36th Annual Banished Words List

Re: 36th Annual Banished Words List

I have to disagree with the Google entry. "Let me Google that for you" just makes sense.

Re: 36th Annual Banished Words List

Lake Superior State University has released their annual Banished Words List. They almost need to call it the banished word and phrase list though since there are more and more phrases showing up. Some good ones on there this year including "viral", "epic" and others.

My pet peeve isn't so much a specific word or phrase, rather the use of single body parts as shorthand.

Sportscasters are the worst, i.e. "he's out with a knee" "he's out with a toe"

Grrrr...

Re: 36th Annual Banished Words List

The word "action" as anything other than a noun.

"We'll action that."

"This is an actionable item."

When your work meetings sound like the boss from Fight Club, lemme know.

Narrator: Do you want me to deprioritize my current reports until you advise me of a status upgrade?
Richard Chesler: Yes. Make these your primary action items.

Yep. My place of work has gone from blue-collar/semi-white-collar to full blown corporate-talk BS. Well, when the higher-ups talk to us anyway. It wasn't like that not even 5 years ago.

Re: 36th Annual Banished Words List

Using vers instead of versus

Never heard that, but using "vice" versus "versus" is abhorrent. May as well just say "Why, yes, I am a d-bag." It's very common among gummint apparatchiks trying to sound intelligent with their Strayer MBAs. c.f. using "utilize" for "use."

My boss does it. Makes me crazy. Seems to be a growing trend locally

Are you in the DC area? Somebody I work with says it's an infection from military-speak*, like using pointless acronyms for things that can be expressed in one word (TDY for assignment, PTO for absent, PTI for disposal, COB for closing, etc...)

* The military gets a lifetime achievement award, however, for "blue falcon," one of the great contributions to the mother tongue.

Don't know what you're talking about, the specific meanings of those acronyms make perfect sense to me!

One thing that should really banished is speaking as if one was texting. Consider some of the shortcuts that people use, like LOL, WT*, ur (as opposed to your), etc.
