Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Sitting here at Sully watching a thorough woodshedding by Canisius. 'Nooks look mostly uninterested and getting thoroughly out worked and pushed around by a team that has nowhere near the skill set. And Keeney is giving away way too many rebounds, although I don't think he's to blame for this nightmare.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

What a dumpster fire that game was. Not sure what's worse, the uninspired effort or getting our asses kicked by a team called the Griffins.

I'm a newbie to the NCAA hockey. I was just wondering why they don't have you in the same conference as Alaska-Anchorage?

It's a long story, but it generally has to do with some primadonnas not wanting to travel to Alaska twice in the same season (or even once, for that matter).

It's a moot point, though, as UAF and UAA will both be in the nWCHA starting next year.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Very happy with the team's performance tonight. I know the team UAF faced was missing a few people due to disciplinary reasons, but good job to hold onto the win.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

A win is a win is a win. Not our fault UND's guys partied too hard. And judging from the waxing they gave UAA last night, I don't think they were hurting too much.

Two big wins for the 'Nooks this weekend, and came from behind in both games. This certainly atones for Canisius. I'm proud of them.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Great job by the “team” tonight. Everybody worked their butt off. Not too often we see 110% all game and 120% when needed. I don’t believe I have ever seen a better all-around effort, and I have watched a lot of Nook games.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Fun fact: our last victory over a team ranked #2 or higher was a 3-0 win at #1 Miami in 2007, when Bad News Yoda was our coach.

We've taken out several top-5 teams more recently, the latest (before this weekend) being the 6-3 W over #4 Notre Dame in January 2012.

I'll will praise you forever if you stick to the commercial break schedule during the games. If you throw it to break without a scheduled break, I will send the clowns after you.

You won't like the clowns.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Wasn’t it 2006-07 when the Nooks beat three reigning #1s in one season: Minnesota, Michigan, Miami? And still lost to teams we shouldn’t have because we didn’t compete all game.

That’s what was so impressive about Saturday night’s 2-1 win over UND. It was inspiring to see the whole team work so hard all night. From the drop of the puck they played like they were down one with a minute to go. Somehow they need to take that work ethic, determination, and sense of urgency on the road to Ferris State. They have established a new standard, and hopefully, as a team, won’t settle for anything less.

Last year the Nooks lost a lot of games with untimely mistakes, even when they somewhat controlled play for much of a game. Not as bad a team as the stats indicated. The Nooks can skate. We were 1-2-1 with Ferris last year, with a 2-0 win, two one goal losses, and a 4-4 tie. We outshot them 127-99 over the four game series. But faltered when it counted.

I think we are a stronger team than last year, and I believe Ferris lost a fair amount. If the Nooks play with the sense of urgency they played with against UND, then we should have some success. If they play like they did against Canisius, it will be a long trip home.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

UAF drops game one to Ferris State 3 – 6. Come on boys, this is conference play. I thought we were only supposed to back off on hustle and work ethic enough to loss by one goal. Who miscalculated last night?

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Didn't get a chance to watch, but it sounds like we went from being Ron Burgundy to Wes Mantooth in the span of about three minutes in the 2nd. I doubt a re-building Ferris State team really has as much firepower as a team like North Dakota, even when UND is missing a third of their team.

Hell, if we'd even played 40 minutes instead of 20 we probably would have won.

I wonder if Thompson will get a chance for redemption tonight.

I can answer my own question two minutes later...Cahill is between the pipes tonight.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Nice bounce back W. It should have been 6 points instead of 3, but bottom line we did what we needed to do tonight.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2012-2013: Going Out With a Bang

Would have been nice to get 6 points, and IMHO the Nooks were a better skating club. But Ferris is a tough place to play both because of the rink and their typically hard-nosed work ethic. Usually a tough match-up, so 3 points on the first long road trip is not bad. We probably travel four or five more times this year so the freshmen need to settle into a routine or mindset that works for them, and learn to stay focused both on academics and the game plan. Doesn’t happen overnight. But real men don’t use travel as an excuse. Good job Nooks.

Go Nooks!

Five more road trips, not counting Anchorage;

@ Ohio State
@ Northern Michigan
@ Michigan/Notre Dame
@ Miami
@ Lake Superior State

NMU and LSSU are always hard just because getting to those two towns is an ordeal from Fairbanks. OSU and Miami are just flights with limited or no bus time.

Not that matters after this year, but we always seem to play at Michigan on the two-week holiday road trip.
