2024 PWHL Offseason

PWHL Compensation has clearly been an issue from day one and has worsened this coming season for the new draftees as the current PWHL bargaining agreement does not allow even the best new players a salary equal to that of average players signed last year much less last year's best players. It will apparently remain this way next year as well until the present agreement expires at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Given this I have wondered why the PWHL, it's fans or parties in interest in each of the PWHL cities has not created an "NIL" like arrangement whereby top players suffering under the current agreement can be "equalized" or better yet, fairly compensated until the agreement ends or can be changed to allow uncapped free agency or some fairer plan. I was hoping to get Ian Kennedy of The Hockey News to write an article suggesting something like this to get people thinking and maybe push the issue out there. Unfortunately, I cannot determine how best to contact him. If anyone knows how to reach him please suggest an article on this subject as it's what is causing many of the top players to be delaying their signings or considering signing in Europe. The money being offered this year and next is simply not close to being reflective of the worth of these athletes...

Oldtimer, I'm not sure how to contact Ian Kennedy, but he does have an X account (iankennedyck) and some other social media. I don't tweet/use X anymore.

The PWHL teams say via email to tune in to the 8-o'clock hour of Good Morning America tomorrow (Monday) morning. It sounds like that's when the names and logos will be revealed.

Sportsnet and The Hockey News have been reporting on the announcement. From Sportsnet:
"The six names are:
Montreal Victoire
Ottawa Charge
Toronto Sceptres
Boston Fleet
Minnesota Frost
New York Sirens"

Nice! They did respond to fan input, scrapping the earlier-reported names from last year (especially glad they got rid of the Torch name for Toronto, which was an insult in French). Looking forward to seeing the logos too.

Logos are now also visible at that Sportsnet link, including "wordmarks."

Montreal Victoire - Awesome.
Ottawa Charge - Eh.
Toronto Sceptres - Weird unless there is some sort of historical thing I am not aware of in regards to this and Toronto.
Boston Fleet - Solid.
Minnesota Frost - Solid.
New York Sirens - makes me feel very uncomfortable. What does a siren mean? Something bad has happened (police/fire) or is going to happen (tornado warning). I also thought of 911 right away with the connection to NY, very somber and depressing. I'm not sure what kind of emotion they are trying to evoke here. I think NY should have been the Victory.

From the internet, therefore it must be true:

"The word "siren" has multiple definitions, including a mythological creature and a woman who is considered attractive and dangerous:
  • Woman
A siren can also refer to a woman who is considered very attractive and dangerous, or a woman who beguiles men. Synonyms of siren include seducer and temptress.
  • Warning sound
A siren can also refer to a piece of equipment that produces a loud, high-pitched warning sound, such as a police car siren.
  • Mythological creature
In Greek mythology, a siren was a half-bird, half-woman sea nymph who lured sailors to their deaths with her enchanting singing. In The Odyssey, Odysseus had his crew plug their ears and tie him to the mast so he could hear the siren song without being destroyed by it. In art, sirens were first depicted as birds with women's heads, and later as women with bird legs or wings.
In the Middle Ages, sirens became associated with lust and temptation, an association that continues into modern imagination."

What do you make of all that now in relation to the name of a hockey team?!!?!

Its funny because the New York Sound was the best of those blah initial nanes alongside the Ottawa Alert which had history behind it. New York Siren is up there with the Boston Wicked in terms of awful names.

I still feel really bitter about them discarding the history of the Whitecaps name to satiate their ego...

Montreal -- Maybe it's me, but I don't get it, nor do I get why people like it. But I'm willing to be educated on this one.
Ottawa -- I'm with you. This is as bad as any of the original nicknames. I have no idea why they chose this one. And definitely the worst logo.
Toronto -- I'm with you on this one. But I still kind of like it. It is certainly different.
Boston -- I'm okay with it.
Minnesota -- Definitely good. Best logo out of the six.
New York -- As a New Yorker, I love it. And I have no problem with any of the connotations you bring up. Best of the six.

Overall, I'm still underwhelmed. They are better than the original selections, which is probably why some people are liking them -- expectations were set so low. But I think they could have done a lot better.

WAY too much having to think on that. If the New Yorkers like it, it's their city, I defer to them.

For Montreal, l love the French spelling.

That's not how it's supposed to work. They should have made the coach the GM then.

There are plenty of instances in pro sports where the head coach has control of personnel decisions, and the GM is subordinate to them. Bill Belichik was in control of the Patriots. Gregg Popovich with the Spurs. That's just off the top of my head.

The New York Sirens have announced that they'll play at home at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ for 2024-25. I'm somewhat lamenting the announcement as it's about as long a drive or train ride for me from CT as to Lowell/Boston for Boston's home games. Maybe I'll go to a few games in both places this season!

New York got a good crowd in their 1st New Jersey game last season, though not so much in their 2nd.

Too big. Need a 5-8,000 seat barn until the brand matures.

I think the only barn in NJ in that range is in Trenton.
