Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Tonights UAF vs Michigan game will be on fox 7 in HD, tape delayed AFTER football (around 7:30PM start time).

Not that big of a deal this season. Michigan is 6-7-0 at home this year. So much for home ice advantage. Basketball being a national power has taken hockey's spot as the #2 sport on campus and you can tell this by the attendance.

I don't care how crappy Michigan is this year, getting a sweep at Yost after a 7 game winless streak and no game action for 34 days is pretty impressive. Especially considering we haven't swept Michigan before, ever.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

A great sweep for the 'Nooks this weekend, who didn't show many signs of rust after such a long layoff. And coming into Yost and getting a sweep is impressive, regardless of how strong or weak Michigan may or may not be. While we have not had the greatest success in Yost, we have had some good success against Michigan in recent years under Ferguson. And with that long of a time to prepare for that series, I would have hoped that to be the case.

But Notre Dame will be a bigger test this coming week, although they are showing some signs of wear as of late. They also have a game Tuesday night against Bowling Green after a split with Michigan State. MSU's goalie is hot right now too, and ND did not produce any shortage of scoring chances. So we'll see how they do on a short week travelling back to South Bend.

The guys are hanging out in Grand Rapids, Michigan this week getting some practices in. I think they head to South Bend on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

Also, Kunyk and Quinn were the offensive and defensive players of the week. Both had a great series, well deserving. I'd say Keeney was close to deserving as well, but the 4 goals allowed on Friday kinda deterred voters I'm sure. Plus Hildebrand had an impressive series against ND.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

What a crazy finish! I was really impressed with how resilient the Nanooks were last night. When ND scored that first goal, they didn't quit. They took it to them, and two quick goals later, ND is chasing us the rest of the game.

But what an unreal finish to a hockey game. Just full of drama and excitement to get the game winner with just 3 seconds left on the clock! You can't make a movie any better than that! That takes me back 4 years ago when the 'Nooks played Ohio State at home in a game three to advance to the Joe, and deadlocked in a 0-0 tie when Ronnie Meyers scores with less than a minute on the clock to win it 1-0. Chad Johnson with a 50+ save shutout. My excitement was on par with that last night. Crazy!

If you don't have Direct TV or Dish, what bars in town will be showing the Sarurday game?

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

This team was dead in the water in December. There's a lot of hockey to play, but sweeping Michigan and Notre Dame is a hell of a way to start 2013.

Now that we've learned how to win, it's time to get this NMU monkey off our backs.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Nanooks were CHN's team of the week. Granberg and Morley were the offensive player and rookie of the week respectively for the CCHA.

Northern is on somewhat of the same streak we are on, including a win and a tie versus a Miami team that owned our lunch in December. Dallas has never beaten them. And he knows it. Going into this series though, I think Alaska has more momentum.

Also of interest, the year the 'Nooks made the NCAA tournament, they were 10-7-5 at this point in the season. The 'Nooks are 10-8-4 now this season.

The article that CHN wrote was great. If we can get past NMU and Miami with at least a couple more wins, the rest of our schedule sets up very nicely: Home vs. tOSU, at Lake State (always a tough trip, the travel alone for that one is a killer, as is going to NMU), and home vs. Michigan State, followed by the Anchorage series.

It's hard not to be reminded of 2010, but I am keeping my expectations grounded...that seven game winless streak, along with the atrocious loss to Canisius in October (which allows Niagara to have common opponent scoreboard in the PWR), may come back to bite us at selection time if we are still in the mix in two months. Too much hockey to be played between now and March. Need to focus on slaying the NMU monkey now; if we have some success this weekend I may start believing.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

I can get used to this whole not losing thing.

I'll be interested to see how things shake out down at Miami this next weekend. The Redhawks took our lunch money and gave us a wedgie in Fairbanks back in November, but the Nooks are playing a very different brand of hockey now. I don't think another sweep is a realistic expectation but don't be surprised if we take one of the games outright down there. Our guys are fearless on the road right now, and confidence can go a long way.

Well said and I agree. Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Our own Chad Johnson just pitched his first NHL shutout, a 4-0 win for Phoenix over Nashville. Good for him. I still remember his herculean 50ish-save shutout against OSU in the CCHA playoffs that sent the 'Nooks to Joe Lous Arena in Dallas Ferguson's first season.

Western College Hockey Blog highlighted the 'Nooks in their weekly Pairwise breakdown, basically noting that our #11 rank is somewhat precarious due to a lower RPI. Just keep winning. Alaska makes their move in latest Pairwise rankings

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Okay, HOPEFULLY just a little bump in the road. Game was a 2-1 game Friday with two empty netters scored to make final 4-1. Nanooks tied Saturday game at 2, only to give up the lead for good 90 seconds later. Keeney did not look good on the games final three goals. He gets his mulligan and will be MORE than ready for Ohio State this weekend. Nanooks need to take care of business in the final six league games and things will be good. The teams below them have wins and points to make up and if Alaska plays like they should, they will be OK
