Arizona State Hockey Next on the Chopping Block?

Look out ASU Sun Devils, your hockey program might be next to lose funding.

"Robert Morris University president leaving for Arizona State"
https://www.wtae.com/article/robert-morris-chris-howard-arizona-state/38665680#

I saw that announcement & and my knee jerk reaction was - not good. But then most institutions assign the dirty work to an out-going administrator so the new one coming in is "clean" and gets rapport & respect quickly. They immediately look good compared to the one that left.

However, nothing is forever, nothing is guaranteed. You could be right. I will have to dig in more to what his responsibilities are although at first glance it doesn't appear to include athletics nor sports fund raising. It seems he is assigned to improving educational excellence, which was his claim to fame, however defined. Now that maybe bad for athletics if funding to such is decreased to increase funding in his area.

I guess we'll find out sooner or later........will be a huge disappointment to me if they cut hockey.

Aren't they building a nice new rink?
Seems that would indicate the program is safe.

Yes, the arena is maybe 50-75% complete but it is multi-purpose.
You can look at that arena from a financial view & eventually see it's costs & revenues from various activities along with side streams. There are no guarantees for anything. Heck, UND dropped women's hockey, I figured they'd be about the last to do such.

On another hand there is a donor that contributed a major chunk of money to start this program up. I don't know what terms there are associated with such donation but ASU has to address anything there also, which might help sustain the program. If it was in the form of an investment, then with a 4% annual return, you'd see something like $1.5MM to $2MM in ongoing revenue. That pays a nice chunk of operating cost. I don't believe any of that money was used on the arena, that came from other donors and taxpayer bonds.

The original post was stupid.
But not nearly as dumb as thinking an NHL team will actually play in a 5,000 seat venue.
If that is the best bluff the Coyotes can come up with they will be headed to Quebec or Kansas City in the near future.
The Coyotes will either be back in GRA under a new contract or they will be leaving town. There is zero chance they play at ASU.

They're supposedly asking City of Tempe to build a new arena to house them. I don't see that happening. I think you are correct, if they can't get agreement with Gila River I suspect they'll leave for another city. But stay tuned, strange things happen.

Houston would seem quite likely. Biggest market without hockey. An owner that’s loaded, wants hockey and has an arena and no need to change division or conference and would provide a good regional rival for Dallas, Nashville, Colorado & St Louis.

I heard Duluth was giving them a sweetheart deal. You heard it here first. ‍♂️
