2026 Elections: To the Midterms and Beyond!

Saw a funny post on Instagram this morning about Kansas and how them hosting some World Cup games and partying with Algerians changed their worldview. I know it was posted as a fun thing but I would like to think it had something to do with it.

Glad El-Sayed won. Happy Susan Collin’s won’t be concerned anymore. What do you guys think was the biggest and/or most surprising victory?
MS currently in contention is the most surprising.

NYT: Elon Musk, who is always online and constantly interacting with people on X, the social-media platform he owns, has been conspicuously silent tonight on the website. He hasn’t sent a message in about eight hours.

Guess that's what happens when you blow $500 million and get nothing for it.
Just imagine how much GOOD that money could have done. Talk about bad priorities.

Collins losing to a french speaking county boy is a pretty big upset. When I was kid there would have been no chance Troy would win a state wide election.

In theory, that money goes to print shops, people on the ground telling others to vote, and local TV channels. Even on national broadcast systems, there are a lot of people working. Not all is lost- all of that are real people who spend real money on real stuff. And getting money that would have never be spent back into the economy spinning around is a good thing.

But, yea, it could have been directed better. But at least it's back in circulation. Other than what the candidates kept.

That is true. At least some workers got the money.

Amy Klobuchar also received the State Senate and House. And she's smart, and not an overreacher. A lot of good is going to happen in Minnesota over the next 4 years.

Maybe not the biggest, and will probably fly under the radar, and maybe not the most surprising, but the most impactful will be all the seats that Dems still won in all those districts that the Repubs gerrymandered to be for them.

Most surprising result to me: all that outside spending from the billionaires, in some instance > 200:1, did not save those candidates. The voters spoke, loudly, above the din of the ads. Advertising is far less effective during a real economic meltdown when people cannot be distracted by hate campaigns.

Refreshing. It was an entirely legal and democratic coup; exactly what the Founders wanted.

I hope it helps reset our politics. It is very healthy that the biggest Democratic overperformance came in the heart of Republican territory: rural, white, Christian, blue collar. Straight white conservative males are not the enemy, they are a voting bloc which will, under these circumstances, behave as rational actors and reject the status quo. They are the people most betrayed by the Republicans, economically. State and local Democratic parties in the South have their best positioning since the 1950s to begin to build power bases that will end generational one party Republican rule down there.

Likewise the improvement of the DSA will help breath new life into democratic strongholds and prevent the type of entrenched do-nothing, donor-captured tenures we have seen in the last few decades, particularly among party leaders. Democratic politics will become more interesting and real issues will be debated. Left policies won't be outside the Overton Window. But they can't just be a braying of "defund the police!" They will have to be shaped smartly and have focused scope.

The whole experience was substantive. This was not run as WOMEN! or PEOPLE OF COLOR! or any other au current favorite group. The Dems didn't run as us vs them, they ran as we're all in it together, and it resonated. The Republicans ran as us vs them; they are evil!!1!, and they were soundly rejected.

So. Learn.
