2nd Term Part IX - How Lame is my Duck

Re: 2nd Term Part IX - How Lame is my Duck

You're preaching to the choir here on most of this. You can position a single point on a Laffer curve, which is exactly what setting a tax rate is. Perhaps there are multiple Laffer curves, each adjusted based upon bands of wealth.

Yes, the latter is how I see it. I'm not even sure the different inflection points are based on wealth bands. Likely they are more about the source of revenue (i.e., we are currently FAR more to the left of the inflection on cap gains than we are on earned income).

Re: 2nd Term Part IX - How Lame is my Duck

I was more referring to your GOP advocation comments, because the last few times the debt ceiling issue occurred, it seemed to be the Dems wanting to go on a spending spree and the GOP tightening the purse strings.

As to that, I was specifically referring to the GOP's position on the debt ceiling. In terms of overall spending, the GOP's position is to increase spending that benefits the wealthy while decreasing spending that benefits the middle class and the poor. There's nothing new about that -- it's been their company line since the 1920s. There's also nothing new in what happens when we follow those priorities: 1929 and 2007.

Tax policy is always used to create policies of the path of least resistance. That's why stock market prices have been artificially high since 2003. Not only because of inflation, but also because of the "tax sheltering". That's why, after the sell-off of 2008 (which I would attribute to a scare that democrats would take over and make the stock market not a good place to invest), market prices did not start to escalate again until after 2010, when lower rates for long-term capital gains and qualified dividends were "made permanent". If you were to conduct a survey and ask people what factor they use to judge how the American economy is doing, I guarantee that most of them would say the value of the Dow 30. Welcome to a fun game of musical chairs.

FWIW, the dot com boom of the 90's was real growth due to the expansion of a fairly new and helpful industry, which was a true bubble that did burst in 2000, resulting in the tightening of purse strings.

For someone who pretends to be a free thinker, you certainly swallowed the GOP messaging on the debt ceiling hook, line, and sinker.

Because in 2013, that was the case. I never said it was now. If anything, I'm calling out the GOP for being hypocritical.

Flaggy was going okay for awhile until his girlfriend dumped him. Now forced celibacy is taking its toll, like it does with all conservatives... ;)

Rush Limbaugh promised to move to Costa Rica if the ACA became law but he has never followed through on that promise. :(

Do you think that would stop him from broadcasting in the US? As much as people might not like him, the only thing that would come of him leaving would be his cash moves offshore along with his show's in-studio producers. It would be a net loss for the USA economy.

I disagree with just about everything the guy says, and he's a sellout, but he's good at what he does, and I enjoy listening to him ply his trade now and then. I'm sure it's getting old for him, but he must still get a kick out of stirring up liberals with his theatrics.

Kinda like all the Dems that were leaving the country if Bush was elected.

The guy writing or editing that piece needs to settle down with the font changes. Anybody going to the site knows it's an opinion site, likely by people who agree with the site's owner(s), so adding the emphasis in so many places is nothing more than a distraction. Unless s/he thinks the readers of the site have too low of a reading comprehension ability and therefore spoon-feeds readers the outrage. Really sad.

A certain portion of the population is mentally ill. It's kinda neat that they have a newsletter.

...if you consider mentally ill to mean only paying attention to catch phrases. After all, why do you think Twitter is such a thing? Most people seem to only have an attention span of 140 characters.

I use the only web browser my company permits for its computer installs (unless you're a web developer and need to see how our company's site appears in the different browsers).
