Alaska / UAA : the Strategic, Restructured, Combined 2019-20 Season Thread.

Re: Alaska / UAA : the Strategic, Restructured, Combined 2019-20 Season Thread.

Looking back on the last decade of Nanook hockey, there were some highs and some lows. First NCAA tournament appearance and winning all 10 governors cups. Along with program uncertainty and not yet having won a playoff series in the new WCHA. I have missed 2 games in Fairbanks in that time and been able to attend 20 away games. The Nanooks record in this decade is 146-183-38 including being 26-13-1 against uaa.

My Top moments
3. Winning at Penn State 4-0 the night after losing 7-0 this October. (one of the away games I attended)
2. Back to back overtime winners for Nik Yaremchuk in 2011 playoffs vs. Michigan State.
1. 6 game sweep in January 2013 at Michigan, at Notre Dame and vs. Northern Michigan.

Nanook all-decade first team:
Cody Kunyk 148 GP 60-73-133 pts.
Tyler Morley 129 GP 60-62-122 pts.
Andy Taranto 146 GP 59-61-120 pts.

Defense
Colton Parayko 104 GP 17-49-66 pts.
Zach Frye 136 GP 21-56-77 pts.

Goalie
Scott Greenham .916 save pct / 2.23 GAA
48-47-19 / 11 shutouts

Second team:
Forwards
Colton Beck 146 GP 42-59-101 pts.
Marcus Basara 140 GP 41-46-87 pts.
Nik yaremchuk 144 GP 31-48-79 pts.

Defense
Aaron Gens 140 GP 12-60-72 pts.
Michael Quinn 129 GP 9-49-58 pts.

Goalie
Cahill .906 save pct. / 2.20 GAA
21-14-3 / 3shutouts

I was about to say you need to have Chad Johnson on there somewhere, but he was the prior decade. Time flies when you’re having fun, I guess.

You need to read the * on mmf's tag line.

After a decade of awesome goaltending, we haven’t had anyone dominate consistently for awhile. Cahill’s numbers were comparable to Davis Jones, Martinsson and the first two years of John Keeney. Though he did not play as many games as someone them, he did have a .600 winning percentage.

I don’t know, but for me it is a great schedule since I travel in from the valley.

Re: Alaska / UAA : the Strategic, Restructured, Combined 2019-20 Season Thread.

It is going to be interesting to see how the Skate with the Seawolves is on Sunday after the game at 3pm. The ones after the games at the Sully were sparsely attended due to the late time after the 7pm Saturday game. This Sunday's is right after the game and the grandson is excited for it. And as an aside I do like the Saturday games starting at 5pm. I know it wasn't for my convenience but it does make it convenient. Happy new year.

Re: Alaska / UAA : the Strategic, Restructured, Combined 2019-20 Season Thread.

Please help me out.
What's that?

Meant to ask what "That's an EJ Brophy schedule." What is that?

If I remember correctly, EJ Brophy was the AD at Huntsville and they would always play second fiddle to the Havoc. That meant a lot of games at 3 PM or 5 PM for the Chargers.

I remember a trip I made to Huntsville to watch the Beavers play in the old CHA days. They played Thursday night at 7:00, couldn't play Friday night due to a NBA Development League game, and then played Saturday at 3:00 as the Havoc had to ice at 7:00.

Re: Alaska / UAA : the Strategic, Restructured, Combined 2019-20 Season Thread.

Whats an EJ Brophy schedule?

He was always willing to rearrange the schedule at the VBC to save money. Sometimes, the opponent requested the change for considerations on return travel, and that's fine. Other times, we'd play in the afternoon to let the pro team have the night schedule. That used to happen more when the pro team was partially owned by the entity that operated the arena, but that's not supposed to be the case now.

I'm glad that we now have an AD who isn't just about himself.

Re: Alaska / UAA : the Strategic, Restructured, Combined 2019-20 Season Thread.

The Nooks are on the road against a tough MSU squad. We’ve had little success against MSU, but especially on the road. The task probably got a little tougher when MSU got steam rolled by St. Cloud (2-7) and then had a less than inspired performance against a tough BSU squad (2-0). I’m sure they’re looking to start off the second half in a dominating fashion.

We’ll have to play a near error free game and get stellar goal tending if we are to steal any points. It will be important to weather the storm in the first ten minutes. We haven’t played a game in 28 days. Could be a little rusty. Just HOPE everybody is available to play.

Go Nooks!

Did I just hear correctly that UAF had only 7 shots on goal at Mankato tonight?

Yeesh.

Re: Alaska / UAA : the Strategic, Restructured, Combined 2019-20 Season Thread.

The Nooks lose 0-4 to MSU, with only 7 SOGs and with zero SOGs in the third. They skated OK for two periods but then kind of gave up physically and mentally. MSU is a better skating team, has better stick skills, but somehow we believe we and hold the puck or out finesse them. That’s a losing strategy. Against MSU we need to adopt the Bob Daniels philosophy…shoot the puck as often as you can, from anywhere you can and work hard for any rebound. Especially on the pp. What’s the point of passing until you turn it over. Take the first open shot. Quantity over quality. Our pitiful pp is not going to get an uncontested shot against MSU. Let’s go boys, bounce back tomorrow with a smarter game plan.

Go Nooks!

Might talk Suze into coming in.

Can't. Have our oldest granddaughter spending the day and night with us on Saturday (she hasn't inherited the love for hockey gene yet), and a week ago we made plans for this Sunday. :(

Very pleased with the effort tonight, and nice to see the win. Hoping for the same type of game tomorrow afternoon!
