Been working on 2 separate deals with a customer for ~2 years each. They've had their separate paths and challenges, and completely coincidentally after all that time both deals closed on the same day last week, which will bring an additional $3.9B (with a B) of revenue to my company.

Early days yet, but so far, nobody has said, "thank you." Apropos of the thread title, I'm definitely not getting a raise.

I get those occasionally as well. It's usually pitched as a part-time remote/moonlighting gig and now they often aren't even mentioning that the job is training AI, but you can read between the lines when they say things like, "no meetings or calls, just step-by-step guides you follow when it suits."

I love that there are many extremely intelligent and savvy people out there who are working hard and creatively to poison LLM samples. Evidently it only takes a fractional part of the training set, these people are clever enough to make their efforts undetectable, and obviously ingest is automated so there's no effective human oversight.

Interesting but not overly helpful. Helps for people who are major users of online stuff. But I’ve never done FB, and have avoided using the cloud for privacy reasons already. The adnausium extension sounds interesting, but does it work if you already have an ad blocker running?

And the data strike thing isn’t described well enough to know what I can do.

A positive work thing for me recently. A book that I helped co-author a chapter on was recently published. Fish Hatchery Management, 3rd Edition may sound boring to you all but to me and many others, it is a super valuable culmination of several years worth of work to update and expand on the previous edition published in 2001. This one adds several chapters including several focusing on specific species commonly farmed in the United States and Canada for sportfishing or food. I got to co-author the chapter on Rainbow Trout and Steelhead after the other authors approached me needing help expanding on the sections covering Broodstock, Breeding, and egg and sac fry culture. Its the first time I have been a book chapter author and the the first publication I get to add to my CV since 2013 (working in private industry, I get less opportunity to publish).

Wife called today ready to go scorched earth. I was ready to hype her up to do it, but also tried to back her down from it. (My favorite motto is "May the bridges I burn light my way forward.")

Backstory, she'd been the director of sales for independent living since right after the pandemic started. Two years ago she was let go after being put on a bullshit PIP (they literally terminated her for failure to improve just two weeks into the plan, oh and they doubled the metrics every week of the plan when she actually hit the goals) where the company was just looking to cut people.

Anyway, after having the headache of that old company, she took a lesser role for less cash, because it was 1/4th the commute time and was a relief on her mental sanity.

Within the last year, because of her former exoerience, her role has been Director of Sales with all of the responsibility but none of the recognition or pay.

She saw a director position was available in-house at another location where her commute would be similar to the old job, but the pay would make it worth it. And she would have the title and recognition. Talked with a regional director to get his input (because her director at her location isn't going anywhere anytime ever, so she'd be stuck career wise) and he encouraged her to apply. So she did. Phone interview went really well and the recruiter said she is the best fit for the role.

Then... three weeks of radio silence. Nothing from the recruiter, nothing from anyone in the building she would be working from, nothing from her regional boss. So she sent a follow up email thanking the recruiter for the time and to see if a decision had been made yet.

Recruiter replied: "Oh, regional director said he already talked to you about the position and your career path with the company just before July 4th. So the position is still open and we are still looking."

Reader, that conversation never took place.

My wife is glad she has been applying outside of her company because the honeymoon phase seems to have abruptly ended with her current employer. But she would be even happier if she could get more than FOAD letters.
