3/17/12 - Oswego vs St Norbert - St Patty's Day battle of the Green for NC!

Jones and Belanger were more than "only two seniors". Ryd, Jonette and Soley were all a huge part of this year's success but do not confuse them with Kyle Jones and Marc Belanger and the impact they had to get SNC over the top for their first Nat'l Championship.

Indeed, but if you're going to use quotation marks, maybe you actually want to put what I said within them. I was merely stating how graduating a low number of seniors doesnt necessarily mean similar success. There is no replacing the old 35 or 14. Not for those who saw them play anyway.

Thought the rule was you can only have 5 team personnel behind the bench including trainers and equipment managers.

You get 26, but I'm fairly certain any trainers or doctors don't count toward that - which in this case was two people.

Exactly....not to pick on Oswego but the last time they had a Sr heavy team and everyone was putting them in the title game pre season (rightfully so) they didnt make it out of the SUNYAC......sometimes expectations are just soooo high and pressure is so great. Having said that, next years Sr class is just...WOW!

This years Elmira team is another example of how a senior laden team doesn't automatically mean you are going to have success.

When looking at the 08-09 Laker team you have to consider they had Chris Hyk in goal for much of the season and when he was replaced by Tim Potter they were much better until he "cramped up" in the big games. They also lacked leadership on the ice for some reason something that next years team shouldn't have to deal with. With that said you never know how well a team will play together from year to year and even semester to semester. Oswego was a much better team after the Christmas break than they were before it and the same goes for St. Norbert.

Re: Elbo's take

The SNC squad on the ice this weekend was one of the most complete team I've ever seen skate at D3. They play team defense to perfection, and when they would occasionally break down, the goalie would bail them out. Very opportunistic on offense and convert from defense to offense in an instant. Don't know how Coughlin gets that much out of his players, but if he could sell it, many would buy it. I found myself spontaneously cheering their efforts alone.

I completely understand why the WIAC schools are taking their puck, and starting their own league. SNC had 6 ... count 'em ... six coaches / trainers / whatever behind the bench. The school simply wants success badly enough to support the program very well, and the results speak for the efforts.

Oswego played a great game as well, but simply made more mistakes than did SNC, and didn't capitalize when they had the chances.

In the long run, I'm unsure if perennially dominant teams (ala SNC, Norwich, Oswego & M'bury) help or hurt the future of D3, but this I do know, it was indeed a pleasure watching great teams play in person. Certainly heightens expectations for what is actually feasible at the D3 level.

PS - was a pleasure meeting Pete ... hope you had a safe trip home.
PSS - I love the big sheet ... really opens up the game.
It was also a pleasure to talk with you between periods at Saturday's game.
We arrived back to De Pere around midnight last night with my two travel partners: USVenture Jim and Big John, after another great experience in LP>

Re: Elbo's take

The last two years we played a "clunker" game in the semi's. This year we burned off our "clunker" in the SUNYAC championship game against Platty, so I was hoping it wouldn't turn up again in the Four. It didn't- we played a great game against Amherst in the semi's, and just plain got beat by a better team in the finals. I would almost say that Norwich threw in the semi clunker this year, but- seeing what the Green Knights did to both of us- that would only be taking away from SNC's exceptional play. Thanks to the team and the coaching staff for their efforts all year. Congratulations to St. Norberts, truly the current "team to be reckoned with", the team that peaked when it counted and traveled east and knocked off the poll leaders. SNC played two outstanding games, no excuses.

Disappointing, again...., but I really can't complain about another outstanding season. There are 69 other Div III teams that didn't have as good a year, it's tough when expectations run so high. I've said it before and I'll say it again- "Next year....".
