2022 UVM Offseason

Ouch - that one hurts. From Lisa's earlier post we knew he was in the transfer portal. As time was passing I was hopeful he would return. As fate would have it - UCONN at Gut to open season 10/1-2....

Looks like Andrew Lucas is going to UCONN. That's a TOUGH loss. Is Raimonds Vitolins coming back next year? Both of those guys being in the transfer portal surprised me.
Lucas is a tough loss on the ice but I'd heard rumors that he had some baggage. Nobody seems to have details, but I've heard it from multiple sources and it seems that there's smoke there: https://twitter.com/DanielVConnolly/status/1554640862352736256 "Administrative issue" could mean anything so I'd rather not speculate, but clearly something was up.

Haven't heard anything on Vitolins.

Looks like UVM will have four players/commits at this year's WJC - and a hearty congrats to incoming freshman Ralfs Bergmanis who was named Latvia's team captain. (Maatta (FIN), Muenzenberger (GER), and potentially Maxim Strbak (SVK) are the other 3 - I think Strbak is coming in '24? too lazy to check my notes rn)

With all of the other off the ice/field/court "baggage" that exists around UVM athletics that is concerning.

Going to be very interesting what this team looks like on Defense this year. Really excited for the WJC to get me through the dog days of summer.

Agreed on that one, it's so open ended. It could be some MBB level shit (in which case getting him off the team is the right call), or it could be something as simple as academics. We'll probably never know.

FWIW on defense, it looks like Stucker and Long are returning as super seniors. Leahy and Luca the other returners (Babichuck retired). Eric Gotz via transfer. Not 100% on the incomings (summer school ends this week so that'll probably be when the directory updates).

I'm trying to contain my hype because WJC *is* a small sample size tournament but man, Bergmanis has been flat *impressive* this whole tournament and this Latvia team is insanely likable.

Maatta with two goals for Finland too!

Awesome night for the Cats! Also really impressed by Maxim Strbak. He might be go in the first 3 rounds next spring. One of the youngest players in the tournament and he is playing a ton of minutes for Slovakia. I wonder if they'll bring him in 2023-24, with Bump, Strand and maybe Kinsman.

Maatta looked great in the quarterfinal. Love how they use him on the powerplay, just sit him in front and have him try to use his strength to beat the defender. Would love to see the Cats try that this year. Wish USA out I guess Finland is my team now!

Not to be a downer, but Munzenberger got absolutely undressed on that first Finland goal. Missed the chance to break up the pass and then got burned on the give and go.

While the rosters aren't OFFICIALLY out yet, a tweet from student equipment manager Alex Beauregard of the locker room seems to indicate 9 D this year. Long, Leahy, Luca, and Stucker return, joined by transfer Eric Gotz (MTU) and freshmen Ralfs Bergmanis, Lucas Jones, Xavier Henry, and Philip Tornqvist. 9-man blueline.

Really great to have Stucker and Long back. Curious to see what we get from Gotz

This is a massive year for Munzenberger. Time to show he's a big time player/pro prospect. He's definitely shown signs and improved but I think this team needs him to take a step forward.

Munzenberger is interesting because he had to make a huuuuuuuuge jump last season. German U20 league right to Hockey East...that is not an easy jump to take, no disrespect to the talent in the U20 German league but it's not exactly the USHL for example, and Luca didn't drown (even if he did make some inexperienced mistakes)

9th does seem about right to me. Given what they've done the last few years, there is really no way that they could've been picked higher. I am really going back and forth about what to expect from this team. At times really optimistic and at others I'm really concerned they're just not going to be able to score.

Trust the process!

When does the in season thread start? :-);)

Love the new jersey. Reminds me a bit of the Frozen Four ones, St. Louis and Co wore back in the day. 9th seems realistic, they seem pretty solid on the defensive side but just need goal scorers. We'll see what this season brings...

Roster is updated!

Newcomer numbers: Gotz #6, Good #14, Evans #21, Henry #23, Sinclair #26, Jones #28, Richards #29, Tornqvist #33, Autio #34, Bergmanis #39. Ryder Donovan is taking a personal break from hockey per Todd Milewski (super reliable Wisconsin writer, his old school).
