2024-2025 Season - Providence College

Side note- one lesser-talked about result of the rule change is that some already committed players who were in Junior A have begun joining the CHL. I already know of 2 Providence 2027 commits making the jump: 08 F Thomas Vandenberg signed with the Ottawa 67's, 08 D Zachary Roussy signed with the Gatineau Olympiques. Something to keep an eye on for the future recruiting classes.
Several other young recruits played in Q/OHL this past season. Ryan White jumped BCHL to Ottawa, Andrew Robinson-Windsor OHL, Mason Roy- Owen Sound (OHL), American Will Bent-Halifax(QMJHL). Rumors since rule change are Everett Baldwin will pick Q over Omaha(USHL). Blake Zielinski was drafted by Ottawa

I sure hope Baldwin will go QMJHL. Omaha is such a disaster that the entire conference had to deal with Yegorov halfway through the year.

A lot of teams are going to be scrambling to fill some of the holes in their lineups with some of the younger kids making the jump to college. While the CHL media world is all doom and gloom, one good side effect for these kids is a lot more opportunities to prove themselves in a bigger role, helped by the resources CHL teams can provide.

Feels like the USHL is the one league with the most to lose here. Yes, CHL players coming to play for a US college team is happening, and that's a good point about players waiting until being drafted (or not) by NHL teams. If you're 18, drafted and not gonna jump to the NHL, playing against many older players feels like it's the smart route for CHL players to continue developing, instead of thinking they're NHL ready, then bumped to the AHL. A lot of AHL-age players on NCAA rosters, would make more sense to climb the proverbial ladder to develop, instead of being set up to fail. As for the USHL, I hope with them losing players this gives other kids a chance to develop that would've had those roster spots lost if the CHL-route players hadn't left.

Ritter Coombs will be spending a season with the Erie Otters, so push back his arrival at least one year. His hometown is 45 minutes from Erie and his dad played 4 seasons in the OHL, so it's a little bit of a perfect storm opportunity for him. If Providence was wanting some of the arrivals to push back their freshman year, Coombs might not have taken much convincing.
felt like they decided to hold him for Sept ‘26 first, then went after the CHL/Usport players. Think they’d like to see him play bit more disciplined hockey as had 170 penalty minutes regular and playoffs this past year

Bigger surprise was seeing Kolin Sisson going to Chicago Steel camp. Him not coming has Friars at 25 players on roster.

The Sisson and Coombs moves are smart to give them playing time they may not have gotten with PC this coming season. I don't think another year before campus hurts either guy. PC might lose Malinoski, Gamache or Adams after the new season, so it opens spots.

Just a personal update on things: no news on a kidney donor, getting set up to start dialysis November/December. I expect my in-person participation to be a bit reduced, unless I can manage treatment days off on game days! If that is rejected, second half tickets may be available. I'll update later in the fall but happy to get to see the guys for a little while this year at least.

Sorry to see that your kidney donor need is still in limbo PK. Hope that is resolved soon.

I think the 25-26 season could be especially exciting for PC fans with the group of high end new players and strong core of returning players. Wondering if the current count of 25 roster players means there is hope for one more key addition. Not much time left for that though.

In the meantime PK, all the best to you for good news health wise. Perhaps you can take charge regarding a new season thread, would like to keep hearing from you.

I'm so out of it I thought THIS was the new season thread. On a closing note then, rumors are that Roger McQueen is Friartown bound. It can't hurt - the team, or his success, to play against older players with NCAA.

Roger McQueen is a big get, literally and figuratively. 6’5 and a prolific scorer. His past few seasons have been rocky because of injury issues. He discusses it in a podcast before the draft (i think it was during the combine) but apparently a back injury came up during an international comp in 23-24, was misdiagnosed as a bulging disc. He returned and aggravated it again, and it was misdiagnosed a second time, so when he returned again he still didn’t feel right. Finally this season he got to a doctor who specializes in spinal cord injuries and they correctly diagnosed the injury as a fracture. He’s reportedly feeling healthy now, but so was 2024 4th overall pick Cayden Lindstrom who missed the entire regular season, which is why he went 10th instead of much higher. Lindstrom is also going to college this year, and it should benefit both to have the chance to build out their frame with less games and more time in the gym. Both are super tall, lanky guys, injury history, big offensive upside.

I hope you guys can give him 95. Anaheim literally whisked him away in a helicopter to bring him to Disneyland during the draft for a photo op with Lightning McQueen. can we get a ka-CHOW in the thread???

Also PK, sending good thoughts your way and hope you can find a donor soon!
