Whatever you say, Mr. Carter.

So when another country has a system of government like Apartheid, we should just ignore it and be thankful we aren't a black person living in South Africa. After all, there's nothing we can do to change it.

THEY have to want to change. If De Klerk was not amenable, then Apartheid would have taken longer to go the way of the dodo. Look @ it this way, despite 50+ years of US condemnation, trade barriers, etc., Cuba is still communist.

When you impost restrictions on a country, which segment of the population will suffer first and the most? It's not the transgressors, of that you can be assured. In general, I'm not in favor of economic sanctions against a nation unless it serves a national security purpose. Let trade relations with the country continue, then let our people decide if they want to do business with those countries. At most, I would require that all products imported bear a tag stating the national origin of products, ones that are only permitted to be removed by the end consumers, much like a pillow tag. Let the market tell that nation what our people think of their behavior, and they can then change if they think it's in their best interest.

Even if a hypothetical President Romney had sent a couple of gay representatives with the delegation, I suspect those who vote a straight Democratic ticket would be declaring it a token political gesture, rather than a ballsy act of defiance on Obama's part. Just like hardcore Republicans who complain that Obama hasn't gotten out of Afghanistan yet, when it was their man Bush that started not just that war, but also a second and even sloppier one in Iraq, and left Obama the mess.

Amazing how the righties always sweep that one under the rug.

Were the various Middle East and Northern Africa revolutions a result of US actions in the region? If so, the democracy the US installed in the region was Iraq. Does that then mean that Iraq should then be considered a good war? Was the US blood and treasure worth it? Are these democracies we've seen come about in this region pro- or anti-American?

So 1.5 trillion and death and destruction is worth it but sending gays to russia isn't?

Thanks Lindsey. Apparently Syria and Iran have been missed opportunities.

Not this one.
You mean like how the middle east is just yearning for the democracy we decided to spread?

US Foreign policy since the middle 70's has been focused on human rights. Good idea. But if the government you hate does not want to change, how are you going to change it outside of a coup d'etat?

Democracy only works in some places. Most people would be happy with a full belly and something to do during the day. That's cynical, but unfortunately it seems to be true.

I didn't say that at all. I'm not a supporter of the Iraq war, not since the WMDs were proved false. I'm asking because I know you've spoken out against Bush's invasion of Iraq, and yet now infer that the US invasion of Iraq is what led to these glorious democratic governments.

Thanks, Hyper Partisan Overreaction Guy.

Like Libya and Syria?

Are you seriously comparing the idiotic and unprecedented invasion of Iraq with our involvement in Syria and Libya, or are you suggesting a causal relationshiop between our invasion of Iraq and the uprisings?

Spreading democracy?

He's been in meltdown mode for the last week or so. I guess it's a sort of reverse holiday spirit thing.

Where did I infer that the "US invasion of Iraq led to these glorious democratic governments"? If I have then I made an awful mistake cause I never meant to infer such a thing and I certainly do not think such a thing. My position is an always has been that getting Osama is the ONLY thing that was worth doing. Now that he's dead we should bail. Iraq was a complete waste of time. And quite frankly so was Libya and Syria.

Interesting. A California venture capitalist is claiming that California is too diverse, politically, geographically and economically (which he also thinks is too large for a state) to be governed as a single body. He wants the state split into six states. This would also bring us two shy of that magical 57 count.

We'll stay at 50 states once Texas et al finally secede.
