2nd Term Part IX - How Lame is my Duck

There is no requirement that the President appear in person to deliver the SOTU. However it's free air time and a bully pulpit. Who IS going to pass that up?

Email, a letter to the Speaker, or a handwritten note all meet the requirements.

I think Roosevelt skipped giving the speech one year during the WWII, but I might be mistaken. It would require a small amount of research, and I just don't care enough about the speech to do that.

Comrades, we must heed Obama's call to cast away divisive politics...but after we've reminded people again that Romney put dog on car. #SOTU

Ok, I'll admit it. I don't get it.

Is that supposed to be mocking Fox News by portraying what it would be if it were Obama's puppet instead of the GOP's?
Is it a conservative's attempt at humor by playing up the Marxist usurper dictator meme?
Both?

Whatever it is, it just isn't funny. Very few of those tweets even got a chuckle. It's just...bizarre.

This is a Fox News parody site. Picture Fox in the Kremlin back when the Commies were bad guys, except on certain college campuses.

No. Just all the bad stuff. Any economic improvement, for example, is in no way tied to Bush. Just whatever bad happens.

Yeah, because who can forget all that great stuff Dubya did...

Now that's meta.

Speaking of Mr. 47%, for people who brave the Mordor-like lands of Freep and Redstate, what's the general sense on him? Kos and TPM want him the way I wanted Valerie Bertinelli in 1975.

They think he's a RINO...but you knew that.

I wasn't sure whether the general election agitprop changed minds.

Jeb any better? He seems to want to bomb lots of people (good) and wave a Bible around (good) but then again he doesn't appear to hate brown people (bad) or gays (bad).

Not much different than HRC, except for the equipment.

I want limited federal government, I don't think Jeb does.

You seem to want limited big business, too. How to do that without big government?

You can do some of that by not providing protections to those big businesses. Everybody likes to rag on the banks, so I'll go with that. If you remove their federal insurance guarantees, they will have to take more conservative approaches in how they operate, which will help avoid financial meltdowns. It's much easier to gamble with someone else's money, especially when that other person's money is insured by the Federal gov't.

Not necessarily. I want ethically and morally responsible businesses. That can be a Mom and Pop convenience store or it could be a multinational corporation. Size does not matter. How you behave does. That behavior extends from the boardroom down to the lowest level employee.

A judge (justice?) once said that he could not define pornography but he would know it when he saw it. Imagine if all the regulations said was "Don't lie, cheat, or steal." Instead of defining to the nth degree what actions constituted wrongdoing, we left it up to the system (courts, etc) to determine by common sense if some business did lie, cheat or steal.

One more thing -- corporations limit the liability of the decision makers. If the President or CEO, or some other high level mucky muck makes decisions that ruin a company, what's their punishment? A golden parachute? Meanwhile the corporate workforce is now on the unemployment line. What if corporations went the way of touch icing and all we had were businesses where the mucky mucks had to invest in the business before becoming a mucky muck and they would share in the profits and losses just the same as Mom and Pop do at the convenience store? Would that improve business performance? If they want to give millions to their local legislator, it's THEIR money that they're giving, not the "corporations".

The lawyers and unethical corporate players will love that scheme. The ones who would suffer the most would be the little guys who can't afford to go to court to stand toe-to-toe with the bad actors who have the deep pockets.
