Re: Alaska Anchorage Vs Denver Jan 21-22

Traditionally a tough series and don't expect anything less than that this weekend.

DU's team has shown strong character and resilience. Now we need to come out strong in the 1st period and keep it up! Pios play 60 minutes with the same intensity they've shown in the 3rd.

Ummm, what Viz said, except insert UAA for DU. ;)

Puck Swami said:
The Pioneers have been playing with fire lately, with bad starts and mediocre goaltending being bailed out by superb third period drive and production to win games late. I don't think that pattern can continue for DU to be successful.

All that said, UAA is playing great hockey right now, and I think the DU's 6 game undefeated streak is likely coming to an end this weekend. I think a split is likely.

Curious if the recent pattern of Denver pitch-poling against UAA will continue. Always a pleasure to see Cap’n Swami having to reassuring the lubbers of the ultimate stability and condition of the pumps on the scow with the manically grinning Booney under the bowsprit.

The last of the 3rd period and OT of the 2nd 2009 game in Denver and the 7-3 swamping in Anchorage last year float to the surface of my memory. I thought that UAA played a rather poor 3rd period on Friday this December in DU’s comeback in Anchorage, as their passing and puck handling markedly deteriorated. The Pio’s can make others pay. Much of the rest of the series seemed rather even, up to the end of Saturday’s game when the ice started listing towards Denver’s blue line a bit, and continued sinking through the OT that was played in DU’s end, where a net coming off as the wolves found twine salvaged a point for the coonskin capped crew.

CC started last week with a very aggressive PK against the ’Wolves, and got burned 4 straight times. They backed-off a bit and were more successful. Almost all teams have tried to double man and chase the puck against Anchorage with good success for years. This last December, Denver was the exception and UAA converted on 2 of 6 in a series where neither team spent much time in the brig. Special teams and net minding have been UAA’s ship worms for a good stretch of years (special teams since shortly after Noah was a sailor).

Like all teams the deal is to play 60 or 65 solid minutes, and UAA is upping their percentage this season, although they are still subject to lapses. They’re usually not going to score by the boatload when their opposition plays a period or game like they've just had a double grog issue, but need to continue to repel boarders, keep the shot totals even and few, and hope Gunderson maintains his watch on the net.

Re: Alaska Anchorage Vs Denver Jan 21-22

From MIke Chambers in this morning's Denver Post.

Two alarming injuries took place in the first half of the game. Seawolves freshman wing Andrew Pickering took a slap shot off the side of the head, presumably his left ear, and was carted off the ice.

Freshman Jason Zucker, who leads DU with 16 goals, missed most of the first period and some of the second after taking a shot off a leg. It was initially feared he had fractured a bone.

I hope PIckering is ok. According to Jay on the DU radio side, Pickering has an ear contusion, needed a lot of stitches and has a concussion.

What you might have missed

After being ejected for checking from behind, UAA senior Tommy Grant tried to spear DU's Dustin Jackson while skating from the penalty box to the visitor's exit late in the first period.

Not a smart move by UAA's best player. Will be interesting to see if the league takes any action for the attempted spear.

They should also investigate into why UAA shoots the puck so hard that it hurt Zucker's leg. Maybe they should also take action against players who shoot pucks at players blocking shots. I wonder if Gwoz beefed to Ol' Shep about these during dinner after the game.:D

Zucker was hit by a puck by his own teammate, Matt Donovan, who happens to have one of the hardest shots in the league. If UAA could shoot the puck hard they might score some goals. DU sweeps tonight. ;):D

Re: Alaska Anchorage Vs Denver Jan 21-22

UAA has made a huge leap as a program. They were big and strong last year, but they've added more speed, more discipline and much better goaltending to go with size and strength. DU has real matchup issues with UAA, and will need to be much better at puck management if they hope to sweep. The Pioneers need to keep moving feet, and get more traffic in front of Gunderson. For UAA, I expect them to keep banging down low and get more garbage goals - they have the size to do it, and DU needs to adjust to it.

LOL. I'm sure Chambers got that info from Gwoz, and we all know how truthful he is.

Puck Swami, you are the polar opposite of another DU fan on here.. *coughdu78cough*

In other words, you kinda rock! :o

Next time I go to an Alaska Aces game, I'll cheer on Ruegsegger for you! :)

Gwoz is 100% truthful. He just chooses to be exceedingly selective about what truth he's willing to share with the rest of us. :)

:D UAA is 11th in the league in scoring at barely over 2 goals per game and is giving up almost 3 per game. Not a formula for success. Scoring is UAA's biggest problem. Gunderson is doing everything but the scoring. The team is big and physical but can't finish around the net. I would think Shyiak would be recruiting some scorers for next season. That was also a dumb play by Grant last night to take a penalty, whether it was major or not, with 5 seconds left in a period.

Shyiak has recruited some big scorers for next season.
