Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Final score 8-0. Congratulations to all three nook goaltenders for their 20 minute contributions to the shutout. Thats gotta feel good.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Can't say that was an exciting game, but it was a good all around team effort. All three goalies played and contributed to the 8-0 shutout of NAIT last night. The Nooks outshot the Ooks 42-17, and the score would have been worse without solid goaltending by Ms. Szabados, who played all sixty minutes. I only took a few pics during the 2nd period so here is what I got.

Seems like everybody was focused and anxious to make the most of their playing time. With nine freshman, there was always a mix of returnees and rookies on the ice...

I'm sure it was good to finally mix it up with someone other than your teammates...
20111001-65-L.jpg

Neither of the Nook goalies were really tested too much, but Thompson, who probably faced the toughest challenges stood his ground...
20111001-41-L.jpg

Taranto created a number of chances and ended with a three point night (1-2), as did Granberg(0-3), Gehon(2-1), and Beck (2-1)...

But Szabados didn't play poorly, she was just hung out to dry time after time...

...after time...after time....

...Chicks with sticks...ya got to love it.

Now the real fun begins...

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Overall, not a bad article penned today by Paula Weston (read it here). She notably left out some players that at least I thought were key, such as Cody Butcher and Kaare Odegard. Feel free to read my comment in the post if you wish.

In terms of impact players, I'd really like to see Chad Gehon get more involved. I really like the way that he plays the game. I don't know what it is that keeps him from scoring or out of the lineup completely, but he's got som impressive skills that I would like to see utilized more often...

Who all is going down to Anchorage for the Kendall this weekend? Count me in, I'm flying down on the noon flight on Friday...

Picked up GA tickets at Sully today. Should be some good games.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

There's a great vintage Nanooks jersey offered on ebay. Size 54 -- too big for me, or I'd buy it. Just thought I'd mention it here, in case someone else wants to bring it to its proper home. Opening bids start at $45, with a Buy It Now price of $65. (I have no connection to the seller . . . I just really like the jersey.}

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

I like the more physical and aggressive style of play we displayed this weekend, but as the St. Cloud game proved, it's a fine line between physicality and the penalty box. Pretty hard to win a game when you spend a period in the box.

That said, I thought we rebounded nicely against Clarkson. That was anybody's game going into the 3rd, and our guys stepped up and took the W.

Two tough games coming up this weekend against quality opponents. We should be well prepared going into CCHA play after this weekend.

The number of penalties that the Nanooks took really surprised me. I seem to remember a Dallas team that was very disciplined? I didn't keep track of who took the penalties, were they mainly underclassmen?

Without looking at the box score, I think it was mostly upperclassmen taking those penalties. The Clarkson game was much better from a discipline standpoint.

Against St. Cloud, those penalties along with a couple of untimely turnovers made the difference.

Thanks. It was nice to meet you and put a face with the name! The Booster room is awesome, is it not?

It was nice to meet you too! And thanks to AH for his hospitality in getting us into the booster room. I thought my blue and gold was a nice touch in that sea of green. :-)

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Solid weekend at home; it's nice to see the boys bring it both nights. We were consistently inconsistent last year, and lost a lot of points because of it. If we are to get back to the "glory" of '08-'09 and '09-'10 we need to get back in the habit of getting points out of every weekend series; top to bottom I think this looks like a solid team that is under most people's radar, much like '08-'09.

Western Michigan on tap this weekend as two years of lame-duck CCHA play begins.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Looking forward to this weekend's games. I like how aggressive this team looks.

Does anyone have any influence with the people who run the Jumbotron? It's very frustrating that they do not show replays of goals scored against the Nanooks. Do they figure that if we don't see them, they didn't happen? :rolleyes: (I realize that disputed calls cannot be shown.}

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

Disappointed that the score was so lopsided, but I'm still optimistic about these guys. Last year the effort sometimes seemed half-hearted, but I haven't had that impression with this group. Western Michigan was a formidable opponent, and the Nanooks looked good against them in the first period. Too bad things fell apart in the second.

Quite concerned about the injuries, though. Did I understand Bruce Cech to say that Maxime Dumond and Michael Hill may be out for the year? Those are two of our more touted recruits. I know that scholarships cannot be withdrawn due to injury (and rightly so}, but does the team have any recourse when their recruits can't play a single game? It just seems like a harsh blow to the organization, and one that would discourage teams from choosing players who have a history of injuries, as Hill does. (Please understand that I want Hill & Dumond on the team -- I'm just trying to understand what this means for the Nanooks.}

Meyers and Gens spoke at the post-game press conference, and both were clearly banged up.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

I forget the exact term, but the NCAA basically allows players to redshirt a year in the case of an extensive injury that happens early enough in a season that the player misses most or all of the season.

I was more disappointed in our second period play than anything else. Need to rebound tonight for a full 60 minutes.

One other note, this is most definitely not the Western Michigan of old that was almost a guaranteed four to six points at home.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2011-12 Season Thread - The Long Goodbye.

I thought we got taken to the woodshed last night. Western was a better team most of the night. We were out-worked, out muscled, and just out-played. Western was fast, strong, and in-sync. We weren't. It will take a total team gut check to turn that around tonight.

Their pressure disrupted our passing lanes all night, and even without pressure our passing was terrible, seldom tape to tape. We made bad decisions and failed to clear in critical situations. I was surprised how often we missed our checks along the boards. And even though Coach said it was addressed in practice, as a team we are too cute with the puck, in both the defensive and offensive zones. It just stays on the tape too long, generally with disappointing results.

It did seem like the refs started out calling really weak stuff. Faceoff interference?, like when doesn't that happen? Offsetting too many men on the ice? But they settled down. The major was an easy and good call. Stupid penalty.

We just got a taste of what it's like playing a tough CCHA foe. Better step up and adjust or it's going to be a long season. No reason we can't turn the tables, but our injury situation won't make it easy. But nobody said it would or should be easy.

Go Nooks!

I remember that this happened with Jordan Hendry, but I still don't know what it means in terms of scholarships. That the Nanooks give a player a scholarship for 5 consecutive years, but he plays for 4? That means, basically, that the team is short a scholarship one year. (Used on an inactive player; unavailable for an active player.} If this happens with both Hill and Dumond, we'd be "losing" 2 in a year -- assuming they're on full scholarships, and I have no idea whether that's the case.

In fairness, you could just as easily "waste" a scholarship by giving it to a player who turns out to be a bust -- but I'd think that if there are doubts about a player's capability, he wouldn't be offered a full scholarship anyway. (I realize that scholarships are offered on a one-year basis, and are sometimes amended when renewed.}

Am I missing something? Again -- this is not meant to be negative toward our injured players. I hope they recover quickly and become stars!

Well...one measly point out of a possible six at home ain't gonna cut the mustard.

That said, I liked the comeback in the 3rd.

But if they compete in all their games like they did tonight then they will win their fair share. Their effort deserved a better fate. Unfortunately, fate was wearing a striped shirt.
