Air Force Hockey 2009-2010 Season Thread

Re: Air Force Hockey 2009-2010 Season Thread

The way it was described around RIT is that RIT, AFA, and Rob Mo all applied to the AHA at the same time. And the AHA chose RIT and AFA. Then Rob Mo ended up in the CHA instead. I don't think the AHA went on a hunting trip!;)

Actually, RMU was set to enter the AHA until Findlay dropped their program. RMU was then asked to fill their spot in the CHA and allow them to keep their auto-bid.

RMU would have been in the AHA had Findlay not dropped their program.

Interesting. I obviously have no knowledge of what went on at RMU, but the timing of everything is such that RMU was being convinced to join CHA at almost exactly the same time RIT and AFA were applying to join AHA. I wonder if RIT was ever nudged toward CHA ... which probably wouldn't have flown with us due to our inability to give any athletic scholarships. I've never heard any RIT-CHA connection though. Ah well, that's all history now.

Re: Air Force Hockey 2009-2010 Season Thread

What a rough weekend it was. I think our biggest problem was the defense. While we outshot them both nights, our defense gave up too many quality shots and shots that should have never been available in the first place. Our defense played way too soft.

I'll be at both games next week as well...hopefully the new jersey's will be in stock by then...if not, they may not sell a lot this year. LOL

Seriously though, I think we'll improve quite a bit. Personally, I think Sellers and Fairchild didn't play up to their potential because of their injuries. Hopefully this weekend shook off the rust...we'll see.

Re: Air Force Hockey 2009-2010 Season Thread

Interesting game note: After introducing 5 Chargers from Ontario, the crowd erupted when it was announced that the sixth starter was from Georgia. (presumably NOT the former Soviet republic) Falcon fans still have some issues with xenophobia.
Let's get them tomorrow.
GO FALCONS!!!

I was part of that as well...it was hilarious. I thought it was funny that as each player was introduced, you could hear "Go Candada" louder until the last announcement from Georgia...everyone lost it and applauded.

The guys in front of us were UAB fans and didn't know what to say. At least the fans have the Alabama accent! :D

Despite being from Georgia, Ruffini adopts a northern accent. It cracks me up. He's from Atlanta.

The Falcons finally scratch the win column with a hard-fought 5-4 victory.
The defense wasn't much better but the offense finally came alive with four goals in the 2nd, and a late game-winner.

Good point by Frank on the post-game. As good as Air Force has been the last few years, they've NEVER swept RIT. This group has a chance to do something even the NCAA tournament teams haven't done. Let's hope they take care of business tomorrow night. This new group is very good, (start the red?) but they need to work on their singing.

Re: Air Force Hockey 2009-2010 Season Thread

I think the big thing for AFA early on is to just play well enough to not kill themselves. They have some young players and it will take some time for this team to come together. But we know the work ethic of the Air Force players, not to mention the great coaching of Frank Serratore. There is no question that this team will get better and better as they go.

I'm looking forward to their first trip back east so I can see them in person.

S-W-E-E-P!!!!

Air Force scores the game-winner with no time left in OT!

Nice weekend, and way to get the ship righted. once again, the 4th line led the way with goals from Kruse and Durham. That OT goal may be huge at the end of the season!
Nice start to conference play. Let's keep up the momentum on the road!

Congrats to AFA. Sounds like it was a good game (at least until the end).
That was the first sweep of RIT by an AHA team.

And ... technically, there is no such thing as a goal with no time left!!!;) :p

See you in Rochester come February. Maybe it will be our turn for a sweep then???

Re: Air Force Hockey 2009-2010 Season Thread

Officially with .3 seconds. I rounded down.;) I need to see a replay though.
I would still have been happy with a 3 pt. weekend.

Re: Air Force Hockey 2009-2010 Season Thread

Congrats on the sweep.

I'm very curious as to how blatent McReynolds' penalty must have been in overtime to call it from someone who was there know how officials generally put the whistles away at that time. I would hate to think that the officials determined the outcome of a well played game like yesterday's was by putting a team down without a blatent penalty.

Good question. I was at the game and can tell you that it was very blatant.

Air Force was putting pressure on and while getting ready for a centering pass, an Air Force player (can't remember who) got crosschecked from behind...with nobody around them, so it was very obvious and it definately affected the developing play. The replay showed it a couple of times (we had RIT fans near us) and even the RIT fans who were near us agreed.

Overall a great game to watch for any fan. RIT definately controlled the puck more and had more shots (especially quality shots), but came up short. Both AF and RIT should have a great season ahead.

How 'bout the Air Force freshman this weekend??? Unbelievable!

Kruse looked unstoppable...and De Laurell, Durham, and Carew played extremely well.

Kruse's weekend: 1 goal and 5 assists!

Thanks. It's good to know that the RIT fans there agrees that it was obvious and should have been called. Like I said, I would hate to have a good game like that decided by the generally incompetant AHA refs.

Nice win for the Falcons tonight. It sounds like the defense is getting a little better, and goaltending has gotten a LOT better. Nice to see Volks back in form. Still need some production, especially out of the top 2 lines. Only one Falcon in the top 25 in scoring.
Still, 4 pts. at home and at least 2 on the road will put you in a good place come tournament time.

Re: Air Force Hockey 2009-2010 Season Thread

I finally had a chance to see the boys in person this year, so I'm quite happy about the win. Volks was looking like he did last year, which I thought to be very encouraging after a bit of a rough start to the season. For a good portion of the game, Holy Cross did a great job of forcing the Falcons into a dump and chase style of tonight, thus eliminating their transition game and their speed. For the time Holy Cross was able to do this, they really dominated the game in both puck control and time in their offensive zone. However, at roughly 6 or 7 minutes into the third, the Falcons looked as if they flipped a switch. They began to dominate puck possession, they were getting some good chances, and they were able to use their speed. Matt Fairchild's goal was a work of art. He took the puck near center ice, skated around a defender as if the guy was standing still, and flipped a gorgeous backhander into the net. Absolutely beautiful goal! Also, AFA killed a Crusaders' 6 on 4 attack for about the last minute and a half, including a GREAT save by Volkening right at the buzzer. I do not know whether or not the shot would have counted if it had gone in, but it was a great save in any case. All in all a good night of hockey. Looking forward to another trip to Worcester tomorrow night and hopefully a conference road sweep!

Larry's goal sounds a lot like the play that set up Lamoreaux against Michigan. Can't wait to see the video. His speed is lethal, especially when teams start to get tired in the 3rd.

Have a good trip to Worcester. Springs is about to get slammed with snow.

Looking forward to night #2! We have a nasty nor'easter here right now...we're getting slammed with rain, but no snow, at least.
