2023 Patty Kaz Prospects?

I thought since we're getting close to the home stretch of the season if anyone has any thoughts on who the front runners should be for this seasons Patty Kaz award?

Excellent start - I would also include:

Olivia Mobley - QU
Sarah Fillier - PU
Abigail Levy - BC

All three have had very good seasons - I would put my money on Serdachny now though, she has been truly amazing to watch.

Academic and civic achievement are also factors in the selection but I don't know how much of a factor. Those achievements are harder to research for fans than pulling up a players stats.

As much as I don't want to give Muzzy any more bullets for the chamber, just give it to Jaques. She should have won it last year. A year late is better than not at all, just ask ARD.

Jaques would be my choice but I'm not unbiased but it's only because I'm not too familiar this seasons other potential candidates.

In the ECAC:

Mobley
Hartje
Serdachny
David
Dukaric

The best players on the best teams should certainly be considered, especially in the grind that is the ECAC. Some of these players don't necessarily have the supporting cast that some of the WCHA players and teams have. I know Fillier was amazing in international competition, but this award should be based on this year's college hockey season, and she has not outperformed these players. I don't watch the other leagues as closely so I stuck to the ECAC.

To me, it seems a little off when there are more players from Northeastern than there are from the entire ECAC. I doubt anyone other than HEA coaches would claim that it's a better league than the ECAC, but here we are.

The 2023 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award show will be broadcast live from the AMSOIL Arena ticket lobby on Saturday, March 18, in Duluth, Minn., as part of Saturday at the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four. Fans are encouraged to attend with doors opening at 11 a.m. CT and the live 30-minute television show beginning promptly at 11:30 a.m. CT. The three finalists will be on hand, in addition to Frozen Four team participants, as the 26th winner of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award will be revealed. NHL Network’s Siera Santos will host the show and Serena Veazey, daughter of the late Patty Kazmaier, is expected to be in attendance as well. The event is free of charge and light refreshments will be available.
I guess I missed it; when did we go from having an awards banquet to having a "ticket lobby announcement?" Let me guess; the pandemic was involved.

I don't want to sell any girls short but it's been debated on forum before Northeastern's conference is weak so if you have one or two decent teams in it it will be inevitable that some will have outstanding stats.

Leaving Hartje off this is a crime.

Couldn't agree with you more, Rightnut. I certainly hope voters weren't looking at total points instead of points per game as so many people often do. Ivies aren't allowed to play the same number of teams as the rest of the NCAA so total points is never a fair measure for Ivy players. Seems like year after year, there is a bias against the ECAC. I can only assume that for whatever reason, the voters are voting with the wrong priorities and motives.

Many on the list ARE deserving, but as you say "leaving Hartje off of this is a crime."

There may be some years where the ECAC has not been sufficiently represented in the 10 Finalists, or the 3 Finalists. In terms of winners (going by the league a program is in today), the ECAC has had 10, WCHA has had 8, Hockey East has 6, and the CHA 1. The problem with the 10 for the ECAC is that 6 of those went to one school.

Heise is hands down the best player I saw in person all year and it's not even close to whoever is 2nd. I need thinner to rinse my mouth now.

I waited to read this thread til now and want to chime in on Hartje.

I watched a couple Yale games this year and then randomly tuned into a a few minutes here and there. I knew / know little about them but it was the Seitz and Hartje show in every game I watched. You didn’t have to be told they were the best on the team, it was just glaringly evident, and Hartje’s points per game suggest she’s one of the best in the country. Hoping to watch Yale a bit on Saturday.

The Buckeyes got 2 on the top ten list. Hockey careers are funny. The Buckeyes won the Natty without Maltais last year, but I don’t think that program would have ever climbed the mountain without her leadership in the preceding years. This year, Maltais is not in the top ten for Patty Kaz (and I understand that) but if a Buckeye wins it, again I don’t think it would have happened without Maltais dishing the puck and winning faceoffs all year long.

I imagine coaches (they are some of the voters i think) show reasonable amounts of bias towards their own league or players when it comes down to 2 otherwise equal players. If the ecac is the league with the most parity amongst its teams, as has been argued all year, it seems possible that the votes get split to an extent that doesn’t happen in other conferences. I’m not surprised to see the top ten come out this way.
