2026-27 Penn State Nittany Lions

Kind of scratching my head over why Jeff Kampersal went to the transfer portal for forwards, and grabbed Alanna Devlin from BC over Julia Schalin from Mercyhurst. They both have two years left, and Schalin was way ahead on the stats chart.

Here is my take Kampersal and his staff have tried to go after every single Mercyhurst transfer and every other notable name in the portal since he came to Penn State. I also think the Mercyhurst girls don't want to go to Penn State out of loyalty to Mercyhurst. That would explain the one player from Mercyhurst whom ended up at UNH of all places.

Devlin is an easy guess, the program is playing the long game with NAHA, keeping that program happy. Meanwhile, Butze is the last player from the BK Selects at PSU which emphasizes PSU working NAHA and Shattuck.

You have to dance with who wants to dance with you.

Yes, I am sure the faithful and the coaches had visions of sugar plums with the two scorers from Mercyhurst in the portal.

Janecke and Roberts are in the mix for the prestigious Ms. Penn State. Congrats to the ladies for even being considered at such a big school.

Mercyhurst players.......The PSU experience is probably not for everyone. Huge school that is far away from anywhere and has nothing close by. I also think that a departing player has no allegiance to their former school. When you are leaving, it's all about you and nothing else.

I hadn't thought about this, but I wonder who will captain Penn State next season now that Tessa Janecke is done. The only senior next season is incoming transfer Ashley Kokavec from Vermont, and I don't think a senior transfer gets to wear the "C". Penn State does have two returning 2026 Olympians in Nicole Hall and Matilde Fantin, but does Olympic experience mean automatic team captain? I guess in the absence of a natural leader like Janecke, trying to guess a team captain is extra hard without knowing who is a motivator, who is vocal in the locker room, who does what captains do, etc.

I don't have a guess...how about you?

Roberts was awarded Ms. Penn State. Apparently she also trademarked Klutch Katelyn.

As far as new players, don't count out the incoming frosh from the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite to not have an immediate impact.

Lobdell has paved the way. I noticed some other familiar names: Bedier, Cariocchi who are former PSU players and Tatum White a five year Syracuse player. Another article mentioned Rachel Weiss and it must have flown under the radar, but Providence made her the Captain for her last year.

Interesting…. Savannah MUIR has decommitted from SUNY court land D3 and looks to be the third goalie at Penn State! Surprised they did not go through the portal? Especially after hernick left… replaced a practice goalie with another practice goalie? PS obviously has high hopes for stickney.

Penn State still has Maddy Campbell, too, but Morgan Stickney is coming in with Team USA IIHF experience and a great record in those tournaments, so she will be battling Campbell for the starter job. I didn't know Lauren Hernick finally found a team, and kind of surprised she went to D3.

Hernick is 5”3 and didn’t play any games… no way was she getting a d1 offer. Very few goalies went out of the portal d1 and unless you play games there are just so many goalies out there. Look what happened to Taya Currie a few years back (she was the girl goalie that got drafted into the OHL and went to providence, entered the portal and she is at Macewen university in Alberta).

Maddy Campbell didn’t play a ton, and I don’t believe she played against any tough teams. I was surprised they didn’t get a senior goalie from the portal to give them some experience. I am aware stickney and her u18 experience so my guess those two will rotate a bit until they see who is the starter and both will most likely get a bunch of games.
