But we kept their germ warfare people around.

We looked past Werner von Braun and the Nazi rocket scientists' involvement in war crimes too.

As Tom Lehrer said, "'Once the rockets go up, who cares where they come down? That's not my department', says Warner von Braun."

"And I'm learning Chinese..."

This didn't make me laugh.

Wall Street got something to cheer about Thursday night—something other than the billions pillaged from our economy that cheer it every day—when the House voted through a provision weakening regulation on big banks as part of the bill that will fund the government until September. As Sen. Elizabeth Warren explained, the provision was written by lobbyists for Citigroup. That provision means big money for a few big banks. It would let derivatives traders on Wall Street gamble with taxpayer money—and, when it all blows up, require the government to bail them out.

Figure it out yet, kiddies?

Then you say, we make our own world
Not everyone takes what they are given
There was something that I can't remember
Did you say, "I've had enough"?

There was something that I can't remember
We have the chance to include ourselves out

Re: 2nd Term Part IX - How Lame is my Duck

When did we start letting banks do other non banking stuff? I think it was in the 70's while I was still in college.

From Wikipedia:

In the 1960s the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency issued aggressive interpretations of Glass-Steagall to permit national banks to engage in certain securities activities. Although most of these interpretations were overturned by court decisions, by the late 1970s bank regulators began issuing Glass-Steagall interpretations that were upheld by courts and that permitted banks and their affiliates to engage in an increasing variety and amount of securities activities. Starting in the 1960s banks and non-banks developed financial products that blurred the distinction between banking and securities products, as they increasingly competed with each other.

Separately, starting in the 1980s Congress debated bills to repeal Glass-Steagall’s affiliation provisions (Sections 20 and 32). In 1999 the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act repealed those provisions.

Sooo....where are all these "small government" conservatives I keep hearing about?

Silly. Government's only bad when it helps poor or sick people. When it gives your life savings to rich people for them to gamble with, that's just common sense.

Or gay people. Or women. Pretty much anyone who isn't "me" (or eventually "me" if I just work hard enough!)

I wish the partisanship would die down enough for voters to realize that the whole Occupy Wall Street/income inequality thing ought to be a commonsense place to join forces for basic personal freedom. Who (besides those legislators being paid off) likes the idea of another giant national stimulus bailout cash for clunkers waste-fest?

If they would take a moment to look at their original agendae, OWS and the Teabaggers would see they have almost entirely the same goals. Of course, for that reason, the Teabaggers' movement had to be astroturfed into an anti-government/anti-poor people movement.

That was the one moment I thought each movement could make a difference. It also lasted about 20 seconds, and then they reverted to type: Occupy became the Paris Commune and The Tea Party became the Know Nothings.

The original Teabagger agenda lasted all of five minutes. I don't even think you can call it original anymore. Put it this way it's like how the Republicans still call themselves the Party of Lincoln. Well, no they ain't. And the Teabaggers aren't small government conservatives either.

It lasted a bit longer than that. There was a TP rally at the VERY beginning in NoVa that was all about TARP and the banksters. Then I'm Just Asking The Question got a hold of it and six weeks later the next one was all about Mexicans and Communist Muslin Obama.
