2023-24 Penn State Nittany Lions

After one in Madison, it's 0-0, with shots on goal 8-7 for Penn State. No penalties in the period. This one looks pretty even, but I like Penn State's aggression.

The camera view is from far away. The announcers are okay.. PSU had two opportunities: one off a Brooks forecheck and one off a nice pass from Janecke on a delayed rush.

The St Lawrence coach is looking for something specific with the Hustler line. PSU needs to give her a little extra attention.

After two, it's still scoreless in Madison. Shots on goal are 27-22 for St. Lawrence, and Penn State took the only penalty. Katie DeSa is making some incredible saves in net, and she's had to with St.Lawrence really turning it up in that period.

PSU needs to stay out of the box for sure. Almost on Machado to Christian. Other than that PSU was outplayed that period.

Penn State and St. Lawrence are headed to OT at 0-0.

Third Period was definitely Penn State's. Ref's had to goto the monitor to see if Retrum scored and they ruled no. That shot was right off the cross bar. Kampersal is smartly playing a deeper bench this game.

Desa was tremendous! There is nothing to criticize, the game just did not go PSU's way.

I'll probably get flack for saying this, but I think Katie DeSa is every bit as good a goalie as Josie Bothun was. Prior to January of this year, just over two months ago, she had a grand total of 127 minutes of playing time...that's it. She had five shutouts since then, going into tonight, and she absolutely kept Penn State in this game. I'm not taking anything away from Josie Bothun, but DeSa has really proven herself.

I was very impressed with your team. They broke out as a group with accurate passes very consistently, created offense and played very good in the d zone. And yes your goalie was outstanding. It was probably the least boring one nothing overtime game I've ever seen, from the first intermission forward. First period was apparently was kind of nervous sketchy but I didn't get a chance to see it.

Yes any Penn State fan who watched Desa the past couple months has to be encouraged.

Comment from Gough about Janecke and the future made it sound like Janecke is not going anywhere which a person hopes is the case (she’s good for the cHA even if a pain to play against).

kind of felt like a throw back game - SLU vs the old Princeton coach, and UMD doing stuff in the tourney as well.

Yes, the whole Desa experience seems to be a replay of Chantal Burke coming from deep off the bench to have a great year when Brenneman got hurt. And I think the coach was just as surprised then as he is now on how well Desa has played. And don't forget in each instance, Kampersal had them as the third goalie. I like to remind everyone that both Brenneman and Burke played games at the pro level. Josie Bothun has had a fantastic career. Annie Spring received player of the week in the CHA during this year. Goalie should be okay next year

To think with Bothun and Gough getting hurt halfway through the year coupled with the graduates and transfers last year, PSU was playing this year with house money and still was one crossbar away from making it to the next round.

Post-game press conference with Janecke, Gough & Kampersal: https://gopsusports.com/watch/?Archive=9203&type=Archive
Three reporters in attendance this time Todd Milewski, Nicole Haase, & a reporter from Tessa's hometown area in Illinois.

Penn State had a very successful season and is going to come back stronger next year!

Thanks for that link - it's tough to see Julie Gough so choked up, but she's been a class act since the day she got here, and she can be proud of where the program is after her five years here.

It was fun to watch Gough when she went on a goal scoring streak for sure. All the seniors and fifth years can be proud of the year. It's tough to advance. These teams have been right on the cusp

Former Penn State Players:
M Uihlien did not use her extra year of eligibility and did not resurface anywhere else.

Mikayla Lanto finished with 31 pts for LIU and was second on the team in scoring.

Rachel Weiss led Providence in scoring with 19 pts

Jess Cariocchi had 4 pts for Brown.

Zanon and Wallin had nice years at their respective schools.

Meanwhile, PSU has had great success with players transferring in to Penn State.

Courtney Correia, Eleri MacKay and Briana Brooks all had career years

On D Maggie Machharen was second team CHA, and Avery Mitchell and Alva Johnson were solid contributors.

In goal, Jenna Brenneman had a great first year and then had the injury bug.

The current coaching staff has done a great job with their incoming transfers.

We really do inhabit a small world. Look who made my 3 Stars List in a 1st Round NCAA Game in 2023:

#2 Star: 2 Penn State Forwards: Kiara Zanon; and Olivia Wallin
Kiara and Olivia generated the Nittany Lion scoring. Taking a cross-slot feed from her Co-Star, Kiara executed a patient and brilliant backhand tap-in.

Olivia converted on the Power Play. Re-directing a Courtney Correia shot, Wallin's tip had impressive elevation and pace. The puck slammed into the goalie's shoulder, and darted into the upper right hand corner of the net.

Both players enjoyed the 2023 OSU Regional so much, they came back for more in 2024. Kiara with Ohio State & Olivia with UMD.

Everyone knows they transferred, the others are lesser known. I don't think many people knew Weiss led Providence in scoring. I didn't even know that until last night.

Everyone knows they transferred, the others are lesser known. I don't think many people knew Weiss led Providence in scoring. Is it really any news that Zanon was third or fourth in scoring on her team and Wallin was fourth? I'll leave it to you to post their stats from the 9-0 shellacking of Duluth by OSU.

Clearly my post wasn't read as I intended. I attended both tournaments in person. All I was saying was that I admired both players, both years. Heck, OSU didn't even compete in 2 of the 3 relevant games.

I've deleted. Totally up to you if you want to delete yours.

I went out late last night to order a sub to bring home to eat, and went through downtown State College, and who did I see? Josie Bothun hobbling down the sidewalk on her crutches - well, she's actually pretty quick on those things. I was at a red light with the sidewalk right next to my car, so I almost rolled down my window and said something, but I didn't want to embarrass her. If her parents are reading this, she wasn't heading for any of the bars that the million other students were lining up at...honest.

It's not easy being on crutches that is for sure. She must have a great work ethic to stay on a campus that big after getting hurt.
