You'll be awesome. The rush and excitement of leaving a long career with a big company for a young start-up with hungry, intelligent coworkers is pure crack.

Yeah, but don't most people who experiment with crack end up homeless and broke?

(just kidding BassAle. I hope you end up a tech billionaire and remember all of us little people.)

A new manager position on my team just opened for internal apps and we're onboarding at least 5 new consultants in the next month. Even though I've only been here 6 months, I'm going to apply for it. I left my mega-firm for more leadership opportunities like this and I think I'm ready to make my case. I might not get picked this round, but it would be good to at least see how they evaluate candidates for promotion.

Internship:

First time ever having a cube or something resembling my own space.

Everyone is weird in a good way.

Caseload is only at 3.

They're going to work with my ADHD.

And kids are amazing in general.

It's not what you think, Kep. They are FTEs like me and we are a niche consulting firm. We aren't hiring them to advise us, we're billing them out at $200/hr to give clients advice they only sometimes listen to. ;-)

It was just an easy cheap shot. I couldn't resist. :-)

You should check out r/clientsfromhell. Stories of consultant abuse. Clients are the worst.

This is a rant about work. Not about the work, but how I've never really been part of my organization.

So I'm retiring at the end of the month after 30 years. My boss asked me for some information to include into this month's department newsletter for my 3 decades of work. None of that showed up in the newsletter. Not even a note that I'm retiring.

And this is not even close to the first time I've not been recognized for something significant-

for my 25th anniversary, my supervisor did nothing for it- not even hand me my certificate that I'm sure he has on his desk somewhere. I was supposed to have a group lunch at a reasonably nice restaurant. Nothing.

A while ago, I twice won some pretty significant awards in my company- some of the highest technical awards that are given. No mention either time in a department meeting of these awards. Nothing.

This whole crap started early, too- back when I started, everyone's birthday in the department was celebrated. Except mine.

I honestly can't wait to leave. And there is not one single person I will really miss.

For so much effort to make people think they are part of the group, I never really saw that it was applied to everyone.

That really sucks. I'm sorry that happened. I know I vent here about similar slights so I totally get it. I'm not sure it's so hard for people, not necessarily companies, to just be good, and recognize the work. You are owed so much. Don't look back when you leave and enjoy your retirement. Or maybe do something different working for a new company that knows how to appreciate employees.

Thanks. Not planning on working- we've saved enough to last. If I get super bored, I may do some consulting, but that's not going to happen anytime soon. The weird part about my situation is that it *seems* to just be the organizations I'm in. I did get those technical awards- from a different organization. And the corporate reaction to the pandemic has been very employee centric, as I've pointed out before. But the new corporate goal of "caring" is going to be tough in my organization. Especially when you look at real DEI metrics- there's one woman and one Asian as supervision in my organization. A handful of Tech Specialist- which is what you get when you get a PhD. But DEI are just words without any real backing. (this coming from a white dude)

One key thing is that I've known more than a handful of people who died in the middle of their career, and a few people who died pretty quickly after retiring after a pretty long career. So retiring when I'm not quite 55- the plan is to just enjoy life.

If this FF was next year, I would tell you that I'll meet you at TD Garden in between periods at the games. It would be great to see posters again.

Didn't he develop a reputation for brutality and cruelty in Syria?

His nickname is The Butcher of Syria.

He is believed to be behind the Kramatorsk railway station attack, that left at least 52 mostly women, children and elderly dead.[SUP][15][/SUP][SUP][16][/SUP][SUP][17][/SUP] According to retired admiral James G. Stavridis,[SUP][1][/SUP] "The appointment of this new general indicates Vladimir Putin’s intent to continue this conflict for months, if not years...He is the goon called in by Vladimir Putin to flatten cities like Aleppo in Syria... He has used tools of terrorism throughout that period, including working with the Syrian forces, torture centers, systematic rape, nerve agents. He is the worst for the worst."

We should forcibly relocate all the remaining Dump and Putin supporters to Florida, build a wall/levee at the border, and wait for the hurricanes and climate change-induced flooding to finish them off.
