Sounds like this will be my summer trip...

Wednesday, June 23, drive from St. Paul, MN, to Milwaukee, WI, for the Twins/Brewers game.
Thursday, June 24, fly from Milwaukee to Philadelphia, meet my buddy there, drive to Atlantic City.
Spend Friday, June 25-27 around NYC for the Twins/Mets game.
June 28, fly from Philadelphia back to Milwaukee and drive back to St. Paul, MN.

Bellagio fountains. At night, they are gorgeous.

Venetian/Bellagio/(I hear) Wynn. Beautiful beautiful casinos. Just walk around, maybe play a table or two, but everything about them is awesome.

Take in a "lounge" show at one of the nicer casinos (like the ones mentioned above). These aren't your Wayne Newton/cheesy shows. It's usually a cover band, but it's nice and relaxing.

Have no plan. You walk by a place you want to check out? Check it out. We found a couple nice clubs/places to eat because of it. One of my faves was Rumjungle. Trapeze artists were flying over the dance floor, and they have a HUGE wall of rum. Huge.

Word of note: places don't really get hopping until at least midnight. At least. Adjust your schedule.

For good food in an old-world Vegas showman type atmosphere I like Hugo's Cellar in the Four Queens casino. Get the salad to go with your steak.

You could cut it with a straw, I swear.

I did sample another buddy's selection of the buffet, and I can't say that was anything of less quality.

In fact, that was also the night we smoked fine cigars by the Bellagio Fountains, got a front'n'center table at their lounge (I'll just say we made sure we got that table, I think you all can take it from there), and it ended up being a "Hangover" sort of night. :D

(check out the changing sky in the shopping mall) the giant aquarium behind the Mirage check in is cool. sportsbooks are usually fun to see the "local" action. great place to have a drink and watch the events on TV. a drive or walk down the strip after dark is a must.

It's amazing - beautiful, isolated, a totally different experience from typical Vegas, and only about 20 minutes from the big casinos on Las Vegas Blvd. The park at Red Rock has a variety of hikes ranging from easy 2-mile round trips designed for families with kids to moderate 5-10 milers to difficult hikes with intense elevation changes. If you stick with the easy ones you don't even need hiking shoes, although comfortable walking shoes/sneakers are still recommended.

agree. and a visit to Hoover Dam is pretty cool. we did the "hard hat" tour where you actually went into the dam and could look out the face of it and see the river below. Downtown is something else to do. Laser light show. gives you a look at the seed side. our favorite breakfast is at the Egg and I on Sahara (you'll need a car) - not unusual to see some Elvis impersonators in there.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! Already finalized plans to stay at Mandalay Bay from September 4-10, and I can't wait...

Been to all of them.

Malaga: Interesting port city of 600,000 with some stuff worth seeing - Cathedral, Roman theatre and bullring are all cool.

Piraeus is the port city and a suburb of Athens. Take the light rail 20 minutes from the port into in Athens and enjoy Athens, an amazing city. The Acropolis and other ruins around town are terific.

Valetta is a very atmospheric city that you can do in a day or two. Lots of small museums, and the governors palace is worth seeing.

Dublin is a great town for drinking. Can't go wrong there.

Brest is a port city . Check out the cool old castle and the medieval tower with it's museum of WWII.

Like Swami Said. Piraeus is Athens. It's worth a couple days. :rolleyes: :D

Dublin is OK. Does Guinness still do tours?

One option for Malaga: Granada is about 60 miles away. And it is spectacular.

Where from, Grand Rapids?

Bring some snacks and liquids, the cafe is alright but sort of expensive. The seats might be a bit close together for tall people too, so see if you can snag an aisle seat for legroom, or a seat facing another pair. If you feel like it, I think this train has business class with more legroom and width, for a fairly small up-charge. There's two outlets per seat pair if you have electronics to bring.

At Chicago Union Station, the signage ought to be pretty clear to find Amtrak, but the station itself is a bit of a maze. Take note of where things are when you enter the station, especially if you need to buy a return ticket at the station. When you get onto the street, you're not on an elevated line, but downtown is immediately across the river so you shouldn't have any issues.

Already booked tickets; $54 round trip is much cheaper than two tanks of gas...

Actually, going out of Holland, leaving at 8:33 AM. Thanks for the advice; sounds like if I bring a good book and my iPod along with a small snack, I should be fine.

As for my Vegas trip, my friend and I are trying to decide between New York New York or Mandalay Bay. Sounds like we can get a better deal if we stay at New York New York...

Not really. You can take a tour of the museum building, and end in the pub for a couple of pints, but no tour of the brewery.
Same with Jameson's - they moved the distillery out of Dublin a while back and all that's left is a museum. But, you get a couple of shots of Whiskey at the end!

Go to Trinity college and see the Book of Kells. It's pretty neat.

If in Salt Lake City, do yourself a favor and stay in the Grand America hotel. It ain't cheap but it is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. The website doesn't do justice to the hotel, nor the views.

Anyone familiar with northeast Texas? I'm going to a wedding near Dallas in late June and I've spent SOME time out there with family but I've never really done much traveling outside of the area. Looking for any scenic places within a few hours of dallas (actually waxahachie, where my cousin lives) that might be a good day trip for some good photo ops... any ideas?

When I went, they asked for volunteers at the end of the tour, and I wish I had raised my hand. The 4 volunteers each got to sample various kinds of whiskey and each received a small bottle of their favorite.
