Adrian 2011-12: The Next Generation

Re: Adrian 2011-12: The Next Generation

Eh, get some sleep on Thursday and you're fine. :p

Thank you for the consideration, but we've got some work to do on our end before we even entertain such a notion.

Re: Adrian 2011-12: The Next Generation

AC Men may or may not win the MCHA. Victory in the conference does not give me a lot of hope for good things like last season. They did not show me much out of conference this season and this worries me. The MCHA is a very weak conference this season outside MSOE.
Go Bulldogs and give us a 5th straight Harris Cup Title and keep working hard in the NCAA's:)

This reminds me of an old Italian proverb:When the game is over the King and the pawn go into the same box.:)

Re: Adrian 2011-12: The Next Generation

Four Adrian players were named to the All-MCHA team this evening: Zach Graham, Josh Cousineau, Chris Stansik, and Scott Shackell. Zach Graham was named MCHA player of the year.

I said a couple weeks ago that the hard part now begins. Here we are. The benefits of the regular season crown? The #1 seed in the MCHA tournament, a week off to rest and recover from any nagging injuries, and the last line change this weekend. That's it. Nothing more. The fact that this weekend's tournament is in Adrian was provided to you by a team from the past. That team is no longer here to provide any further help. It is up to you to take advantage of the opportunity in front of you. As for the four players above, it's time to validate those honors that you received tonight. It's time for the rest of the team to follow suit.

It's your move. See you tomorrow.

Re: Adrian 2011-12: The Next Generation

Adrian. They are the higher seeded team in their respective region which means they get to host in any inter-regional games.

And if Elmira was so fortunate to win that game, they'd be right back on a bus to Oswego on Friday for the NCAA Quarterfinals after getting back to Elmira at what 6 am on Thursday?

I would think they would just go straight to Oswego and bypass Elmira. More time to catch up on sleep.

Re: Adrian 2011-12: The Next Generation

Adrian-MSOE for the Harris Cup, and the ensuing Pool A.

Sooner or later we were going to have to deal with MSOE. Here it is. This is the final exam. For the second straight year we've got to go through the only team to put a dent in our conference record. And it was one helluva dent. The last time we saw these guys they administered a 6-1 ***-kicking. If that doesn't get our attention, well, we're not going to the NCAA tournament. Simple as that. This championship can easily be lost if we play that poorly again. But it can also be won, too.....

Sleep well. And we'll do it again tomorrow.

Re: Adrian 2011-12: The Next Generation

This is going to be a 2-part post. I don't know if I'll cover everything (or anything, for that matter), but here goes anyway.

It's over.

MSOE beats Adrian 4-3 in overtime to take the Pool A and end Adrian's season. It was a good game, and a pair of nice comebacks, but not enough. We were in real trouble not 5 minutes into the game as MSOE banged in 2 quick goals before we tied it after 2. The 3rd goal was off of a nice tip by one of the Keizers (go figure), and then the OT goal was, well, an OT goal. Overtime goals generally aren't pretty, and once you realize that, it makes things much easier to deal with.

We didn't get screwed. We didn't play poorly. We just got beat. I wondered privately whether this was just MSOE's year, but I never said anything except to one person, and not much at that. Turns out that it is.

Adrian has nothing to apologize for. Like I said, we played well and got beat. It happens. As a matter of fact, sooner or later this was going to have to happen for this league to grow. It sucks from my perspective, but it doesn't make that statement any less true. We got our shot. We didn't take full advantage of our opportunity to get into the NCAA tournament.

Show's over. And what a show it was...

Okay, here is Part 2. And this one is going to be on a personal note.

Five years ago, I got to witness the beginning of a hockey program from up close. Very few people have been able to do this at any level, and if you are one of the lucky ones, you know that your vantage point is radically different from those who just show up, eat nachos and cheer. You get to know players, and sometimes players' families. I have been lucky enough to meet so many people, and it really made this experience special, even though I've been following college hockey quite closely for 20 years now.

Last year's senior class was a very special group of guys. That was a unique group, and something like that will never happen again. But there was one player who didn't get to experience the run first-hand. Chris Stansik was unable to play last year due to an injury that cost him his chance to experience what the other players in his class were able to. So he returned, and played his *** off this year.

I had one wish for this season. I wanted to see Chris get another chance, another taste of the NCAA tournament. Obviously, that's not going to happen. That's what makes this one tougher for me. I have no problem with MSOE winning the Harris Cup in the manner it happened. But after seeing what Chris went through to get back to playing again this year, I just wish we could have given him the opportunity for one more shot.

Thank you, Chris. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you play here at Adrian. We'll miss you.

Hammer:

Understand your disappointment but the sting will go away as recruits start so sign for next year. Only one team goes away happy every year. Congrats to the Bulldogs and the Raiders for very good seasons. My opinion is that Adrian has forced the remaining teams in the MCHA to get better and in the end that is really what you want. This is why I get so irritated with the whole NCHA/WIAC issue as SNC has forced the other teams to get better and they have causing a great NCHA league that anyone could have won this year.

Thank you for your kind words.

Once Adrian joined the MCHA, two things happened. 1) The poundings they administered forced teams to raise their own games or face getting steam-rolled for the foreseeable future, and 2) That made 7 D-III teams, allowing the league to qualify for the Pool A. That's one incredible tool for recruiting that the league did not have in the past.

As for the NCHA/WIAC fiasco, I think I've made it pretty clear that I don't like what is happening one bit.

I think a lot of people misunderstood what the Adrian contingent was clamoring for when this program first started. Now, maybe the message we were sending wasn't the clearest, but here it was: I don't think we were claiming to be the best team in D-III. At least I hope not. What we DID want was the opportunity to show whether we belonged or not. Meaning, the NCAA tournament. Even now, knowing what I know now, I would have loved to have seen what that 2008-2009 team would have done had we got in, but that's ancient history, and not something that needs to be discussed tonight. Outside of this thread, tonight is about the teams that are playing in this year's NCAA tournament.

Now we have a way into that tournament. This year, we did not take advantage of our way in. That's why things are the way they are this evening.

Re: Adrian 2011-12: The Next Generation

I know it must sting for the Adrian faithful. The downside of having such a strong program is that you have forced everyone else in the conference to get better. Four years ago we would not have witnessed three, one goal Harris Cup games.

The games were as entertaining as they were close.

Before Adrian the MCHA was at par with Northeast-10 - and with just about the same practical recruiting "strengths" and chance of getting into the Championships - ALL of DIII owes Adrian (and Dr. Robyn Arrington Jr. and his brother Col. Harold Arrington) a great deal of thanks, Adrian has made a significant contribution DIII hockey - at time when many were/are looking to cut their expenses. :)
