We had the sales tax implemented here in Arizona last year. But, I've found that it's not always applied. It appears that if your sale is fulfilled directly by Amazon, you pay sales tax, but if your sale is fulfilled by another vendor, then sales tax is often not charged.

Bob-That is pretty much what we have found. But usually the items that Amazon determines are eligible for the over $35 free shipping are the ones that they fulfill. Those from other vendors usually have their own shipping charges and do not qualify as part of the $35. For most, i suspect it does not make much of a difference and in fact i am not sure how much it really affects our bottom line cost overall.

Technically you are responsible to pay the state for the sales tax not collected by out of state internet sellers, including Amazon.com. That was rarely enforced by the state revenue departments, but I suspect it could be a nasty shock if you were audited by the state.

It was much easier to lean on Amazon to start collecting the tax than to try and ensure compliance from every individual resident, particularly as amazon has built out its distribution network to more states.

True. Haven't ever heard of people being gone after for that, but technically it's possible.

I don't even know how they'd know what internet purchases you've made, but the NSA could probably give them a list!

I'm one of the few that I know for sure tabulates my internet purchases at tax time. Not only because it's the morally right thing, but I imagine that "pays his 'use tax'" is one of the check box elements in play within the IRS audit-candidate-picker-engine, the parameters of which are actually more closely guarded than Google search algorithms but it doesn't seem unlikely, anyway.

I just use my state's formula for estimating use tax owed on internet purchases (it is based on your adjusted gross income). I'm pretty sure I come out ahead, plus it is way easier. I know some people that always put $0 instead of using the estimate or using their actual purchases, that always seems like asking to be audited.

Or course, as more internet sellers start collecting Maine sales tax, using Maine Revenue Service estimated tax owed on internet purchases formula becomes less and less of a good deal...

Mrs. EoDS today proposed Amazon Prime for the free video service and the free shipping on stuff.

I'm not sure what to make of this, it's $79/year for what looks like limited (but not negligible) amounts of shows and free shipping (note: shipping, not discounted goods).

The $39 deal also applies to Amazon Mom, and if memory serves me correctly, you and your wife somewhat recently became proud parents. My wife knows more than I, but it includes 20% off diapers and wipes and I believe you can share the membership with someone(s). Between the Mom and the Student deals, I've had prime for years without paying.
