Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

These are some great reports on Cowley. Sounds like a good kid with a lot of potential.

Gwoz to UAH--I just don't see it happening. Ever.

Well, you are the one who cracked wise when I reminisced about the fried corn meal mush at Writer's Manor! :)

I see it as that Gwoz' stock has plummeted. He is not an easy dude to work with in any way shape or form. Some people seemed to think that there would have been a mass exodus upon his dismissal, yet all the other coaches are still there and none of the 3 players plus 1 recruit who left can in any way be attributed to Gwoz being gone. To be honest, Gwoz fielded a bizarre roster last season and the program is left with the reality that the roster will feature 2 seniors with a very distinct possibility of either having another short bench or practically half the team being freshmen. Look, Gwoz stated when he got here that he would like to have a program that competed on the national stage yearly (pretty much did that) and having as close to balanced classes as he could get, so there would not be rebuilding every 3 or 4 years. The program is just as unbalanced as when he arrived, which is a failure on his behalf. While thinking about it all recently, I personally have accepted that a change was needed and I hope that Monty is the right guy...I look forward to meeting him and hope DU is on the right track.

From your lips to God's ears.

Ha....Writer's Manor, the old DU spot...that place went to hell a while back, got abandoned, turned into a crackhead squatters delight and got demolished....probably all due to the fried corn meal mush ;)

I loved Writer's Manor. We used to hang at the pool and ordered drinks from their poolside waitresses. As long as we spent a little money and behaved ourselves, management never gave us a hassle. Former DU great Ed Hays hung there often.

Chris, let me clarify--Old Pio is the fried cornmeal mush gourmet, not I.
That delicacy has never passed through these lips.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Graduation, lunch with the folks, first professional game, 4 goals. Not a bad day all around.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Adrian Dater is a writer who covers the Colorado Avalanche for the Denver Post. Here's one thought from his Sunday column in advance of the draft this week.

===> Some rumors today about Dion Phaneuf possibly being on the trade block. If the Avs got him, they’d almost certainly have to deal Paul Stastny to get him – in large part just to make the math work on the salary cap. Phaneuf’s cap hit is $6.5 million, just under Stastny’s $6.6 million. Like Stastny, Phaneuf can be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Would I make that trade if I’m GM of the Avs? Sure I would. Especially if I knew I was getting MacKinnon in another seven days. Assuming the Avs don’t take Jones, they’ll need to add more on defense and Phaneuf would be a nice get for Stastny I think. Yeah, they might lose him for nothing after one year, but that might have happened with Stastny too.
I’m not aware of any actual talks so far between the Avs and Leafs on this though. But let’s see how the week plays out. It’s going to be interesting I have a feeling.<===

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Hope his name gets called!
Drew(2nd round) seemed to get the most pre-draft press and Nick(3rd round) no so much. Then Q seemed to get very little attention on the U18 . At the U18 World Championship he did well and seemed to be very steady throughout the whole tourney. Being invited to the WJC Evaluation Camp could help. (I know the camp is after the draft, but just getting his name on the list should be a plus.)
If he continues to improve the way Nick and Drew did, watch out. As it is he would be the first line center.

Drew Yr. 1 5-14-19 Yr.2 23-23-46
Nick Yr. 1 7-11-18* Yr. 2 13-28-41
Quentin Yr. 1 10-9-19 Yr. 2 ?-?-??
*missed around 10 games due to injury

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Hope Sam Brittain and the Ostrow brothers and their families are OK with the flooding in Calgary. (Think Kyle is in Denver for the summer. )
The Flames' Saddledome--first 8 rows of seats were under water.
Guess Chris Butler won't be practicing there.
