All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Guys who made the right decision (more than a handful of NHL games)
Pettinger
Rycroft
Stastny
Butler
Carle
Bozak

Guys who made a wrong decison (a taste of the NHL or no NHL)
Dingle
Paukovich
Seabrook
Fast
Skinner

Not Sure/Too soon to tell:
Trotter

Pettinger - I wouldn't put him into that group as his leaving early was mid-season and that just shouldn't happen. It's not like he jumped to even the AHL either.

Rycroft - It took a couple of AHL seasons for him to even dress for St Louis as a 4th liner. He could have easily stayed at DU for his senior season/captaincy and probably still cracked an NHL lineup in the same timeframe.

Butler/Bozak - I can see your argument here. However, they still needed to "season" a bit. I don't know if it would have really been a detriment to them to have stayed, but they did not make a bad decision either. I will defer to your assessment. :)

I was more just referring to the 2 guys who obviously came out and immediately contributed at a high level with their prospective clubs. I have just always felt that if a player were to leave early that they be able to contribute at that high level immediately. A year (or whatever) in the AHL vs an extra year in college is not going to hinder a player's ability to be an NHL'er if they really are that good, especially with the coaching that DU has to offer. Just my opinion...:)

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Paukovich perhaps made the wrong decision in regards to giving up the practice time that college hockey provides to work on skills (especially skating skills in his case). However, he probably made the right decision in that during games with his reputation the referees would send him to the box for any hard hit, or so it seemed to me and other fans. I don't know if Paukovich would have really been better off with one more year of college hockey or not.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Sam Brittain is Canadian. Beau Bennett is an American developing in Canada.

I wouldn't read too much into the "American" angle just yet. American junior players are going to commit at a much younger age, two years or more, before stepping on campus.

Canadian kids usually commit just six months or so before coming. DU usually holds onto a scholie or two to throw at a red hot Canadian prospect.

As DU has ramped up its recruiting, there might be less need to grab Canadian prospects at the last minute. What is driving this is DU's gameplan of offering close to 18 full rides, being able to grab the best possible recruits and using recruited walk-ons to fill the roster.

The one area where this current team is better is in goal.
That's a close call between Mannino and Chevy. Hard to imagine anyone playing better than Manno did down the stretch. Chevy has the potential to do that, but he still has to prove it.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Ostrow and Weircioch nominated for WCHA players of the week.

If you haven't read it already, INCH has a nice piece about DU dated 3.5.10.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Congrats to Rhett Rakhshani for winning the WCHA scoring title and to Marc Cheverie for winning the goalie title as the best goalie in the league. Rhett Rakhshani captured the WCHA scoring title with 15-20=35 in 28 league games, while Marc Cheverie was the top goalie with a 2.05 goals against average in league play. Paul Stastny (2005-06) was the last Pioneer to win the league scoring title and Wade Dubielewicz (2001-02) was the last DU player to win the goaltending crown.

From this week's game notes

INJURY UPDATE
Chris Nutini (lower body) is doubtful for this weekend's series vs. Michigan Tech. Nutini has missed four games with the injury.

Pablo we're going to need your help to decipher the Championships again this year.

Ha ha. I'll do my best, but I'll be away from the computer & skiing on Friday.

I just looked over the DU website for a preview of the championships. A couple things jumped out: DU has not won any of the individual ski meets this year, and has finished as low as fourth. But I don't think this is a huge deal--DU has won the national title before in years when they won either none or just one meet over the course of the season. I think the coaching staff takes the approach of putting together the best team and best effort at the only time that it counts--the NCAA championships. And DU is one of 3 (?) teams to have qualified a full 12-person team, so that bodes well.

Another thing that bodes well is that we have some skiers that can finish really high in their races--Maepel in womens' XC and Haugen in mens' alpine jump out. However, we may not have the depth that some other teams have. I think there are going to be about 4 or 5 DU skiers who have never competed in the NCAA championships before, so I fear a big drop off from our elite skiers to our non-elite skiers.

We'll see what happens. GO DU, get #21!!!!

EDIT: I forgot to take into account Lindsay Cone: a transfer from St. Lawrence who won the GS NCAA championship last year. That will help!

Thanks for the info...

Maepel also won Nordic last season so that should help.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

North Dakota was really playing well and was really out for blood vs DU in that game. Most people were predicting UND would win, especially after DU had knocked out the Sioux dream team in the regional the year before. Death threats from UND-jerseyed adults were raining down on Geoff Paukovich during warmups and the pre-game atmosphere was pretty tense down on the ice. The opening minute UND hit on Skinner dislocated his shoulder and should have been a penalty, as Kris Porter (?) had a long runnup and left his skates when he tried to put Skinner straight through the end boards. Skinner had his shoulder popped back in by a doctor, was given painkillers and played the rest of the game with a separated shoulder. He knew he was probably going pro theat summer and this was his last college game. DU was on the ropes for much of the first half of the game, but began to take over the game in the second half.

The 2005 team was a little deeper than this team, especially on defense. Skinner and Carle were all-Americans. This year, we have no all-Americans on defense. Offensively, the teams are pretty similar, although I'd probably give the edge to the 2005 team, too. The one area where this current team is better is in goal.

There is no way we are better in goal now than in 2005. Regular season stats mean squat in the postseason. Manno was unstoppable and Frozen Four MOP. Even if Cheverie runs the table and we win it all again, it will be almost impossible for him to match up with what Manno did in 2005.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

News from the AHL:
Goalie: Peter Mannino ranked #4 2.14 Gaa .926 S%
Skater: Brock Trotter ranked #6 in goals and points 28-36-64
And that Seabrook kid is in the AHL this year

"Portland Pirates head coach Kevin Dineen has been suspended by the American Hockey League as it reviews his outburst at the end of a game.
Dineen became incensed when the referee waved off what would have been a game-tying goal with a second left in a 4-3 loss to Syracuse on Saturday night.
Dineen chased after the referee when the game ended, demanding an explanation of the call.
The league said Dineen has been suspended pending completion of a review of the incident."

Dineen was suspended for 1 game, March 7, and was eleigible to return on March 10.

Apparently they have no video review in the AHL. From the accounts I have read, the Pirates got screwed on this one and Dineen wasn't going to take it.

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Yep, looks like a good start to the championships, with DU finishing 2, 5 and 9 in the womens' GS, and CU not doing as well. Good job!!!

Re: All things Denver XXVI: From Boonetown to Motown

Thanks for the skiing updates and commentary. Keep 'em coming.

DU recruiting update. Its starting to look like DU is picking the perfect year to be ranked #1. DU has an enormous recruiting class to build in 2011 and it appears that the Pioneers have made some huge inroads into the USNDP.

If they've landed Dakota Mermis for 2012, other hot recruits may fall into line behind him at DU. Some are saying that Mermis may be the top American 2012 defenseman (college or OHL bound).

Now DU is working on Rocco Grimaldi the top 2011 forward in the country. DU has already landed Sam Brittian, the top 2011 North American college bound goaltender.

In the past, DU might gotten lucky and signed one of these guys. Now they might get all of them AND have other recruits say, "I want to play with those guys" (a.k.a.-The Duke effect).

Chevy is the nation's top goalie heading into the playoffs and legitimate Hobey Candidate. If Chevy can play to his capabilities in the playoffs, he'll be better than Mannino, because the rest of the DU team is not quite at 2005 levels. Chevy MUST carry DU for the Pios to have a shot at more hardware.

Chevy IS the reason this DU is in the NCAA top seed mix. Without him, we are a mid-pack WCHA team, scrambling for an NCAA berth.
