2nd Term Part X - A link to a fore gone conclusion

Re: 2nd Term Part X - A link to a fore gone conclusion

I suppose. I'm old, but I'm not that old, and "Dixie" has always seemed like a celebration of slave-holding buffoons to me.

Then again, "Deutschlandlied" and "The Internationale" are awesome songs -- probably the best two anthems ever written -- and it would be a shame if Hitler and Stalin ruined them forever, so I guess we give Decatur Dan a pass, too.

Hey Kep - this is for you. :) I swear that's Paul Robeson on the 1st cut.

Re: 2nd Term Part X - A link to a fore gone conclusion

Probably not the best thread for this post.

I used to think the B1G kinda messed up by not taking U Missouri. Big state, good athletics, etc. But this isn't just a 'protesters gunna protest' issue. I've seen some of the incidents..and it looks like racism has in fact been part of campus for decades and still exists today. Pretty bad for being part of the Midwest.

Oh please. Don't think this couldn't happen anywhere else in the big ten. Look at Penn State. They shielded a pedophile.

Minnesota's AD aggressively sexually harassed a colleague.

Wisconsin photoshopped a black kid onto one of their publications.

Those are just the ones I could remember.

Missouri below I-70 is definitely the South, not the Midwest. Don't forget, it was a slave state.

Same goes for Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Once you go below I-70, it's basically just one big extension of West Virginia and Kentucky. Accents, banjos, and all.

That said, dx is right.

Interesting. That dividing line is the old National Highway, built between 1810 and 1840. You may be onto something.

Those incidents are bad...but isolated events. PSU does not have significant numbers of pedophiles around campus. MN does not have significant numbers of sexual harassment going on at campus.

Big difference is apparently there is some systemic racism across the MO campus. No thanks.

While I'm sure this is accurate, we're talking about MO.

But I just don't see this stuff happening at any university I've attended

Me neither. One of the best things about the transition from high school to college was most of the really virulent racists got left behind. There were still a few, but they quickly got the message that what might have been OK back on the football fields at Podunk HS was not going to fly at a university, and they had to skulk off to the few frats that would have them. In contrast, it sounds like some of this stuff at Mizzu was socialized and part of shared public behavior. That's what's so bad. There will always be a few cementheads, but when the environment is friendly enough towards them that they crawl out of the sewers you know it's bad.

Harvard comments upon Yale and then Harvard comments upon Harvard.

That article triggered so many things for me I had to retreat to my safe space for the remainder of the day. Tomorrow: I'll call for the crucifixion of the article's writer which is the only fair punishment, because after all, I disagree with what he's saying.

This episode of Colbert was so awkward. It was painful and hilarious.

Maher was EFFING PIZZED!

Oh my god.

Re: 2nd Term Part X - A link to a fore gone conclusion

Remember when the GOP was predicting $10 gas if we had the temerity to re-elect Obama?

I think Maher was intimidated by Colbert. It's not just that Colbert is so much smarter -- he's also so much funnier.

I haven't seen Harvard put that kind of hurt on Cornell since the 2006 ECAC final.

edit: Apparently Colbert went to Northwestern. I am super confused; I always thought he went to Harvard.

I paid $1.79 this morning. I haven't seen it this low since the brief crash during the recession. A friend and I drove down to Minneapolis in the fall of '08 to watch Tech play the Goofs, and I remember we were paying prices we hadn't seen since we were kids.

Fake Colbert went to Dartmouth. The alumni magazine did a whole story on him. He apparently had a fling with Laura Ingraham while they were in school together.

Eighteen years ago I remember buying gas for $0.989/gallon, down from a relative peak of somewhere around $1.20/gallon. As a college student, I was in heaven. Add eighteen years of inflation to that $0.989 and you're not all that far off from where we are today. Oil prices were in the gutter at the time, a good opportunity to pick up oil industry stocks of the cheap. In fact, one of my roommates that very next year sunk a bunch of money into RIG, ended up with a really nice ROI around five years later.

I would ahve been interested to see the interview if religion had never been brought up. It's a hot-button issue for both of them, though for one, it's a far more public battle.

There are supposedly 6 more minutes on the website. I haven't watched them.

I agree that once Maher gets on religion nothing else is going to get done that day. I understand why he's on his crusade and at an intellectual level I agree with him about 80% of the time, but this was the wrong moment for him to air out that fastball yet again. We all know where you stand, Bill, but do you have anything else to offer?
