those best 2 out of 3 games go to tourney at RIT.

Other ideas?

Re: Atlantic Hockey Pick 'em 2009-10

I like the 2 division idea, and if scheduled properly, teams can do their 3rd games in the same weekend (ie RIT can play their 3rd game against mercyhurst on friday night, and their 3rd against canisius on saturday). again, Air Force kinda messes this up, but I think they could work around it.

I want to comment on some of the upsets we saw in AHA last night. There were 5 games last night, no one got more than 3 points. 22 people posted picks for this week. 21 correctly picked RIT over UConn. 21 correctly picked St. Lawrence over Sacred Heart. No one called the tie between Army and Colgate (in fact, no one called army to win either.) 2 People called AIC over Holy Cross, and 4 called Bentley over Mercyhurst. This just shows how close teams in this league are. Anyone can beat anyone and any given day.

Re: Atlantic Hockey Pick 'em 2009-10

The only issue that I see here is long travel to/from Air Force for one game, but federal taxpayers can cover that as now.

I doubt Air Force would make the trip for one game. Under that scenario, they'd probably work a deal with three other "division" members to play different teams Friday and Saturday. And, while the two divisions make sense geographically, the balance of power is heavily tilted towards the west. If you look at the average finish every year they've been in the league, you get: 1) RIT 2) AF 3) MH 4) SH 5) HC 6) Army 7) CT 8) (tie) Ben and Can 10) AIC. So you'd get 1,2,3, 8 & the two new teams on one side and 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 on the other.

One major improvement over the current schedule would be getting rid of the 2 vs 4 games per team imbalance, which can be a distinct advantage or disadvantage from year to year.

This is my major issue. And I know Air Force has benefitted, for example, from having AIC on the schedule 4 times but only playing Army twice (their condition for approving AF's membership, as I understand it). Whatever format comes out, I hope its balanced and fair for everyone.

This just shows how close teams in this league are. Anyone can beat anyone and any given day.

Not to reveal any picking secrets, but home ice has been huge thus far in the season. Army was the only team to get a point on the road last night.

Agreed, AF could travel to play two nearby division teams on the same weekend. But, I now see the problem in reverse when it is a western division team's turn to travel to AF for one game. Perhaps western division travel partners could schedule an OOC game with CC or DU?

And, while the two divisions make sense geographically, the balance of power is heavily tilted towards the west. Yes, the only way that I could resolve this one was to switch the regional play offs having the #3 and #4 teams play the #1 and #2 teams in the other division to see who goes to the tourney. Although a bi-partite regular season ranking would not be allowed, I am not convinced that the imbalance of power would dramatically affect the regular season records that much.
