5 dollar gas...are we ready?

Re: 5 dollar gas...are we ready?

After a month of 4.55 in the suburbs, gas priced finally fell yesterday and today. Gas stations near me are anywhere from 4.07 to 4.39. Not sure what downtown is.

It was surprising to see downtown metro Detroit was .50 cheaper than the suburbs of Chicago when I was in town last weekend. Glad to see it being reasonable again.

Re: 5 dollar gas...are we ready?

How the heck did Syracuse become more?! Or is that just your lowest price? We still have a couple under 4 bucks.

I saw one station at $4.07 and another at $4.03 and a couple more in between while I was running errands yesterday.

Just curious, but since when is $3.90 gas "reasonable"?
Since it quit jumping $.20 per day for a week straight. :P

Having stable prices is "reasonable," Having them jump like they did in February and March was nuts.

Ah, OK, that's what you "mean". :p

I believe the lowest non-reservation price still belongs to Rochester (as the Senecas do about 30 cents less than anyone else). In NYS, that is.

But if we're going to be "happy" with $3.90 gas because it's not $4.50, then pretty soon we'll get $4.99. It's the gas equivalent of "bracket creep".

Re: 5 dollar gas...are we ready?

At least the crack spread is being addressed. Down to $17, with negotiations going on to get the prices closer.

Re: 5 dollar gas...are we ready?

I think the best thing for oil prices might just be continued economic recovery.

Sure - economic recovery might drive up demand for consumption of refined products (gas) in the U.S. But with economic instability, we've seen a number of commodity prices explode: gold, corn, oil. Demand for oil as a financial instrument is not the same as demand for oil consumption.

Thankfully. Because demand for petroleum consumption isn't going away any time soon. In 2000, 17m cars were sold in the U.S., compared to 1m in China. In the lousy auto market of 2010, sales in the US sank to 11.5m. China? 17m. In other words, the fine print in Gingrich's plan to return gas prices to $2/gallon probably involved nuking Guangdong.

They may nuke themselves before then.

Given that they are now letting wages rise, and all those people with cars are going to want more and more freedom, the Party is going to reach a point where they need to literally cash in and move on.

I guess I'm not sure I buy that. IMHO, the only thing keeping gas as low as it is right now is the instability and potential slowdown in a W-shaped "recovery".

Re: 5 dollar gas...are we ready?

I think there is some price fixing going on in the Chicagoland region. Last weekend, the prices dropped to about $4.19 across the area near my apartment. Three gas stations about 10 miles away dropped to $3.84 Monday afternoon. Monday night, they were up to $3.99 while every other gas station in the area went somewhere in the range of $4.09 to $4.19.

Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, the three gas stations again drop to 3.84... while no other stations drop (even the one near the house that claims to have the "lowest gas prices in a 2 mile radius." (Yes, I know the other stations are outside the radius, but this place usually falls first).

Nope, all of the stations hold fast with $4.09 as the lowest, and the three gas stations were at the same $4.09 Yesterday and today.

Summer gas in IL is always going to be screwy because they use a specific blend that is for their state only so you can't just take from excess supply elsewhere. Basically what you're going to have is people protecting their supply leading to higher prices.

In the Twin Cites the highest priced day of the week is Monday. It started with the Tuesday coupon cycle and doubling and/or accepting certain offers. So the Holidays or Superamericas started jacking up prices on Monday to counteract the coupons. It seems to have stuck.

Mondays and Fridays (especially in summer) are the highest priced (think: weekends to the cabin and such, so you need to either gas up or refill) from what I've seen.

Thursdays are usually the lowest.

That being said, what gets me is the difference in prices within 7 miles (if that; I have sorta kept track with my odometer). The station by my place is usually 5-10 cents higher than the stations by my work (same franchise/big name, I guess you could say). I've seen a 15 cent difference once in a while. That's a big difference when you're talking gas prices and how volatile they are. And it's not like any of the stations are in bad neighborhoods (Plymouth and Minnetonka).

How do the prices compare between the 2 stations by where you live? I really think that the local price depends a lot on the level of local competition.

The BP and Holiday? They are the same.

The Holiday off of Carlson Parkway/494 (5 miles north from me) is usually 5-10 cents cheaper than the one by my place, and the Holiday on Hwy 55/Vinewood (about a block east of 494, 2 miles north of the Carlson station) usually runs about 7-12 cents cheaper. The latter two are both in Plymouth, while the one by me is in Minnetonka.

Re: 5 dollar gas...are we ready?

Of course they're the same. Competition in gas stations across the street from each other is goofy. If one lowers the price, the other will lower it within a day. If one jacks up the price, you can be ****ed sure the other one will raise prices.

Yeah, I know. Dunno why Almsy would think otherwise.

Re: 5 dollar gas...are we ready?

The worst part is, that people think saving $0.03 a gallon actually matters.

Say you have a 20-gallon tank. Say you fill up once a week, every week. A three cent difference nets you $31.20 annually. Hardly worth even batting an eyelash. I don't care if a gas station is more expensive by a penny or two. I got to the ones I like. Clean, lots of services, nice store with a good selection. I'll gain $30 in happiness by going to a nicer gas station than one with cheaper gas.

(But don't tell the gas stations this)
