All Things Denver, XXX1X

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

Interesting: In this survey of 2015's Best & Worst Cities for Hockey Fans, DU was rated 4th from the bottom in both Accessible College Hockey Stadiums and Friendly & Engaged College Hockey Fans, beating out just Canisius, AIC, and Holy Cross on both counts.

(BTW congrats to the DU lacrosse program...awesome achievement!)

If you look at the explanation on how these rankings were created, it indicates that accessibility is entirely about size of arena vs. size of city. It really has nothing to do with parking, or how easy it is to get to.

And here is their criteria for friendliness and engagement:

"Friendliness & Engagement of NCAA Division I Hockey Fans (Number of Twitter Followers Plus Number of Facebook “Likes” per Capita): Half Weight"

Who came up with this very strange study? I look forward to further studies on the friendiless and engagement of various things. And further studies on the accessibility of things, where the actual access to those things is irrelevant!

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

Remember Mike Szmatula ?
From Jeff Cox, sbncollegehockey.com
This isn't the first time there has been controversy or the possibility of Szmatula leaving the Northeastern program. Originally a Sacred Heart commit, Szmatula de-committed from the Pioneers to verbal to NU.

However, after a stellar final season of junior hockey with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL, he tried to get out of his commitment to Northeastern. Szmatula wanted to follow his junior coach Jim Montgomery to Denver University, but Madigan wouldn't let him out of his National Letter of Intent.

Szmatula departs Northeastern after 2 years. If he transfers, would still sit out a year--age 24 beginning junior year of eligibility.

Magness Arena is nice, but they should have completed the other side with seats, making it more marketable for concerts. It could have been a viable option besides the Pepsi Center, to bring in revenue from touring bands, therefore upping security and concessions jobs year round as well. For college hockey, in terms of seats - it's great - and probably in the upper eschelon, not withstanding The Ralph. It's also important to consider the fanbase. Denver is not a hockey town. I say that - but look just up I-25 at the Colorado Eagles.... they sell the place out. But then, remember the Rocky Mountain Rage CHL team - folded. Look at the Cutthroats... gone. It's interesting. This is Broncos country. I think most normal people (not us) view DU Hockey as just a novelty evening out. Like the Stock Show. It is what it is. Could that change? Yes. Let the AVS win another cup or two... Let DU win an NCAA hockey title or two......

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

Watching the Stanley Cup and looking for Matt Carle. Then I started to ponder the following question: of all the DU players in the NHL, who is the best? Off the top of my head these are the players in contention. Matt Carle, Paul Statsny, Joe Colborne, Chris Butler, Tyler Bozak, Patrick Weircoch, sometimes the Shore brothers. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, feel free to add any players that i have missed. So, what do we think?, who is the best current NHLer that played at DU?

Agree about the seating...but one of the best concerts I've attended was Beck at Magness...about 15 years ago during the Midnite Vultures tour. Just one big party! I went with my then-15-year-old daughter, and that night might have been the most important factor in her choosing to attend DU for both her BA and MAT. We love DU - it's just too bad that the hockey team sucks! ;)

I can say that because I know all you DU fans are way above replying with the all too obvious CC insults...

And you all are also right about those rankings...Holy Cross, Canisius, and AIC should definitely have been rated much higher. :p

I have been a little disappointed in Carle during the Finals. I think Bozak has a chance to play for quite a number of years. I will be curious to see how things play out over time with Colborne.

I agree, I think Bozak is a force!!

Congrats to Nick Shore and the rest of the Manchester Monarchs on winning the AHL's Calder Cup.

Jason Zucker and Beau Bennett are 2 other NHLers.

The Shores, Bennett and Donovan will be restricted free agents and Butler unrestricted this summer.

Congratulations, in particular, to Kevin Dineen. After his success with the Canadian Women's team in the Olympics he followed it up as an integral part of Chicago's Stanley Cup winning effort. He seems to have himself well positioned to earn another shot at an NHL head coaching job when such a spot inevitably becomes available.

Condolences, in particular, to Matt Carle. In addition to playing on the defeated squad in the Stanley Cup finals, Matt had the dubious distinction of finishing with a minus ten [-10] figure in the plus/minus category. Three hundred thirty nine [339] players--excluding goalies--appeared in at least one Stanley Cup playoff game this spring. None finished with a lower plus/minus figure than Matt. I'm guessing that will provide him with all the motivation he needs this summer to improve his play for the coming season.

2016 draft prospect Dante Fabbro also had DU and UND in his NCAA final five

Yost will wear "C" and Fabbro "A" for Penticton.
