2026 Coaching Changes

With the inevitable PWHL expansion it’s going to be crazy time in Women’s college coaching.
Since the league is controlled by a private equity firm, and they control salaries, not sure expansion draws top college level coaches.

Coaching Salary Overview

Head Coaches$100,000 - $150,000
Assistant Coaches$60,000 - $90,000
Specialty Coaches$50,000 - $80,000
Maybe to be GM's as those pay more than coaches. It is interesting/telling that in general staff positions are paying higher than most players. Probably only league that this is true. Mark Johnson is making north of $500K as the highest paid college coach.

This isn't my opinion but those I know involved with USA Hockey have commented to me they don't believe the PWHL is sustainable long term financially.

What the league has succeeded in doing where others before have not is drawing fans. Even if this one struggles or even folds, others will be encouraged to try again. Most of this year's increase may be the Olympics, but for the foreseeable future, that figures to add a boost every four years in Canada and/or the US.

From what I was told was the WNBA stays afloat because it's subsidized by the NBA. The WPHL is not subsidized by the NHL so it's financial stability and needs are not guaranteed.

Understood. But a few years ago, the "pro" teams were drawing crowds in the hundreds, so no economic model was feasible. It may still fail, just like plenty of men's leagues in various sports have sunk, but the interest is ascending.

It's a lot more complicated than that. What might look like a subsidy to those on the outside is considered a marketing expense by the NBA. They believe that growing the fanbase of the NBA itself requires demonstrating that they care about women's basketball as well as men's. If they don't do that, they believe that women are a lot less likely to follow professional basketball at the NBA level.

The Walter group has maybe deeper pockets than the NBA. They spent like $10B to buy the Lakers. It looks like they are intending to have 2-4 new teams for next season. Most likely that will mean two in the U.S. and two in Canada. At some point the teams are going to get sold off to individual investment groups. That might be when you'd see some of them fail.
