Advice

A Mini Rooster and a Mini Hen
Looking at getting new a washer and dryer and I'm wondering if anyone knows of good brands, where to look, and where I can find reviews? Thanks in advance!

Re: Advice

My 2 cents: About 5 years ago I bought a new GE washer & dryer (higher middle end set). I absolutely hate them. Most of the time the dryer never completely dries the clothes (even when 'dry damp' is not selected) and the minute counter on the washer is a joke. A 42 minute cycle (according to the counter) takes 54 minutes in actual time.

Re: Advice

Got Bosch front load washer and matching dryer about 6 years ago. No issues, still look and operate like new. I'd suggest spending a little more and getting a good set. We went through local appliance store to ensure installation and repair would be done by somebody who had done more than sit in a 1 hour class. We've needed repair for dishwasher bought at same time, not bosch, and have been glad we went with a place than can send a trained tech over the same or next day.

Is there a sensor on the inside of the machine, near the door? My Maytag dryer does the same, and I talked to my brother about it who knows a great deal about appliances and I also read some stuff from Maytag on it too. It turns out that the initial number is what a "standard" load should take, but the load may take more or less time, depending upon the reading from the sensor inside the machine - measuring static resistance, if I remember correctly. That way your clothes never come out wet.

My family and now I alone have always had Kenmore. Never a prob.

You have to be careful with Kenmore. For a while now they've contracted out their construction. Some of their stuff is made by Maytag and Whirlpool (good) while some of it's made by Frigidaire (bad).

Consumer Reports just a few months ago did a review of washers and dryers. They said that as a general rule to stay away from the front load washers. While they're more efficient with the water, they don't do as good of a job getting things clean.

As for mine, I have a front load Maytag Neptune bought in 2005. The dryer is all right, but the I don't like the washer. It leaves these small marks on my clothes from time to time, I don't know if they're oil of some sort of just not getting all the detergent rinsed out of them.

Re: Advice

About four or five years ago, my wife and I bought a set of Whirlpool Cabrios. The washer is high efficiency, although it is a top loader. We've never had a problem with either, and really love how well they work.

Re: Advice

Would echo staying away from front loader, High efficiency. I always use the extra rinse and always have soap foam at the end of spin- even tho I use less than recommended soap and use the extra rinse feature. Also there seems to be a commone complaint of mildew smell if you leave the washe door closed. Even tho I leave mine open after use if I leave a load in for more than a few hours they come out smelling like mildew. I have used bleach, vinegar etc to get rid of it to no avail.

Mine will tell me 1 minute left for a few minutes= I hate that. Stand there thinking it will be done seemingly forever.

Re: Advice

They installed front loading machines in the condo where I live two or three years ago. I hate them for a reason no one has mentioned yet -- I get back pains whenever I bend down to put in or take out clothing. This probably could be alleviated if the machines were raised.

Re: Advice

I have Whirlpool and I've been happy for the short time I've had them. I've always had problems with dryers not getting my clothes all dry, but with this one they always come out perfectly dry. It has some smart moisture sensor thing in it, so it just runs until, I'm guessing, the humidity gets to a certain point, then it knows the clothes are dry.

Re: Advice

Lowe's, Home Depot, Sears, Best Buy, regional big-box chains e.g. Menard's, local appliance stores and chains

Consumer Reports

I honestly don't recall the outcome on this...it has been said that the big box stores (blue and orange) sell products that are slightly less capable than their competitors (they'll source a drill at a different factory and put a slightly less powerful motor in the same casing) so HD or L can sell the 'same' model at a lower price. The 'evidence' is that the model numbers are similar but the L/HD models always have a dash and one more number or letter to signify the difference, however obscure that may be to the consumer.

Sounds like either the truth or a complete lie made up by their competitors. If true, do they do the same things with appliances?

I can't imagine a company like DeWalt or Milwaukee would want to stake their reputation on something like that...

I hear you...the commentary (I just googled it) is that if they don't do it then HD/L/Walmart doesn't sell their products at all. There is nothing unethical about selling differing quality products, the issue is that the price shopper can make a bad comparison, thinking the same drill costs less at HD/L when the products (with nearly identical model no.s) are not the same. Sounds believable knowing the competitiveness of the retail world and some claim that it is absolutley the case while offering their experience as employees of those chains. It is completely legal as long as the model numbers vary slightly. Many responses go to the weekend fix it guy looking for lesser quality than the top of the line...that isn't really a problem in my mind...only an issue if he thinks he got a bargain because he got the same drill at a lower price.

It's definitely true with Walmart, partly to lower costs and partly to avoid matching coupons (sure we honor others' coupons, but this is a different model).

I've not heard the same thing regarding anyone other than Walmart, though it wouldn't shock me.

I have heard the same regarding electronics at Walmart and Best Buy. They use their volume to bully manufacturers into producing lower priced (and quality) products with similar, but different, model numbers and nearly identical appearances.

I didn't see that happening when I was doing some appliance shopping around this time last year. It's not always easy to find direct comparisons because none of the stores carries a comprehensive selection, but in multiple instances I was able to find an identical model at two different outlets.

Re: Advice

Go to consumerreports.org, spend the $6 for a one month subscription (or go to your local library for the dead tree versions). Then buy their "Consumer Reports Best Buy".

I bought my TV at Best Buy just over a year ago. They had the same exact model as Ultimate Electronics. I had written down the info just to make sure. I turns out that BB was actually a slightly better deal from the start. I was as a surprised as anyone.

Re: Advice

My wife and I have all LG appliances in the house, including the front loader washer and dryer. You do need to get the pedestals with them, but they're only around 60/each. Now, since I don't do laundry, I couldn't tell you how well they actually work, but I do know that my wife puts a crap ton of clothes in there, and the dryer works well enough where everything is dry after one time through.
