Amazing Race 19 Normal Contestants Survivor Winners and Olympians

Re: Amazing Race 19 Normal Contestants Survivor Winners and Olympians

Sorry that I missed this point, but how did the teams know where the pit stop was if they did not get a clue at the orphanage?
Everybody got the clue, which was that little medallion. The sign saying give up all your cash was separate from getting the clue -- hence the trick.

Ok, I saw that everybody got the medallion, but did not realize that it contained the next clue, especially since the first 3 groups or so did not give up all their money. I did see the first group look at it and say something like "what the heck is this?"

I was falling asleep at that point, but the impression I got was that the medallion was the clue -- it was a symbol of the palace that was the pitstop.

I looked up why they were referring to it as the "present Sultan's palace," wondering whether it was anything like the Sultan of Brunei. The story is very interesting:

The City of Jogjakarta and the Kingdom of Jogjakarta was established as a result of a "Gianti war treaty" (Perjanjian Gianti) by HRH Prince Mangkubumi, who later become HRH Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Officially, the creation of Kingdom of Jogjakarta is dated to October 7, 1756 as a result of civil war among the bloodline of The Kingdom of Mataram. The civil war was fought against Hamengkubuwono's and his elder brother, HRH Sunan Pakubuwono II. This civil war marked the end of the Kingdom of Mataram and resulted in the birth of the Kingdom of Jogjakarta and the Kingdom of Surakarta.

The root of the civil war started when Sunan Pakubuwono II agreed to cooperate with the Dutch colonial government and submit to foreign (western) powers. His younger brother, HRH Prince Mangkumbumi (HRH Sultan Hamengkubuwono) stood against the concept, due to concern that his people would become slaves under Dutch rule. The Javanese slaves were used to work for businesses owned by V.O.C. and the Dutch Colonial Government and exported to present day Suriname in South America. In the Netherlands itself, some of the Dutch people stood against the policy of their home government.

Prince Mangkubumi fought until the defeat of the Pakubuwono forces and declared sovereignty in the Kingdom of Jogjakarta south of the original Kingdom of Mataram. Because of this historical act of bravery and sacrifice, Jogjakarta is given Special Administrative Region (SAR) status, making the Province of Jogjakarta the only province headed by a monarchy.

That was my understanding while watching it too. They showed the first team to get the medallion subsequently asking a local if they knew what the medallion meant. Maybe things would have been clearer if the local didn't know and then the team was confused, couldn't find the pit stop, and would have headed back to the orphanage to read the sign properly. Also, leading up to the orphanage Phil said that teams that gave up all their money would get "additional information" to help them find the pit stop but they never showed anyone getting that info or using it, IIRC, which may have increased viewer confusion as well.

Well the blonde twins get eliminated and boy were they annoying tonight. As much as they wanted to make you think it might be somebody else it was a no brainer. father and son did not work well together. First the father doesn't want to take notes on the shrine challenge. Then the whole second class bus situation, should know the rules boys. Also for the snowboarders how can you give up your clue? Not smart.

Disappointing ending on the show last night. The snowboarders were the first to reach the dancers and first to depart. They left with the same wrong assumption that 2 of the other 3 teams left with. Unfortunately for them, the cab drivers of the other 3 teams all commiserated via phone (apparently without the teams' prompting) and took them all to the right destination for the pit stop. It seems like that ought to be against the rules but I don't know how you can stop it. I still have no clue how Jeremy and Sandy are still in the race. They have been unimpressive throughout and seem to get bailed out repeatedly including last night. I'm rooting for anyone but them next week in Atlanta.

There are dozens of examples of where teams have gotten completely hosed by taxis rides. So it is hard to begrudge a team that finally caught a break from a taxis driver to get ahead in the game.

I see your point. It just felt 'wrong' to me...and judging by the CBS messageboards to many others as well.

Last night shows what I don't like about the Race. They make it out to be one long race that takes weeks to complete. The truth is that it is a series of very short races and a team can get eliminated by any one of these sprints. This was another example of a team that had completely dominated getting eliminated by a mistake that the writers not only intended to trip up several teams, it did trip up several teams. They were only one of two teams that actually solved the clue. Frustrating. Hoping for Amani and Marcus at this point.

Well Ernie and Cindy killed that final challenge to win the million, note that in the instructions they stated you can not use notes. I think out of the 3 in the finals they were probably the most deserving to win based on how they raced since the snowboarders got bounced last week. The minute everybody started talking about Marcus and Amani having home field advantage you kind of knew they wouldn't win. It might have been closer if Jeremy and Sandy hadn't gone to the wrong spot. I really wonder how many times the cab drivers gps recalculated or if they just kept replaying it to give the impression that Jeremy and Sandy might catch up.

I loved that challenge.

Ernie's still got to work on his self-esteem.

This interview (which is pretty interesting) says they were more than an hour ahead.

When I put Marcus Pollard on my fantasy team 11 years ago, it was with the understanding that he could land a plane.
