Another Book Thread

Jumped straight into Starship Troopers. It's really good. Really good.

about 25% in. Deep parallels with Full Metal Jacket (obviously).

edit: Heinlein was not at all subtle in this book.

Yeah, I just didn't feel like the Swedish movie captured that. The changed story was such a bad pivot.

This is interesting. I've heard people with strong opinions say the exact opposite. I have neither seen the Swedish version not read the book. The US version did not impress me, putting it mildly, despite Rooney Mara taking one for the team.

About halfway through Starship Troopers.

I had always assumed it was a criticism of the fascist tendencies of the right. Mostly because the movie was so over the top. But after getting through half of it, it's obvious there isn't much of a critique at all. Huh. I feel very stupid now.

Anyways, it's not bad, just, not what I expected.

The movie is full on satire, but people didn't get it at first because the source material (Heinlein's novel) wasn't satire at all. Which actually makes the movie that much better.

Haha now I'm going to have to rewatch it.

This has been a jarring read. Especially when I saw the most highlighted passages on the kindle. I kept thinking, "Thats an odd passage to highlight. It's pretty faschy for my taste"

"Oedipus" was a made up name by Sophocles, or the folktale tradition he adapted. It is typically translated as "swollen foot" from him being left to die of exposure on a mountaintop by Dad of the Year, King Laius. That's what I was taught.

But TIL this is not philologically accurate. It translates more closely as a reference to him guessing the Sphinx riddle.

"That guy who knows feet."

Took a while longer but finished Book 5 of Dune. And started Book 6. Almost done with the father's epic story.

Which one is your favorite?
I recently came across a unique book focused on attract money wealth subconscious reprogramming: https://danielbenabraham.com/success...-affirmations/. It's not your typical motivational read; instead, it's designed as a reprogramming tool to influence your consciousness. I've been dedicating about 5 minutes each morning to read it, and I can honestly sense a positive shift in how I feel about myself after incorporating this practice into my routine.

Pulled All the President's Men down off the shelf yesterday for a reread. It might be a more interesting read now than it was in 1974. Context.
