Semi finals at JWHL Challenge Cup - Juniors

Chicago Mission vs Chicago Young Americans
NAHA vs Belle Tire

Great hockey to watch! Good luck to everyone!

Re: American and Canadian U16/U19 AAA Hockey

Quick recap of how these games went: Both the Chicago teams skated hard and teams had to settle it in a shootout where CYA ends up the victors. I've seen CYA play a few times this season and they beat a very good Mission team that beat #1 ranked Shattuck four consecutive games a month back. In the other semi-final game, NAHA jumped out to a 3-1 lead but were unable to hold on to it. BT scored the game winner with .4 seconds on the clock giving BT a hard fought 4-3 victory. The Championship game saw Belle Tire win 4-0 in a game where CYA had two long 5 on 3 power plays and were unable to convert. CYA also had several other power plays (5) where they never got a shot on net during a few of them. BT defense very strong throughout the whole tournament. This is the same group that won Nationals at 16U last year and moved up to 19U. They are back to back tourney champs at the JWHL Challenge Cup, but different age groups.

Does it really matter who wins these things as opposed to playing well against good competition and getting in the recruiting notebook of a number of schools?

I prefer showcases. Play 4 or 5 games and go home. Save winning as the primary objective for the post season.

Agreed. Especially in the jwhl tournament, which was very long and the elite teams had to play 3 or 4 blowouts before getting to some decent competition.

Disagree. Players hate showcases. They prefer to be working towards a goal in each tournament. Showcases are a just a bunch of random scrimmages.

My daughter played in the JWHL and didn't mind the showcase weekends. It was just her regular season since the standings mattered and led to playoff seeding. It also helps when you get contacted from university coaches after a given weekend - you see the real value in having all the teams in one place!

That is my point. Those were not true "showcase" tournaments. Those were league games which mattered. The players I know don't like the true showcase tournaments which are simply tournaments but no one wins/ no playoffs etc. Travel somewhere, play 4-5 games and go home. What is wrong with having a tournament champion? I get that scouts like to see certain matchups and those tournaments will usually try to match up the better teams to play each other. My point is the players generally like to know that there is some final or chance to win. Especially for teams that are not in the upper echelon. They are relegated to playing other weaker teams without a chance to test their mettle against the stronger teams. Yes you end up with a few blowouts along the way but having a winner is nice.

I understand your point. I guess it comes down to what you expect to get out of the showcase.
Beantown is a perfect example: I manage a midget AA team in the Toronto area and tell my parents that the Sunday games are for them and the girls, the scouts don’t really care who wins, they’re gone by Sunday morning.

Re: American and Canadian U16/U19 AAA Hockey

I'm not totally surprised about the goalie situation. At times it's hard to gage the quality of the tender because of the ridiculous talent in front of them. Sometimes the coaches, even at the National level, like to scout a Brianne McLaughlin type, who played on a mediocre RMU club, yet earned a spot on the Olympic team.

I am as shocked as you I have watched the Selects play against U16 Ontario West Selects. 0-0 3 periods and overtime. Teams like Ontario West or Stoney Creek or Vancouver all went to OT with Selects. The goalie play was excellent most of the games were even shots or close.

Aren't there 2 bronze medals at each age group?

They're just like the NCAA which gives out bronze semifinalist trophies to the 2 semi final losers.

At u14 the semi scores were:
MN Green Giants 8 CYA 0
Assabet 7 Jr Flyers 0
So after getting trounced 8-0 & 7-0...hey, here’s a medal- good job! LOL
