Arizona State Hockey Next on the Chopping Block?

I'm wondering why the Coyotes aren't considering the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phx. Its practically downtown where the baseball, basketball venues are, it hosted the Phoenix Roadrunners of WHL/WHA & other leagues for about 40 years, & can seat about 14,000. But maybe too much money is needed for the upgrade to meet NHL standards?

I think the "for about 40 years" part of your post may hold the answer.

Yes...........turns out about $40-$50 million in upgrades needed vs the $15 million or so in additions needed at ASU arena. & the extra revenue from extra seating did not get the ROI they were looking for. But now it may come down to what the City of Tempe decides & then potentially revisit Memorial or different city.

What I have not found in any story is what is the motivation behind GRA not wanting the Coyotes as a tenant going forward? It's not like there is another NHL team coming to town that is going to replace that revenue. Booting a team out with nothing to replace them other than possible "more impactful events" makes no sense. I find it hard to believe they are going to find 40+ events to book in a 9 months span EVERY YEAR that bring in more revenue than an NHL team.

Let's say 20 big concerts that can sell the place out, two monster truck jams, arena cross, Disney on Ice and... You still need 20+ more events. And that's just to get back to where you were before. Coyotes are only in town half the time. You could have hosted all these events when they were on the road and doubled your revenue. I don't get it. The arena schedule gets really thin after June of 2022.

All I can think is the NHL deal isn't bringing in enough revenue and they are having to turn away more profitable events. Then again, they could have a marketing "guru" running the place who thinks the NHL is "dragging down" their venue's "good" name.
