Alaska Nanooks 2017-2018 Season

Burying the puck was a big issue to close out the season. These last eight games (all loses) the team scored 14 goals. No team is going to win scoring less than 2 goals per game on average. Perhaps if you had Patrick Roy you might have a chance. Other than that ..no. Got to be better offensively as well. Don’t even get me going on our power play.. ranked #58 out of 60. With a man advantage and still can’t score.. there are problems

Good point about the last month. I wonder if fatigue started to catch up.

Statistically, we had to score at least four goals to win a game this season. That doesn’t translate to stellar defense, hence why I thought that should be the biggest priority.

I don’t know what the deal is with the goalie situation. We have three right now. Two are sophomores and one is a freshmen but then we have another committed for the 2019 season, so I assume one of them won’t be back. We don’t play all 3 as it is, can’t imsgine having 4. If that’s even allowed?

Looks like Grigas isn’t showing up until 2019, so we should have another year of the Anton/Niko show.

That's not too encouraging. I bet both of them work with some good goalie coaches over the summer.

Anton can play. As much as anything I think it’s confidence with him right now. Minnesota State was shut out twice this year...once by St. Cloud (#1 in the Pairwise) and once by...Anton Martinsson and UAF. It’s why I maintain we have to get better on the blue line. Needing to score four goals, on average, to win a game isn’t a good way to win a lot of games.

Niko was solid in relief this year, and in his two starts came within 60 seconds of shutting out Northern Michigan and kept us in the last game against MSU until the wheels fell off halfway through the third.

It’s always easy to blame the goalies, but I think our issues this year weren’t really on them. We won 11 games this year, and averaged 4.36 goals in those 11 games. Nice number, but ideally you’d want to be able to statistically have a chance of winning at 2 or 3 goals.

Sounds like UAA's problem. We all know it wasn't with Mantha.

Mankato was the best defensive team this year allowing just a hair over 2 goals a game. Asking the Nooks to do the same is a very tall order particularly if Mankato can bearly do it.

The another ask for this year was to cut down on penalties... they lead the conference again. Tough to score never mind win if you’re killing penalties.

Zach Frye named to All-WCHA 1st Team

Steven Jandric named to All-WCHA Rookie Team

Congrats, gentlemen!

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2017-2018 Season

I wonder if the new AD at UAF is going to change the Athletics back to Alaska-Fairbanks verses just "Alaska."

I wonder if the new AD at UAA is going to make that distinction a moot point.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2017-2018 Season

No. It honors our heritage and also confuses the hell out of the Seawolves. It’s a win-win.

Not me. I prefer "Alaska" or "Alaska Nanooks." I was trying to help Dr. Gray help change ESPNU ticker to just "Alaska" from "AK-Frbnks." But, ESPNU will not change it. I do not know how to reach ESPNU to let them know that the ticker should just say "Alaska." They have us as "Alaska Anc"

So, I am with you guys. Stay just "Alaska". I would rather see UAA be Alaska State University, but that prob will never happen.

You might start with the UAA athletic department, who continues to refer to us as Alaska Fairbanks, I believe out of spite.

No, I agree. But fans at UAF should chant "U..of...A... instead of U..A..F! Just to be consistent

And your own fans do as well.

Actually we don’t refer to ourselves out of spite. The name of the university is the University of Alaska Fairbanks, or UAF. Sports teams are the Alaska Nanooks.

Much like the University of Texas at Austin refers to themselves as the Texas Longhorns or the University of California at Berkeley refers to themselves as the Cal Golden Bears.

Feel free to keep up the UA_ schtick though. It only got stale a decade ago.
