Re: 2nd Term, Part VI: Burnin' down the House

Dems go nuclear and end filibuster for non-SCOTUS presidential appointments!

Good for them. I will now officially change Useless Harry Reid's nickname to Hardball Harry Reid. About time he learns his job (he's only had it since Jan of 2007).

Short term gain, long term pain. The threat of tyranny of the majority is why the Forefathers set up the government the way it is.

I could quote the previous positions of the President, Vice-President and Majority Leader that were 180 degrees opposite from their current position, when they were the minority party and the GOP majority thought about doing the same thing. Hypocrisy is wonderful, when it fits your agenda.

Now, when the GOP is in the majority, I expect your silence when the same tactics are used to squelch the voice of the Democratic minority.

Sorry, but 60 votes in the Senate for everything is stupid. Won't hear me whining. Even if the minority party in the Senate is squelched a little bit there are still checks and balances in the system.

Joey, baby, anybody who doesn't think the GOP would have done this anyway the first chance they got is a total idiot. I don't consider you to be a total idiot, so I'm sure you know as well as I do the filibuster was a goner about 3 days after Itch became Majority Leader. There's no way they'd pass up a chance to put another Scalia-type in a lifetime judgeship no matter what court we're talking about.

But beyond that plain truth, look at how this plays out. Lets say the GOP has a stellar year in 2014, and manages to win EVERY contested Senate seat. Mind you this would be fairly unprecedented as even in wave years usually one party hangs on to a couple of seats. But, its Jan 2015, and Itch is in charge with a 52-48 majority. This means.....zilch. If we are to give the GOP every seat that favors them in 2014, we must do the same for Dems in 2016, unless you're one of these "heads Republicans win, tails Dems lose" kind of people. ;) So, in a Presidential year, Kirk, Toomey, Johnson and Ayotte are screwed, Rubio and Portman better watch their back, and several Republicans (McCain, Grassley) might give up the ghost. Result? No matter who wins the Presidency, Dems back in charge of Senate.

So really, the earliest this could hurt the Dems is Jan of 2019, only provided we elect a Republican President in 2016. If we don't (and recent history suggests we won't ;)) Then we're talking 2021.

So I'm not worried about it. If in 8 years the GOP exacts some sort of revenge, so be it. Gives Dems more of an excuse to turn out in off year elections the way I see it.

Re: 2nd Term, Part VI: Burnin' down the House

I thought Obama said the US would be out of Afghanistan by 2014, another lie?
Yeah, I'm not happy about that one either. But, you had to know when Iraq started that this was going to be the deal. "You break it, you own it." and we broke it.

Meanwhile in the Senate.

Republicans are predictably unhappy about the success of the “nuclear option,” and there’s no shortage of quotes available about “power grabs.” But perhaps my favorite reaction came from Sen. David Vitter (R-La.).

“This isn’t just a shame for the Senate; it’s scary and dictatorial for our country.”

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/scary-and-dictatorial

David Vitter thinks that a majority vote of the US Senate is a dictatorship. I knew our education system was ****ed up but I didn't realize it was this bad.

LOL.

The filibuster didn't start getting abused until the last 10 years or so. Anyone who has paid attention would know that. Personally if I were Harry Reid I wouldn't have done it. I would have waited until the Republicans next had the Senate with a slim majority and I would have filibustered the hell out of every single piece of legislation that came through. Want to name a library? No, sorry we can't do that.

I like it. Typical whiny Republicans. They thought Dems would roll over and play dead and when they didn't all they can do is cry on the Senate floor. I'm also amused to see known prostitute solicitor Senator David "Diapers" Vitter talking about shaming the Senate. Didn't he do that when he was paying hookers for sex with his Congressional salary?

Filibustering a nominee of their own party (Hagel) who served with most of them is all you need to know. Stop bawling knuckledraggers. You asked for it, and the Dems delivered. :D

I wonder how much video we can compile of Mitch McConnell crying to the media cameras about wanting an up or down vote??

Where to the rest of us libtards send our cards and money thanking you guys for keeping the riff-raff at bay on this thread?

This. The way Republicans are blubbering, you'd think 60 votes for judicial appointees was required by the Constitution (it's not). Oh, but the filibuster, surely that's codified by the Constitution? Nope, wrong again. The filibuster is *not* part of the checks and balances in the system - it is simply an operating convention of the Senate, a tradition, a gentlemen's agreement. Well, the GOP stopped acting like gentlemen, so they have only themselves to blame.

Idiots.

Those two words that everybody freaks out about around here, but are once again applicable: "slippery slope"

No one freaks out over those words, because like you, we know the people saying them are a joke.

Rep. Pres. 51 GOP Senate, GOP House. Bye Bye PPACA and there will be nothing the Dems can do to stop it.

Or Dem Pres. 51 Dem Senate, Dem House. 70% tax rate on incomes over $250,000.

Yes, I know Prince Harry said only for cabinet and lower level federal courts, but do you honestly think he's going to stop there?
